If, on the one hand, societies are facing crossroads from the point of view
of models of governance, economic and
financial models, there is also a clear inflection of the technological curve. Adding to the mix a rapid change in demographic curves, there is an entanglement
in which the search for meaning and
direction by scientists, economists and
politicians has proven inconclusive.
Historically, moments like the one described above were very important for
the arts, and viceversa. In many cases,
the sensibility of the artists succeeded
in a better conveyance of the overflow of
concepts, simplifying matters and making them more palatable to all.
For our part, we believe that the reality of
targeted and instantaneous communication many to many is the most remarkable factor at the moment and for this
reason we have sought, from the beginning, to include in the concept of the Prize
a relevant online platform. Therefore, it is
with great satisfaction that we see in this
edition data such as the number of followers of Prmio Investidor Profissional
de Arte (PIPA) on Facebook reaching
120,000, the number of unique visitors
of the Portuguese language version web-

mas tambm considerado um dos mais
importantes do pas. O que nos d uma
sensao de dever cumprido, em 2013.
Sempre devemos parabenizar a Investidor Profissional, nosso parceiro, mantenedor do PIPA atravs do Instituto IP,
tambm responsvel pela sua produo,
pelo seu exemplo a sociedade.

o que penso ser a principal qualidade destas entrevistas realizadas pelo PIPA com
os artistas indicados. Disse ele em artigo
no Globo: Voc v o documentrio que
Scorsese fez sobre Dylan e fica pasmo ao
ver como os americanos documentaram
cada entrevista dada pelo ento promissor
cantor folk. Podemos parar aqui e dizer
que Dylan e os Estados Unidos se merecem mutuamente. Nada na Histria do
Brasil fez com que pudssemos ter uma
atitude de altas expectativas a nosso prprio respeito que nos levasse a registrar o
que surge (O Globo, Segundo Caderno,
pag 2, 7/10/2012). Este conjunto de entrevistas e imagens produzido e disponibilizado no site - segundo relatos casuais que
nos chegam de curadores interessados em
arte brasileira j vem sendo uma fonte
de consulta e pesquisa. Cremos que com
o passar do tempo isso s tende a crescer,
pois o material concentrado d um recorte bastante amplo geogrfica e artisticamente - da cena contempornea brasileira.
O prmio online e a atuao no Facebook
so um desdobramento do processo tendo
em vista um pblico menos especializado,
que convocado pelos prprios artistas
a entrarem no site para angariar votos. A
partir da, este amigo do artista acaba visitando outras pginas e tendo muitas vezes
um primeiro contato com arte contempornea. O alargamento do pblico via redes
sociais no pode ser desprezado.
Em 2012 convidamos trs crticos (cada
um recebendo R$ 1500,00 pelo trabalho)
para escreverem sobre aquela edio. A
pauta era livre, poderia ser sobre a exposio, algum dos quatro artistas finalistas
ou sobre algo relacionado que achassem
pertinentes. Toda liberdade foi dada e
isto fica evidente ao lerem os textos.
O que de mais relevante aconteceu neste processo, do meu ponto de vista, foi

In its fourth edition, the Investidor Profissional Art Prize - PIPA Prize, keeps the
principles established since its inception,
but always seeking new improvements.
At the same time as it was idealised with
the partnership and support of l, the
Prize has always aimed to be national.
There has always been an interest in giving visibility to artists from outside the
Rio-So Paulo region. We seek to provide
a broader view showing that in our country of continental dimensions it is possible
to find good productions in all regions.
For the Nominating Committee, we have
always invited art experts from all regions of Brazil and abroad (in this case
seeking an outside view).
The four finalists of this year, more than
in previous years, reflect this distribution.
There is Berna Reale, from Par, representing the North Region. Camila Soato,
from Braslia, in the Midwest Region.
Laercio Redondo, who was born in a
small town in Paran, in the South, currently living both in Rio de Janeiro and
Stockholm, Sweden. Finally, Cadu, from
So Paulo but living in Rio de Janeiro,
who is the only of the four finalists who
was born in the Southeast Region.
They are artists from different generations, who work with various mediums
such as painting, photography, installation, and performance which indicates
that this show will be quite diversified.
Another change concerns the artistic residency, which is part of the main prize given to the winner of PIPA chosen among
the four finalists, by the Award Jury. We
believe that, besides the money prize and
the possibility of exhibiting at the l,
the opportunity to take part in an international artist residency programme is a
benefit that aims at boosting the artists
career through exchange of experiences
with artists from other countries, in a different art scene.
In 2013, relevant elements were implemented. Since the first edition we were
criticised for inviting gallerists as nominators. PIPA Board had always kept art
dealers among the nominators for considering market view important. The solution we found was that the gallerists who

In the course of his career, Caio Reisewitz has been developing the unique
poetics of a nomad, whose keen gaze
conveys a certain nostalgic atmosphere
to his photographs. While his careful
approach to image treatment reveals
the influence of the German schools,
Caio Reisewitz advocates the aesthetics
of Romanticism in his clean and precise
photographs that stands out for its technical and thematic refinement. Caio
Reisewitz focuses in several themes,
such as landscape, cityscape, day-today life and interiors, often produced
in grandiose formats that bring images,
their bulk, texture, and rich details,
near the spectator.

In his work Steegmann makes use of common objects and natural materials and
their associated narratives to explore the
relationships between nature and culture,
twist reality conventions and engage the
imagination of the spectator.

O campo de luta de Paulo o da subjetividade, ou seja, qualquer abordagem sobre o seu trabalho ganha corpo
a partir desta apreenso: ele est em
relao com o mundo expondo esforos
de constituio de si. Mas ele est nesta
relao como quem est em um campo
de guerra, ou melhor, em combate por
permanncia, mas no a permanncia
do sobrevivente, e sim a do sujeito que
luta por outras formas do viver, sobretudo, a forma do viver artista. Da sua
constituio ser posta em dvida por ele
mesmo, pois a pergunta o que sou em
Paulo foi substituda, de fato, pelo como
possvel o [artista]?
Assim o que Paulo coloca na fornalha
acesa da arte, to somente, ele mesmo,
e ele enquanto artista. Longe de ser um
exerccio narcisista ou encerrado na auto-referencia da arte, ele com isso expe
o corpo comum a todos ns, o corpo que
carregamos j h sculos, que o corpo
do sujeito da modernidade, corpo do
mal-estar, corpo cindido e multiplicado
nele mesmo, corpo de efeito elstico e de
carne esgarada, corpo inflado e tornado
campo de guerra. Corpo nada agradvel
de se ver, pois treme a nossa frente.

Around at emerged in the MArco Amador saga? The body-as-swing, the body
as-helice, the vertigionous body, the
falling body, the body-as-other, the
strangers body, the shadow-body, the
headless body. There is no end to the
mutation, and is not easy to accept this
body, much easier to conform, to develop ideologies, to turn it into language,
to communicate. But what goes unsaid
when action is taken is the war cry of the
bodies that overpower, resist and come
through cracks in the walls: the body
that goes down into the depths and, from
there, cries out and make us quake in
fear.
Things that tremble disconcert us, and
Paulo lets us see this through his own disconcertedness, because he himself falls
to the floor before us (OMA: a perder
de vista), shows himself as a monster
through a black hole (OMA: 15 minutos
no jardim de Alice Coelho) and throws
himself to te mercy of the cruel game
of blind-mans bluff, in wich he busts
open his own head (OMA: cursos). It
is through these Paulos that we come to
see the other, which is the artist as subject. And Paulo reminds us how strong
self. He plays so much with the immutable, literally, creating the charade that
is O mArco Amador.

Vnia Mignones work evinces a development very dear to the history of contemporary art: the autonomy of drawing no longer just scribblings, a rough
sketch as a plan for something else, or a
smaller work and the extent to much
drawing has invaded other areas, being
repositioned and incorporated into a
very particular state, with striking speed
and boldness. Her woks possess the velocity of a comic strip, a sign or billboard.
They are quick lines, smudged to just the
right degree, constantly evading a literal
reading. We do not necessarily understand her pictures and, moreover, the
text does not always fit the image. The
uneasiness they provoke quickly disassociates these works from what we could
call a pop and urban atmosphere. Her
figures are sometimes solitary: at other
moments, we behave as voyers invading a household environment uninvited,
though in still other cases. With this
same atmosphere, the characters do not
seem the least concerned about this intrusion. It is astonishing how with such
few lines and in such a relatively small
space the work captivates our attention.
Whether because of the characters eyes
or in the (vain) attempt to understand
that landscape. Her work pushes us into
a zone that is difficult to locate. I would

Virglio Neto was born in 1986 in Braslia but spent his childhood in the city
of Anpolis, Gois. He came back to
Braslia in 2004 to join the Graphic
Design couse at the University of Braslia - UnB. Since his first exhibition in
2008 he have been showing his artwork
in many cities around Brazil. In 2011
was select to be part of the project Rumos Ita Cultural. In 2012 he got the
first prize at the Prmio EDP nas Artes
of Tomie Ohtake Institute. Also in the
same year, he had his book of drawings,
Perhaps it is not a Small World, published by A Bolha Press.

The 2012 Award Jury composed by Gilberto Chateaubriand (Jury president) Luiz
Camillo Osorio (curator of the Museum of Modern Art of Rio de Janeiro), Moacir
dos Anjos (coordinator of Visual Arts of Fundao Joaquim Nabuco), Rowan Geddis
(Gasworks residency programme coordinator) and Waltercio Caldas (artist), selected
Marcius Galan as the winner.
The exhibition visitors elected Rodrigo Braga as the winner, with 987 votes on a total
of 2179.
In 2012, the only category open to all nominees was decided in two rounds for the
first time, moving forward to second round only the artists who have received at least
300 votes on the first round. The first round lasted 17 days, 86 artists participated
and there were a total of 11,000 votes. The second round lasted 15 days, 15 artists
participated and there were a total nearly 13,000 votes. Berna Reale was the winner
with 4,508 votes received only in the second round. Tinho was the runner up with
3,669 votes.
The four finalists donated artworks to the collection of the Museum of Modern Art of
Rio de Janeiro. Matheus Rocha Pitta donated Laje#8 (Ameaas) [Slab # 8 (Threats)]
Marcius Galan donated the museums document copy (the pink copy) of the work Obra
de Arte em Cinco Vias [Artwork in Five Copies], Thiago Rocha Pitta donated Planeta
Fssil [Fossil Planet] and Rodrigo Braga donated Bilito [Bilito].
The winners of each category and also the runner up of PIPA Online donated artworks
to Instituto Investidor Profissional. Marcius Galan, winner of PIPA, donated the
Institutes copy (blue copy) plus a pad of paper of the audiences copy (green copy
unlimited edition) of the work Obra de Arte em Cinco Vias [Artwork in Five
Copies]. As winner of PIPA Popular Vote exhibition, Rodrigo Braga donated Fato
[Fact]. As winner of PIPA Online, Berna Reale donated A mulher [The woman].
The runner up Tinho donated Prazeres [Pleasures].
CRITICAL INTERVENTIONS
Thee critics were invited to write texts related to this edition of the Prize. Marta Mestre did more and created a project: the Critical Lounge Area.

The bipolar criticism that was made between an inside and an outside, today
gives place to critic in a porous and unstable field whose most relevant data is the
publics new speech capacity.
We also no longer believe, like Adorno, that
salvation lies in defending high culture and
vanguard art against mass culture.
Critical Lounge Area intended to contribute to a museum critical thinking and
to defend political spaces, and political
forms that still exist in debate, in argumentation, in imagination, and in the silences as well, giving visibility (no winners
or losers) to the museums contradictions
and the ability to talk with people who
frequent it.

determinada sociedade, seja considerado digno de escuta. O resto e continuar sendo simulacro.
Por outro lado, o fato das artes aparecerem cada vez mais interligadas a todas

new situation is a more or less direct consequence of the one from the sixties.
Indeed, according to many critics, anthropologists, sociologists and philosophers,
art can no longer sustain its autonomy in
modernist way. Without completely denying to the perception of a territory more or
less distinguishable as artistic, it is possible, today, to speak of a post-independent
condition of art. To Nstor Garcia Canclini of La sociedad sin relato, its about
a trans-disciplinary, intermedial and
globalized turn, with sufficient power to
redefine the previous linguistic, sociologic
and anthropological turns. Mixing art
with any other forms of production (from
gastronomy to hard science), as the fact
that art no longer has a clearly defined
space for itself (the art field), bring new
questions around the possibilities of its
existence inside the current ways of capitalistic production. It becomes evident for
artists worldwide that art no longer can
produce by itself. Similar observations
are made in other fields regarding other
disciplines. But its post-independent and
intermedial condition isnt a guarantee of
free cooperation. All kinds of trade, all collective work, all cooperation in creation,
research and life management can be redirected due to business interests. If, in the
next few years, the market deepened its
influence in socialization and evaluation
of art, if, therefore, the vital kept being reduced to the vitals controlled imitation ,
art should deepen its thought and sensibility opposition power.
On the other hand, the fact that the arts
appear to be increasingly interconnected
to all other ways of production isnt a simple symptom of quantitative interconnection of flows in a globalized world, but the
effect of a new general need of existence/
subsistence. According to several current
scientists, to assure its subsistence in the
immediate future, mankind can not be
guided by the means of competition. Unlike, existence will depend substantially of
cooperation.
Regardless of the several definitions that
art can adopt in the next globalization
stage, it will still be a tear of its own its re-
