Cruise ship onboard casinos
Cruise ships operating onboard casinos require relevant state and territory regulatory or other approvals to possess electronic gaming machines in Australian waters.
Many of the world’s largest cruise ship operators that sail to and from Australian destinations have onboard casinos for those aged 18 years and older to experience. The casino offering typically includes traditional table games such as roulette, blackjack, poker, as well as electronic gaming machines (EGMs), electronic table games and other gaming activities (for example, cash-claws).
Onboard casinos and the 12 nautical mile limit
For most Australian and New Zealand ports, on-board casinos will generally open once the ship is 12 nautical miles from land. There is often a complex process, to ensure that casino operations do not occur in Australian territorial waters. Any activities that occur beyond this point are subject to the United Nations Convention on Law of the Sea and, sometimes foreign law, based on where the ship is registered.
