S is a high-level programming language which is used to analyze statistics.^[1] The paid software programs called S-PLUS are based on the S language. Other programming languages, including the free R language, are based on S.^[2]

History

The S language was developed in the 1970s at Bell Laboratories by John Chambers and other programmers including Trevor Hastie.^[3]
