"Three Dreams Denied" is the seventh episode of season 32 of The Simpsons and the six-hundred and ninety-first episode overall. It originally aired on November 22, 2020. The episode was written by Danielle Weisberg and directed by Steven Dean Moore. It guest stars Ben Platt as Blake and Paul Rudd as himself.

Synopsis[edit]

"Bart becomes a voiceover actor and Comic Book Guy is humiliated at Comic-Con. Meanwhile, Lisa is set up for a fall."


Plot[edit]

At his shop, Comic Book Guy is searching for a way to buy the tickets to the San Diego's Comicalooza, when Agnes comes with a cart full of Skinner's toys, including a high priced Radioactive Man toy, which he sells for $3.400 on MeBay. The next day Skinner comes to reclaim it back but it was too late.

Meanwhile at Springfield Elementary, Lisa meets a new kid, Blake, who also plays the saxophone. Dewey Largo announces that the session is going to decide if Lisa keeps or loses her role in the band. At the store, Bart meets a voice over artist, Phil Muhlstock, and admits he does them too, and stays at the shop for long.

Comic Book Guy boards a plane full of cosplayers to Comicalooza, writing question cards, and lands at San Diego. At the convention he meets Paul Rudd. After a while roaming the convention, he finds the perfect question to ask at the panel.

At school, Lisa slowly falls in love with Blake, but after their exchange at lunch with Milhouse's interference, he reveals that his blue eyes are just contact lens to hide his red evil-looking eyes. Comic Book Guy gets at the panel, but he lost his question card, and loses the chance to work at Marvel.

At school, Blake grabs first chair after tricking Lisa. Meanwhile, Bart is at Mike Pop's Recording Studio, after imitating Phil's winning try, Bart gets a part in Cookie Castle, too, but at home, he finds out he plays the role of a girl, and the bullies pick on him for it.

Comic Book Guy, Lisa and Bart all got their dreams busted, with Bart being bullied at school the next day too, even after Lisa's comforting words, while Comic Book Guy returns at his shop, where Ralph restores his confidence.

At the same time, Milhouse calls Bart to turn on the TV to his show, where he has become a queen, killing other people with her unicorn, raising his popularity to the roof. At the Springfield Mall, Lisa conquers the people with her jazz, winning a free pretzel that she kept till she become older. In the end, they all are happy and achieved something.

It was previously known as The Voice Actor's Apprentice. It was previously scheduled for 2021.[1]

In the interview to TV Insider showrunner Al Jean said: "Ben Platt plays a sneaky untalented kid who succeeds when he doesn't deserve to, so, not himself,". Blake, who casts a spell over Lisa. The fellow musician will have her crushing hard, but there's more to Blake than meets the eye.[2]

Reception[edit]

"Three Dreams Denied" was nominated for a 2021 Writers Guild of America award in Animation, but it lost to "Xerox of a Xerox" from BoJack Horseman.[3]
