Our Verdict

Who It’s Best For

Side sleepers, stomach sleepers, and back sleepers alike found this mattress comfortable, but it tested best with side and back sleepers weighing less than 230 pounds. Given its strong ability to isolate motion, the Helix Midnight is also good for couples.

Feel

The Midnight has a medium-firm feel and a good balance between comfort and support, thanks to the combination of memory foam and polyfoam layers and the coils in the support core. Memory foam on the surface conforms to your body to provide a hugging sensation.

What It’s Made Of

The Midnight is a hybrid mattress with comfort layers that are made of memory foam, polyfoam, and transitional polyfoam, while the support core contains both pocketed coils and polyfoam.

What We Don’t Like

Despite its versatility, the Helix Midnight might not give enough support to sleepers weighing more than 230 pounds. The foam layers may give off a strong “foamy” smell when you first unbox the bed.

We performed a meta-analysis on 6653 validated customer reviews of the Helix Midnight. This is what people who bought the mattress had to say:

  • Comfort and Firmness: Many reviews mention the comfort level of the mattress, indicating it is generally well-received for its balance between firmness and softness.
  • Heat Regulation: There are mixed comments regarding heat regulation, with some finding the mattress cool enough, while others still experience heat retention. We found the mattress to regulate temperature better than the average hybrid, but beds with foam comfort layers always run the risk of retaining body heat.
  • Pain Relief: A common theme is the relief from back, hip, or shoulder pain, suggesting the mattress is effective for those with chronic pain or side sleepers.
  • Durability Concerns: Some reviews express concerns about the mattress’s durability, noting issues like sagging or indentations over time.
  • Sleep Quality: Numerous reviewers state that their sleep quality has improved, mentioning deeper sleep and less discomfort during the night.
  • Edge Support: The edge support of the Helix received mixed reviews, but the overriding sentiment is that it’s firm enough to support your weight when sleeping near the edge. This backs up what we’ve found in our field and performance testing.

Full Details

Helix Sleep’s mattress lineup includes more than a dozen hybrid models specifically designed for certain types of sleepers. The Helix Midnight is a versatile model that feels comfortable for a wide array of sleepers, but our testing shows that it’s particularly well suited for side sleepers. Its versatility can be attributed to a balanced medium firm (6) feel that combines the contouring of memory foam with robust coil support.

How It Performs

Our testers awarded the Midnight above-average ratings for pressure relief compared to other hybrids. The foam layers provided even cushioning for areas of the body prone to pressure buildup, such as the shoulders and hips. The transitional foam also served as a buffer for the support core, so testers up to 230 pounds didn’t sink too deeply into the mattress.

Edge support was another strength of the Midnight during our tests. Reinforced coils around the bed’s perimeter allowed testers to use the entire surface of the mattress, so you shouldn’t feel confined to the middle during sleep or sex. Steady airflow through the coils also helps the mattress sleep cool.

Construction Breakdown

The mattress begins with a comfort layer of memory foam that conforms closely to your body, followed by a transitional polyfoam layer that provides additional contouring but also pushes back a bit more than the memory foam. Individually pocketed coils reinforced with high-density polyfoam make up the support core. The reinforced perimeter coils create pushback when you sleep near the edges of the mattress or get in and out of bed. A stretch-polyester cover encases the entire mattress.

The Midnight has a below-average price-point for a hybrid model and Helix Sleep offers free ground delivery throughout the contiguous U.S. You’ll receive a 100-night sleep trial that includes free return shipping. If you decide to keep the mattress, you’ll also receive a 10-year manufacturer’s warranty.

Our Verdict

Who It’s Best For

The WinkBed is a true crowd pleaser. With a firmness level to fit any body type and sleeping position, people struggling with back pain vouch for this bed’s ability to provide comfort, relief, and improved sleep quality.

Feel

The WinkBed embodies all the feelings of a hybrid: A responsive give and take when you sit and lay on it coupled with a plushness in the top layers to give you balanced support and comfort for your back, hips, and shoulders.

What It’s Made Of

Zoned pocketed coils with thicker springs around the edge of the bed to protect the perimeter from sinkage. Most models feature an adaptive polyfoam surface layer, followed by a layer of denser foam to support your body weight. The Plus models feature zoned latex, ensuring heavier bodies won’t sink in too deeply.

What We Don’t Like

Some sleepers with back pain have thought the bed was too firm for their body weight. It’s also a very thick mattress, which means it’s heavier and can be difficult both to move and to find sheets that won’t pop off during the night.

We’ve tested hundreds of beds, and the WinkBed stands out as a hybrid mattress that most sleepers should find comfortable. Four firmness levels — medium soft (4), medium firm (6), firm (7), and extra firm (8) — ensure back, side, and stomach sleepers from multiple weight groups are likely to find a WinkBed that fits their needs.

How It Performs

The WinkBed caters to different sleeper types based on the firmness level you pick. During our tests, we found that back sleepers under 130 pounds and most side sleepers preferred the medium soft bed. The medium firm option offered an even balance of cushioning and support, so this was the most universally comfortable model. Back and stomach sleepers weighing at least 130 pounds enjoyed the even sleep surface from the firm option, and the extra firm WinkBed Plus earned the highest marks from testers who weighed over 230 pounds.

All models performed well in our motion isolation tests, but couples seeking greater motion isolation may prefer the softer model. The cushioned surface greatly reduced motion transfer when two or more testers shared the bed. The WinkBed also performed well in our temperature regulation tests. Air circulates easily within the mattress’ coil core, and the Tencel cover offers additional cooling.

We found edge support to be another strength of the WinkBed. The coils are reinforced along the perimeter to provide pushback and reduce sinkage.

Construction Breakdown

The Euro-top is quilted with gel-infused polyfoam, which cushioned sharp pressure points during our lab tests. The cooling gel infusions are designed to absorb and dissipate excess body heat. Next is a layer of SupportCell polyfoam that kept our testers’ body weights evenly distributed across the mattress surface. The medium soft model has an extra transitional layer made from polyfoam for added plushness, and the Plus model features latex in lieu of foam for enhanced support. The zoned, pocketed coil support core helped maintain spinal alignment for our testers, and the Tencel fabric cover kept the surface cool and breathable.

The WinkBed ships for free to states within the contiguous U.S. and includes a 120-night sleep trial. If you aren’t satisfied with your initial firmness selection, you may exchange the mattress for a softer or firmer model at no extra cost, and the replacement comes with its own 60-night trial. All models are backed by lifetime warranties.

The DreamCloud mattress is best for side sleepers who weigh more than 230 pounds, but it’s also a good option for back sleepers.

Feel

Those who weigh more than 230 pounds will appreciate the deep contouring and lack of sinkage. Side sleepers will enjoy the combination of cushioning and support.

What It’s Made Of

The DreamCloud cover comes quilted with polyfoam for a plush feel and its comfort layers get progressively denser to help your body settle without sinking too much. Pocketed coils (hybrid model) and high-density base foam provide a sturdy support system to keep your back aligned through the night.

What We Don’t Like

Despite coming in either an all-foam or hybrid version, the base model only has one firmness option, which may not be quite firm enough for heavier sleepers.

Full Details

The DreamCloud Mattress is a luxury hybrid mattress that stood out to our testers for its impressive balance of support, pressure relief, and temperature neutrality. We found this mattress had a medium firm feel (6 out of 10), with a plush quilted surface and tall profile.

How It Performs

When our testers lied on the mattress, it conformed moderately to the body but didn’t produce that “sinking” feeling that we’ve observed in softer mattresses with foam layers. Performance-wise, the DreamCloud is a great all-around mattress, earning especially strong ratings for pressure relief and ease of movement. We recommend this mattress for most sleeper types except for side sleepers under 130 pounds.

Temperature control was another strong point during our tests. Air flows freely through the coil layer, while the cashmere blend cover keeps the surface cool. One of our at-home testers has slept on the DreamCloud for two years, and confirms thermoregulation is one of its defining strengths. “I used to sleep hot,” they say, “but the DreamCloud definitely helps.”

Construction Breakdown

The DreamCloud’s cover is made of a cashmere poly-blend fabric quilted with a polyfoam layer. Our test team found the surface very breathable and plush, and the gel-infused memory foam under the quilted cover offered excellent pressure relief. Beneath is a transition layer of polyfoam and a support core containing individually wrapped coils.

For a luxury mattress, the DreamCloud is fairly affordable, coming in at an average price-point for a standard hybrid bed. DreamCloud stands behind the mattress with excellent guarantees, which include a 1-year sleep trial and a lifetime limited warranty.

Side sleepers with back pain and people who experience painful buildup at night welcome the contouring features of the foam layers with the strong support of a coil system.

Feel

The Nolah Evolution feels plush when sinking in to it due to all the foam layers but still feels relatively easy to move around on the surface of the mattress due to its responsive support core.

  • Durability and Quality: Users often comment on the high quality and durability of the mattress, noting that it maintains its shape and comfort over time.

Full Details

A mattress that promotes even alignment can be highly beneficial for people who experience soreness in their lower back during the night. Our test lab found that the Nolah Evolution 15 serves these sleepers well thanks to a plush pillow-top surface and a robust support core containing zoned pocketed coils. The mattress is available in medium (5), medium firm (6), and firm (8) models, so most people will find a comfortable option regardless of how much they weigh or which sleep position they prefer.

How It Performs

Performance ratings for the Evolution 15 largely depend on the firmness level. The medium feel earned the most favorable ratings from side sleepers on our test team weighing up to 230 pounds and back sleepers under 130 pounds. We noticed that this model also excels at motion isolation and pressure relief. The medium firm and firm versions fared better with testers who sleep on their back or stomach and weigh 130 pounds or more. We found that these models also offered very strong edge support, good responsiveness for sex, and easy movement across the surface.

All Evolution 15 models earned stellar ratings from our testers for temperature control, though the two firmer options took a slight edge over the medium feel. The combination of a cooling cover, breathable open-cell foams, and a coil system that promotes steady airflow makes the Evolution 15 one of the most comfortable mattresses we’ve tested for hot sleepers.

Construction Breakdown

The Evolution 15 features 2 inches of adaptive foam quilted into the Euro-top, followed by a proprietary AirBreath border gusset designed to maximize airflow and reduce heat buildup. Next is a second comfort layer of AirFoamICE, an open-cell foam infused with graphite for added cooling. Two layers of denser foam provided transitional support that kept our testers on an even plane.

In the support core, thicker coils are used in the midsection to provide extra reinforcement and pushback in the area where most people carry a disproportionate amount of weight. Sturdier coils along the perimeter reduced sinkage when our testers got on and off the mattress. The foundational layer is composed of plant-based fiber. A cover made of breathable ArcticTex fabric encases the mattress, and each side is equipped with handles to aid you with lifting and moving.

The Evolution comes in seven sizes, including a split king. Nolah provides free ground delivery for all orders in the contiguous U.S. The company also offers a 120-night sleep trial, but customers can forgo the trial period and reduce their up-front cost by up to $150. The Evolution 15 is also backed by a lifetime warranty against structural defects.

Full Details

If you’re a combination sleeper who uses two or three positions over the course of a given night, finding a mattress that meets your needs can be quite challenging. The Brooklyn Bedding Signature Hybrid is a good starting point thanks to its high-quality construction, multiple firmness options, and a wallet-friendly sticker price.

How It Performs

The medium soft (4) Signature Hybrid earned stellar ratings from side sleepers weighing up to 230 pounds, and back sleepers under 130 pounds. This model contours closely to cradle your body, promote even alignment, and reduce pressure along the spine. Those seeking a firmer, more supportive mattress should consider the firm (7) design. Our side sleepers over 230 pounds and back and stomach sleepers weighing at least 130 pounds were particularly impressed with this model. The medium firm (6) design offers the most balance, and should be comfortable to anyone between 130 and 230 pounds across all three sleep positions.

The two firmer mattresses received high marks for edge support and ease of movement, whereas the medium soft model performed better in testing categories like motion isolation and pressure relief. All three excelled at temperature control. A breathable cover, gel-infused top layer, and steady airflow throughout the coil system all help the mattress stay cool. If you’re an exceptionally hot sleeper, you can upgrade your Signature Hybrid to include an additional foam layer encased in heat-dissipating phase change fabric.

Construction Breakdown

Specific designs for the Signature Hybrid vary by firmness, but all three contain comfort systems with two polyfoam layers. The topmost layer is infused with cooling gel intended to reduce heat buildup on the surface, while the second layer is fairly dense and acts as a buffer between your body and the support core. Pocketed coils and base foam stabilize the mattress well and create a noticeable bounce when you get into bed.

You can choose from 14 different sizes for the mattress. In addition to standard mattress dimensions, these include a split California king for couples with adjustable beds and several RV sizes. Brooklyn Bedding offers free ground shipping throughout the contiguous U.S. The company’s sleep trial runs for 120 nights, and those who keep the mattress also receive a 10-year warranty against workmanship defects.

Hot sleepers praise the Bear Elite’s cooling properties, while also speaking favorably of its balance between firmness and cushioning at their desired firmness level. The Luxury Firm model is the most versatile one when accommodating different sleep positions among people weighing between 130 and 230 pounds.

What It’s Made Of

The Bear Elite has one polyfoam and one memory foam layer that is infused with copper to keep it cool. The coils in the support core are thicker around the edges so you can sit and sleep around the edges of the bed without sinking in too much.

Sleepers who frequently switch between different sleeping positions often benefit from a mattress with a balance of cushioning and support. The Bear Elite Hybrid is a foam hybrid with three firmness options, so most members of our testing team found a model that felt comfortable regardless of their sleeping position. The bed also stands apart with a set of cooling features that our hot-sleeping testers enjoyed.

How It Performs

The foam layers earned the bed high marks in our pressure relief tests, making this an ideal bed if you experience painful pressure buildup at night. At the same time, the bed also offers plenty of support, thanks to the coil system. The medium firm (6) option was the most universally appealing model among our testers, earning high marks from back sleepers up to 230 pounds and side sleepers over 130 pounds. The medium (5) option was favored by side and back sleepers up to 130 pounds, while the firm (8) model performed well with back and stomach sleepers over 130 pounds.

Cooling was one of the Bear Elite Hybrid’s major strengths during our tests. The cover is composed of phase change material and Celliant fabric, intended to wick moisture and maintain temperature neutrality. The coils also allow air to circulate through the bed. Our heat guns detected minimal heat buildup on the surface. If you and your partner prioritize a responsive surface for sex, you may also enjoy the bounce from the coil system.

Construction Breakdown

With several firmness options available, the mattress appeals to sleepers with various body types and sleep preferences. Underneath the Euro-top cover is adaptive memory foam, which cushions the body and gently relieves pressure. This layer features a copper infusion designed to help regulate temperature. Next is a layer of polyfoam that further promotes contouring but also has a responsiveness to prevent excessive sinkage. Beneath is a pocketed coil support core, which reinforces the mattress and delivers sturdy but responsive support. The coils rest on a base layer of polyfoam for stability.

Seven sizes are available for the Elite Hybrid, including a split king for couples who share adjustable beds. If you and your partner have differing firmness preferences, you can order a split king with a different feel on each side. Bear offers a 120-night sleep trial with the Elite Hybrid, as well as a lifetime warranty. Shipping is free within the contiguous U.S.

Comfortable is subjective, but most couples find the Leesa Sapira provides great pressure relief in the back and hip areas and is supportive enough to maintain spinal alignment. Since it’s a medium firm hybrid that’s designed to sleep cool, it has just enough foam to provide ample cushioning for a wide range of sleeper types.

Our Verdict

Who It’s Best For

The Leesa Sapira Hybrid has strong motion isolation and edge support, so it’s a solid choice for those who are easily bothered by their partner’s movements or sometimes find themselves at the edge of the bed. It’s best suited for side and back sleepers weighing less than 230 pounds.

Feel

The Leesa has a bouncy feel which makes it easier to move around during the night. It’s super soft and plush and gives you the “hug” feeling of the memory foam without sinking in too much to feel stuck.

What It’s Made Of

While thickness varies depending on the firmness option, the top is made of cotton quilted with polyfoam padding, the comfort layer is in TitanFlex polyfoam followed by transitional polyfoam, and pocketed coils and base polyfoam make up the support core.

What We Don’t Like

Some customers report off-gassing after unboxing, while others have said that the firmness level did not match what they were expecting.

Full Details

Shopping for a new mattress with a partner can be challenging because their needs and preferences should influence your decision as much as your own. The Leesa Sapira Hybrid checks a lot of boxes for co-sleepers, including strong edge support, consistent cooling, and above-average motion isolation. Most of our testing team also enjoyed the balanced medium firm (6) feel, which combines adaptive foam comfort layers with a robust support core.

How It Performs

The Sapira Hybrid earned its highest marks from side sleepers weighing at least 130 pounds and back and stomach sleepers under 130 pounds. That said, most of our testing team awarded favorable ratings to the mattress. The deep comfort system provides ample cushioning to promote even alignment and minimize pressure buildup for side sleepers, while the sturdy coil base keeps most back and stomach sleepers on an even plane.

Temperature control was a testing highlight for the Sapira Hybrid. Thanks to a ventilated top layer and plenty of airflow throughout the coil system, the mattress should maintain a cool, comfortable temperature. Other performance categories where the mattress fared well include edge support and motion isolation.

Construction Breakdown

The Sapira Hybrid’s comfort system consists of three individual layers, beginning with 1.5 inches of adaptive polyfoam. This layer is aerated to promote air circulation and help the surface stay cool. Memory foam and transitional polyfoam provide additional cushioning. Pocketed coils and dense base foam make up the support system. Thicker coils line the perimeter to stabilize the edges when you get in and out of bed. A breathable knit cover encases the mattress.

Competitive pricing and free shipping to all 50 states make the Sapira Hybrid a solid pick for budget-conscious shoppers, and each order includes two Leesa pillows at no extra charge. Your sleep trial runs for 100 nights. If you decide to keep the mattress after the return period ends, your purchase is further backed by a 10-year manufacturer’s warranty.

Side sleepers praise the pressure relief provided by the Midnight Elite, but it also garnered favorable reviews among stomach and back sleepers weighing up to 230 pounds.

Feel

“Sleeping on a cloud” and “Just the right softness” are a few choice phrases used by customers to describe the experience of sleeping on the Helix Midnight Elite.

What It’s Made Of

As part of Helix’s most luxurious line, the Midnight Elite has five foam layers in its comfort system, plus two layers of zoned microcoils and a reinforced perimeter for stability and durability.

What We Don’t Like

Its pricing is above average for a hybrid model, and it’s 16 inches tall, so sheets are a watch-out.

We performed a meta-analysis on 110 validated customer reviews of the Helix Midnight Elite. This is what people who bought the mattress had to say:

  • Comfort and support: Many reviewers mention that the mattress provides good support and comfort, especially highlighting its benefits for side sleepers and those with back pain.
  • Temperature regulation: Several reviews discuss the cooling features of the mattress, though opinions vary on its effectiveness, with some finding it cool and others still experiencing heat. We found that it performed better than the average hybrid, but with thick foam laters, the bed is inevitably going to trap some body heat.
  • Pain relief: A significant number of users report relief from pain, particularly in the back, neck, and shoulders, after sleeping on the mattress.
  • Price and value: The cost of the mattress is often mentioned, while the vast majority of users liked the bed, some questioned whether it is worth the relatively lofty investment.
  • Durability concerns: A few reviewers express concerns about the long-term durability of the mattress, mentioning issues like sagging or the formation of indentations after short periods of use.

Full Details

Part of Helix’s most luxurious mattress line, the Midnight Elite contains a comfort system with six individual layers and a support core with sturdy, zoned pocketed coils. These features create a nice balance of cushioning and reinforcement. Many of our testers noted a gentle, cloud-like effect as their bodies settled into the mattress, but the underlying materials provided decent pushback to limit sinkage and keep them on an even plane.

How It Performs

All Helix hybrids are designed with specific sleeper types in mind. The Midnight Elite is geared toward side sleepers between 130 and 230 pounds, and all of our testers who meet this criteria awarded high marks to the mattress. The mattress also received favorable ratings from back sleepers weighing up to 230 pounds and stomach sleepers under 230 pounds. Anyone who appreciates deep cushioning and cradling from their sleep surface should find the mattress comfortable.

The foam and microcoil comfort layers absorb movement well, resulting in above-average motion isolation compared to other hybrids we’ve tested. We also found the Midnight Elite alleviates pain, pressure, and hot spots along the spine. At the same time, the surface is responsive enough to help you move across the surface without feeling stuck.

Construction Breakdown

The Midnight Elite’s comfort system intersperses memory foam and microcoils to make the surface feel plush, adaptive, and somewhat bouncy. Two polyfoam transitional layers form a buffer between you and the support core to keep your body on an even plane. All of these components are encased in a luxe Euro-top.

The pocketed coils are divided into three firmness zones for extra support beneath your midsection and a gentler feel elsewhere. Extra reinforcement along the perimeter provides stability and reduces compression when you sit or sleep along the edges. A cover made of cooling GlacioTex fabric helps ensure a comfortable sleep temperature. At 16 inches tall, the Midnight Elite is quite thick and requires a deep-pocket fitted sheet.

The sticker price is fairly high, even by luxury hybrid standards, but delivery is free to customers in the contiguous U.S. and each order is backed by a 100-night trial period. If you aren’t satisfied with the mattress, you’ll receive a full refund and Helix covers the return shipping costs. Those who keep their Midnight Elite receive a 15-year manufacturer’s warranty.

Our Verdict

Who It’s Best For

This model is best for those who weigh more than 230 pounds, sleep on their stomach or back, or just happen to prefer a firmer feel. If a softer mattress has caused you back pain in the past, the Firm Luxe is a solid option for spinal alignment.

Feel

True to its name, the Plank has a firm surface that will make you feel like you’re sleeping on it rather than in it. That’s not to say it’s not comfortable, however — the thick foams offer gentle support for high pressure areas.

What It’s Made Of

The Plank has two sides: a firm and an extra firm side. The firm side has layers of proprietary TitanFlex foam that is similar to latex and high-density polyfoam. The extra firm side lacks the TitanFlex foam and has a thinner layer of polyfoam. The two sides share the support core layer, which is made of pocketed coils.

What We Don’t Like

Firm mattresses are not everyone’s cup of tea. Side sleepers and those with severe pressure points should opt for something a little softer.

We performed a meta-analysis on 1748 validated customer reviews of the Plank Firm Luxe. This is what people who bought the mattress had to say:

  • Comfort and firmness: Many reviewers discuss the comfort level of the mattress, often highlighting its firm feel. While all of those bought the mattress for its firmness, a few people still found the bed too firm.
  • Cooling features: Several reviewers mention the cooling features of the mattress, specifically the Glaciotex Cooling Cover, which is appreciated for providing a cooler sleep experience.
  • Pain relief: A recurring theme is the relief from back and joint pain, with many users noting improvements in their sleep quality and reduction in pain.
  • Dual firmness options: The mattress’s ability to be flipped for different firmness levels (firm and extra firm) is frequently mentioned and appreciated by those who have different firmness preferences.
  • Edge support: A lot of reviewers mention the strong edge support of the Plank Firm Luxe.
  • Off-gassing: A few reviewers note the presence of off-gassing when the mattress is new, but it typically dissipates after a few days.
  • Customer service: Experiences with customer service are generally positive, with reviewers appreciating the responsive and helpful support team.

Full Details

Most mattresses made today fall between 4 and 6 on the 10-point scale, making it somewhat difficult to find a suitable bed if you want a firmer feel. The Plank Firm Luxe from Brooklyn Bedding is a flippable mattress with a distinct feel on each side. Our testers found that the firm (7) side contours to a minimal extent while providing sturdy overall support, while the extra firm (9) side barely conforms at all.

How It Performs

As a mattress designed to feel exceptionally firm, we found that the Plank Firm Luxe excelled in some areas where softer models usually fall short. Both sides felt very sturdy along the perimeter and did not sag excessively when our testers lied near the edges or got in and out of bed. Temperature control was another major strength during our testing. The coil layers promoted steady circulation to cool off the interior of the mattress, and the firm surfaces ensured that our testers did not sink too deeply and lose their surface airflow. Those who sleep excessively hot should consider purchasing the optional phase change cooling panel.

Our testing found back and stomach sleepers feel most comfortable on the Plank Firm Luxe. This is especially true of those who weigh more than 230 pounds, but testers who favor these positions and fall within the range of 130 and 230 pounds also gave the mattress generally favorable reviews.

Construction Breakdown

The firm side of the Plank Firm Luxe features adaptive foam quilted into the cover, followed by a comfort layer of TitanFlex polyfoam and a transitional layer of high-density polyfoam. Our testers noticed that this side combines the contouring of memory foam with the responsiveness of latex. The extra firm side has less foam quilted into the cover and does not include a TitanFlex layer, which our testers found distinctly firmer than the opposite surface. A shared support core of pocketed coils stabilizes both sides of the mattress.

You can choose to add a GlacioTex cover featuring panel of phase change material, which is sewn to the fabric on both sides. This cooling component is engineered to capture and release heat, which helps maintain a comfortable surface temperature. The panel increases the mattress’ price by $100 to $200, depending on which size you select.

Shipping is free of charge for all customers in the contiguous U.S. The Plank Firm Luxe is backed by a 120-night sleep trial and a 10-year warranty.

Our Verdict

Who It’s Best For

The Layla Hybrid mattress is best those who prioritize pressure relief. In fact, its flippable design offers a choice between firmness levels, catering to various sleeping preferences and body types. The soft side is a soild option for people under 130 pounds, while the firm side is comfortable for all sleepers from 130 pounds and up, provided they enjoy a bit firmer surface.

Feel

The soft side offers exceptional motion isolation and pressure relief, and both sides have temperature regulation, but the firmer side is stronger in the cooling department since it has less foam.

What It’s Made Of

The 13 inch Layla Hybrid has a flippable construction with five layers. The comfort layers on the soft side has 2.5 inches of copper-infused memory foam that facilitates cooling and 2 inches of polyfoam. The firm side has 1 inch of copper-infused memory foam and 1.5 inches of polyfoam. The shared support core contains pocketed coils.

What We Don’t Like

Some side sleepers report a lack of support from the softer side. And while a flippable design is definitely a perk of the Layla Hybrid, flipping it is not the easiest feat, as it’s on the heavier side.

Full Details

If you’re a combination sleeper, you may find your firmness preferences vary with each position change. The reversible Layla Hybrid features two sleep surfaces, one medium soft (4) and the other firm (7). Our testing shows the latter offers adequate support for most back and stomach sleepers, while the softer side contours deeply to promote even alignment for side sleepers.

How It Performs

After testing both sides of the Layla Hybrid, we found our side sleepers generally preferred the medium soft surface. This was especially true for those weighing up to 230 pounds. Thick foam layers ensure close conforming to improve alignment and reduce pressure points in the shoulders and hips, a common side effect from using the side position. Our tests also showed the firm side was more comfortable and supportive for back and stomach sleepers of at least 130 pounds, and side sleepers weighing more than 230 pounds.

Temperature control was a highlight of our tests. Using heat guns and thermal body sensors, we detected minimal heat retention on the softer side and next to none on the firmer side. Motion isolation was another strength of the Layla Hybrid. Our testers noticed very little motion transfer when lying next to each other on either side of the mattress.

Construction Breakdown

The Layla Hybrid’s medium soft side contains 2.5 inches of copper-infused memory foam, followed by 2 inches of transitional polyfoam. The latter is zoned to provide extra reinforcement for your midsection and gentler cradling elsewhere. The firm side also features these components, but the layers are thinner to minimize cushioning and make this surface feel more supportive. A shared pocketed coil support core is located between the foam layers. The coils are doubled up along the perimeter to reduce sinkage when you lie or sit along the edges.

The copper infusions are meant to reduce heat buildup on the surface, and a breathable polyester-viscose cover encases the entire mattress. You can unzip and machine wash the polyester, rayon, viscose, and poly-lycra blend cover whenever it needs to be cleaned. Comparatively, most mattresses made today feature non-removable covers that can only be spot cleaned.

The Layla Hybrid is competitively priced and shipping is free for all customers in the contiguous U.S. Your order includes a 120-night sleep trial, during which you can return the mattress for free if it doesn’t meet your needs. If you decide to keep the hybrid, Layla backs your purchase with a 10-year manufacturer’s warranty.

Our Verdict

Who It’s Best For

The Hybrid Comfort’s foam-over-coil design should appeal to most side and back sleepers weighing at least 130 pounds. Stomach sleepers in the same weight range should also get the cushioning they need without sinking too much.

Feel

The Hybrid Comfort is medium firm (6). You’ll notice some deep contouring on the surface when you get into bed, but transitional foam and coil layers push back against your weight as your body settles into the mattress.

What It’s Made Of

Layers of breathable open-cell polyfoam, memory foam, and dense transitional foam make up the comfort system. The pocketed coils are divided into seven zones with thicker springs resting beneath your torso and hips — this ensures adequate reinforcement where it’s needed most.

What We Don’t Like

Most testers on our team struggled to move across the Hybrid Comfort’s surface — the topmost foam layers aren’t very responsive. You’ll also notice strong off-gassing odor for up to 72 hours after the mattress is unboxed.

Full Details

The Emma Hybrid Comfort checks the important boxes for shoppers seeking a high-value mattress that effectively dissipates body heat. Three foam layers make up the comfort system, resulting in a plush feel and plenty of cradling, while the support core contains zoned coils that push back against your midsection and allow plenty of airflow. The sticker price falls well below average for a hybrid, and your order includes a sleep trial that spans an entire year.

How It Performed

Balanced medium firm (6) construction helped the Hybrid Comfort earn favorable ratings from the majority of our team’s product testers. Side sleepers weighing at least 130 pounds, back sleepers up to 230 pounds, and stomach sleepers under 130 pounds were particularly impressed with the mattress. The foam layers deliver close, even contouring to distribute your weight and minimize pressure buildup that occurs due to uneven alignment, while the coils keep your entire body cool and on an even plane without too much sinkage beneath the midsection.

Temperature control proved to be a key strength during our tests. The top foam layers have an open-cell composition, so they shouldn’t trap a lot of heat, and the coils promote plenty of airflow to help the mattress maintain a comfortable interior temperature. Above-average motion isolation also makes the Hybrid Comfort a solid option for couples who normally find coil mattresses bouncy and disruptive for sleep.

What It’s Made of

The comfort system consists of three layers, beginning with open-cell polyfoam that conforms closely to your body. Underlying memory foam and high-resiliency transitional foam layers provide additional cushioning while pushing back against your weight and keeping your body aloft. Pocketed coils and dense base foam ensure great overall stability. The coils are divided into seven zones to provide strong reinforcement for your heavier areas and gentler cradling elsewhere. The Hybrid Comfort’s cover is composed of knit polyester.

In addition to its reasonable sticker price, the Hybrid Comfort qualifies for free ground shipping anywhere in the contiguous U.S. If you decide to keep the mattress after the 365-night trial ends, Emma further backs your purchase with a 10-year warranty against workmanship defects.

Video: We Tested the Best Mattresses in a Box – Here Are Our Favorites

Watch our video below to learn more about our lab’s top picks for mattresses in a box.

Below you’ll find in-depth looks at each of our top picks, but keep scrolling to check out our guide to buying mattresses in a box. The guide offers all sorts of helpful information about the mattress delivery process, pros and cons about different mattress types, and answers to common questions about mattresses-in-a-box.

How We Test: Rigor, Data, and Sleeper Feedback

Our team understands the strong connection between choosing a mattress that’s right for you and getting enough sleep each night. Over the past eight years, our Seattle-based Test Lab has performed hands-on tests on more than 4,000 sleep products — and nearly 2,000 of them are mattresses.

As product experts, we stay up to date on the latest news in sleep science and product trends. We use this knowledge to fuel our data-backed recommendations. Many of our testers have worked directly with mattress manufacturers and visited actual mattress factories. On occasion, a sleep health expert might stop by to tweak a firmness rating.

When we test a mattress, we collect data across six major performance categories and combine these results with real-world feedback. We use tools and tech to monitor features like heat retention, motion isolation, and pressure mapping. In order to ensure our findings are inclusive of all sleepers, our team consists of people with varying body types and sleep positions.

Our goal at the Test Lab is to help take the guesswork out of your mattress-buying process. Guidelines for each part of our process are listed below.

Construction analysis: We begin testing each mattress by analyzing its design and making note firmness, height, individual layer composition, and sticker price. This allows us to evaluate qualities like support, durability, and value.

Product testing: Firsthand testing is crucial to our evaluation and ratings system. We use a wide range of tools and technology to test mattresses in six performance categories: motion isolation, pressure relief, temperature control, ease of movement, edge support, and odor potential.

Field testing: In addition to lab-based tests, we base our ratings on feedback from field testers who use the mattresses in their own homes. They spend several weeks collecting data — this gives us insights into how the mattress performs night after night for an extended period.

User testing: We curate feedback verified owners have provided in surveys, sleep stories, and product reviews. This helps us evaluate our initial findings and, if needed, tweak our ratings to reflect real-world experiences.

So How Did We Pick the Best Mattress in a Box?
To narrow down our list in this category, we focused our testing on beds that are compressed and shipped in a box. We then selected models that performed well in multiple performance categories such as pressure relief, edge support, and temperature control. We used everything from pressure-mapping pads to thermal monitors to capture data that matters. Lastly, to make sure our results represent the majority of sleepers today, our team consists of testers with different body types and position preferences.

What Type of Mattress in a Box Is Best For You?

With so many mattresses in a box to choose from, it’s hard to know where to start searching for a new bed. Here’s a quick look at the main mattress types to help you decide which is the best for you.

What It IsWho It’s Best ForWho It’s Not For
All-Foam MattressesFoam beds contain one or more foam layers that contour closely to your body. The deep cushioning eases pressure off sensitive joints and absorbs motion to prevent it from moving across the surface.• Sleepers with painful pressure points

• Side sleepers

• Co-sleepers who wake each other up with movement
• People who overheat easily during sleep

• Sleepers who don’t like feeling hugged by their mattress

• Shoppers who prioritize longevity, since foam has a shorter lifespan than other mattress types
Hybrid MattressesHybrid beds are made with sturdy coils on the bottom and cushioning layers on top, typically foam or latex. Hybrids have a nice mix of support and plushness so they’re popular with many sleepers, but each model differs in materials and design so it’s important to research the best fit.• Most side and back sleepers and some stomach sleepers

• People who prefer beds with some bounce

• Hot sleepers
• People who are easily awoken by a co-sleeper

• Sleepers who need deep contouring

• Shoppers on a very low budget
Latex MattressesLatex mattresses can be entirely latex or latex hybrid, but both are very responsive and known for durability and excellent cooling properties. These models are usually made with natural and organically sourced materials, which is great for eco-conscious shoppers.• Sleepers who prefer beds with some bounce

• Back and stomach sleepers

• People who sleep hot

• Eco-conscious shoppers
• Side sleepers with pressure buildup in the shoulders and hips

• People with a latex allergy

• Shoppers on a budget
Innerspring MattressesInnerspring beds have a thick layer of coils, similar to hybrids. But unlike hybrids, innersprings have thinner layers of cushioning on top. Some of the biggest benefits of innerspring beds are bounce, cooling, and price.• Sleepers who like bouncy beds

• Hot sleepers

• Budget-minded shoppers
• People who need deep cushioning

• Sleepers who wake easily when a partner moves
Airbed MattressesThe defining trait of airbed mattresses are the air chambers in the core: you can adjust these chambers until the firmness feels just right. Foam or latex layers on the surface add cushioning and contouring for your body. Just be prepared to pay a bit more for these models.• Sleepers who want to try out different firmness levels

• Co-sleepers needing a different firmness on each half of the bed

• People with painful pressure points
• Shoppers on a tight budget

• Sleepers who want a low maintenance bed, since airbed components may need repair over time

Why Should You Buy a Mattress in a Box?

Getting a mattress in a box can make buying a new mattress much simpler.

After a mattress is made, it can be compressed, rolled up, sealed in plastic, and placed in a box for easy shipping. After bringing the mattress in a box into your bedroom and removing the packaging, the mattress regains its normal size.

A mattress in a box is best if you prioritize value and convenience (and you want to avoid lugging a bulky mattress into your home). It can also be a great option if you would rather shop online than go to a mattress store.

  • Easier to transport: Because it’s compressed, a mattress in a box is much easier to ship. While the box can be heavy, it can comfortably fit through doorways and be carried up staircases to a bedroom without a ton of trouble.
  • Less expensive: It’s usually less expensive to buy a mattress in a box than a standard mattress. The wide selection of options online creates competitive pricing, and the lack of installation costs means you save when buying a mattress in a box.
  • Convenient shopping: When you shop online for a mattress in a box, you can avoid the inconvenience of going to a mattress store. Buying online puts a huge selection of mattresses at your fingertips and gives you access to tons of product information that can guide your purchase. You’ll have to do a bit more research, but you can shop at your own convenience.
  • Sleep trials and free shipping: Boxed beds usually ship for free to your front door. Since you’re not trying them in store, these mattresses typically come with a sleep trial to test out the bed with the option to get a full refund. Not all mattress in a box options come with a trial or free shipping, though, so make sure you always check the shipping and return policies.

What Should You Look for in a Boxed Bed?

I recommend thinking about five key points when you’re choosing a mattress in a box. These include the mattress type and quality, your sleeping position and body weight, your firmness and support needs, off-gassing from the mattress, and the right mattress size for your bedroom.

When thinking about these topics, I’ve found that it can be helpful to jot down a few notes to help you know what to look for when you’re comparing the different mattress options.

Mattress Type and Quality

The materials used in a mattress determine the mattress type. Most mattresses in a box are either all-foam or hybrid options.

In a foam mattress, all of the layers are foam, and it’s normal for multiple types of foams to be used. All-foam beds are generally lighter, cushier, and are more likely to hug your body.

In a hybrid mattress, the core is made with innerspring coils. On top of those coils you’ll find one or more layers of foam, latex, or other materials. Hybrids usually weigh more, they’re easier to move on, and the edges of the bed are much more supportive.

For both foam and hybrid mattresses, look for quality materials and thoughtful design. A well-built mattress will hold up better over time, improving your sleep and allowing you to get more value out of your mattress. At the end of the day, your options are up to your budget, but something I always tell people is to think of a mattress as an investment. You might save money up front by going for a cheaper bed, but they’ll typically wear out a few years sooner than a bed that’s built better.

Sleeping Position and Body Weight

Ever wonder why there are so many mattress options? A big reason is that there’s no one mattress that works for everyone. Everyone has different needs and preferences, and a lot of people aren’t even sure what theirs are. How you sleep and your body weight are two of the biggest factors that affect your mattress needs.

Sleeping on your side presses your shoulders and hips into the bed, so side sleepers usually need something a bit softer, with more contouring or “hug.” Back and stomach sleepers tend to need a firmer mattress to support their lower backs and keep their spines aligned.

If you weigh under 130 pounds, you are less likely to press into the cushioning of a mattress, so you’ll usually need a softer bed to get comfort and pressure relief. If you weigh over 230 pounds, you’ll probably sink deeper into the top layers, making it better to have a firmer mattress with a strong support system.

Firmness and Support

You’ve probably heard of firmness, which is how hard or soft a mattress feels. If you have a strong firmness preference, such as for an extra plush or firm sleep surface, make sure to account for that when shopping.

Support is how well a mattress cushions the body to promote spinal alignment. It’s a combination of cushion from the top layers and pushback from the bed’s core. Proper support can help keep you from waking up sore in the morning. Like with firmness, support needs vary from person to person.

Mattress firmness, contouring, sturdiness, and bounce can all influence support. Your sleep position and body weight can also affect your support needs and where you need the most cushioning.

We use a 10-point system to rate mattresses and give them firmnesses, with 1 being incredibly soft and 10 being close to sleeping on a hard, flat surface. Most beds out there are somewhere in the 4 (medium soft) to 7 (firm) range.

In my experience, a medium (5) or medium firm (6) mattress with moderate contouring works best for most sleepers. A lot of mattress in a box options out there match this description, but there are also plenty of choices if your needs are different.

I’ve put together a quick reference of firmness preferences based on body weight and sleeping position. These are based off of our team’s testing and research, so use these as a starting point to help guide you if you’re not sure what firmness you need:

WeightSide SleepersBack SleepersStomach Sleepers

Off-Gassing

When a mattress comes off the assembly line, its brand new materials can emit volatile organic compounds (VOCs) that collect in the sealed packaging of a mattress in a box.

Off-gassing of VOCs can cause an odor when your mattress is unboxed, and it tends to be worse with foam mattresses. The smell can be annoying, but it goes away pretty quickly. Make sure your bedroom has good ventilation, open windows and doors if you can, maybe even try a fan to help speed up the process. We find the smell typically disappears within a few days.

Size

After unboxing, a mattress in a box will grow in size, so you need to make sure in advance that you choose a mattress size that works for you, your bed partner if you share a bed, and the space in your bedroom.

If you’re not sure about the right size, measure the space in your bedroom. I’ve found that drawing my bedroom layout on paper helps me see how to strike a balance between open space and space for my mattress and other furniture.

How to Shop for a Mattress in a Box

Since a new bed can be a serious investment, I’ll give you a few more of my pro tips to help you prepare for the process and find the best value when shopping for a mattress in a box.

Do Your Research

Doing your research makes the whole bed-shopping process less stressful. While the number of options can be overwhelming, I recommend trying to narrow down your options as quickly as you can. Focus on your needs and your budget first, and keep notes about brands or models that fit you best. There are lots of beds out there with fun bells and whistles and impressive-sounding features, but before all that, you need to make sure it’ll be comfortable for you.

Taking notes helps you compare the construction, features, shipping policies, and sleep trial for different mattress options. Your research can also help you compare prices and find discounts to get the best deal.

Keep an Eye Out for Sales, Discounts, and Bundles

You can usually find a great deal on a mattress in a box thanks to seasonal sales, promo codes, and product bundles.

Deals are typically best around most major holidays and Black Friday. You can check directly on a mattress company’s website at any time for mattress sales and offers. You may also get a little something extra if you go for a bundle with a mattress, bed frame, pillows, bedding, or other accessories.

Pick Your Delivery and Setup Options

Depending on the company, you may have multiple delivery and setup options. Standard shipping of a mattress in a box to your front door is usually included in the price of the bed, and honestly, I’ve found that this works just fine for most people. Mattresses in a box can be a bit heavy, but they’re not too bad to move with two to three people or a furniture dolly.

If you want or need the added convenience of new mattress setup or removal of an old mattress, you can often pay extra for those services. Full White Glove delivery generally involves a team coming to your home to install your new mattress, dispose of all the packaging, and haul away your old bed.

Use Trials and Warranties to Your Advantage

I always tell people buying a mattress in a box to remember that they are protected by a sleep trial and a warranty.

With most mattress in a box options, a sleep trial lets you return the bed for a full refund if you’re unhappy with it for any reason. The bed doesn’t have to be defective – if you don’t like the way it feels and you’re still in the trial period, you can send it back. I definitely recommend putting a note on your calendar near the end of the sleep trial as a reminder to make your final decision about the mattress. New beds take a little time to break in, so if you can, make sure to try out your new bed for at least a month before returning it so you’re giving the bed a fair try.

Another tip is to read the return policy in advance. This will tell you how long the sleep trial lasts and whether there are any fees for returns.

Over the longer-term, a warranty can protect your purchase. Although it won’t cover normal wear-and-tear, it will cover you if your mattress breaks down prematurely.

How to Unbox a Mattress

You should always follow the unboxing guidelines from the manufacturer, but these are the typical steps in the process:

  1. Bring the box with the mattress into your bedroom
  2. Set the box flat on the ground
  3. Gently remove packing tape and open the box
  4. Slide the mattress out of the box
  5. Carefully cut open the plastic packaging, taking care not to puncture the mattress
  6. Place the mattress in its proper position in your bedroom
  7. Open a window or turn on a fan to allow for ventilation to reduce off-gassing
  8. Wait a few hours before sleeping on the mattress
  9. Remember that it may take a day or two for the mattress to reach its normal size

Dive Deeper – In-Depth Mattress Guides

In your research process, you may want to zero in on mattresses that offer standout performance in certain categories. These guides can help you find the top picks that match your needs.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long does it take to unbox a mattress?

It usually takes less than 15 minutes to fully unbox a mattress. While the process is quick, I advise against rushing through the steps. Taking your time helps make sure that you get the mattress positioned properly and you don’t cause any accidental damage to your mattress or to other items in your bedroom.

How can you trust an online mattress company is reputable?

The best way to know whether to trust an online mattress company is to check with reliable sources. A recommendation from a person or site that you know well can be a strong vote of confidence.

You can also check a company’s grade with the Better Business Bureau and look at customer reviews on external sites like Trustpilot and Yelp. While these sites won’t perfectly reflect how trustworthy a company is, they may alert you to potential concerns.

How long does a mattress in a box last?

A mattress in a box will usually last between five and nine years, or about as long as a standard mattress bought from a retail showroom. All-foam and hybrid mattresses have an average lifespan of six to seven years, while heavier all-latex mattresses tend to last from seven to nine years.

What kind of mattresses come in a box?

Foam, hybrid, and all-latex mattresses are available as a mattress in a box. Foam and hybrid beds are the most common and popular choices for mattresses in a box.

Why do boxed mattresses have an odor?

A mattress in a box can give off a “foamy” smell when it’s first unpackaged because of the release of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) generated during the manufacturing process. Although it’s common with boxed mattresses, the odor typically fades away within a few hours or days.
