What is Wikidata

[edit]

Wikidata is a Wikimedia project to create an open and collaborative database. It is for data what Wikimedia Commons is for media files: it centralizes access and management of structured data, such as interwiki references, external identifiers and statistical information. Wikidata contains data and labels in all languages for which there are Wikimedia projects.

Mission

[edit]

To discuss integration of Wikispecies with Wikidata, and serve as a collaboration platform with Wikidata:Wikispecies.

Current status

[edit]

As of October 2021, Wikispecies uses Wikidata for:

And, pending, for templates for journal articles.

Useful script

[edit]

The user script at d:User:Yair rand/WikidataInfo.js will insert, below a Wikispecies page's title, a link to the corresponding Wikidata item, or a link to create one if none exists. In the former case, it all also add the label and aliases, in your preferred language.

Simply add the code:

mw.loader.load("//www.wikidata.org/w/index.php?title=User:Yair rand/WikidataInfo.js&action=raw&ctype=text/javascript"); // Backlink: [[d:User:Yair rand/WikidataInfo.js]]

to your common.js page on this wiki; or to meta:Special:Mypage/global.js (the latter will make it work on all projects)

Templates

[edit]
  • {{P}} – for linking to Wikidata properties
  • {{Q}} – for linking to Wikidata items
  • {{Image}} – will transclude an image from Wikidata if no local value is specified
  • {{Authority control}} – transcludes identifiers from Wikidata
