The On Cloudswift was introduced in the early 2020s as a swift yet comfortable road running shoe. Today, the brand refers to it as “your pacemaker on pavement” as it aims to support runners traversing the city streets.

The Cloudswift is built upon a firm base of foam cushioning, with On’s signature CloudTec elements and a stiff, springy Speedboard offering shock absorption, responsiveness and comfort. All three aspects have been improved over the years, and 2025’s Cloudswift 4 uses the latest dual-density Helion superfoam with a soft top layer for gentle support and a firm lower one for durability, stability and protection. Updated CloudTec cushioning runs from heel to toe in undulating curves for softness and bounce, and a nylon-blend Speedboard puts a spring in each step. The sole unit has also been shaped in such a way that it naturally rolls forward, helping the runner to effortlessly propel themselves along.

Underfoot, the On Cloudswift is supported by a rubber outsole made from durable, non-abrasive rubber with a variety of grip lines providing solid traction. Flex grooves spread across its surface, and a channel moves through its centre to ensure that the foot can move freely. Although some earlier models would pick up stones, since 2023’s Cloudswift 3, the grooves have been designed differently so as to prevent this from happening.

The upper of the Cloudswift has always incorporated a sock-like design for a snug fit. It has been developed over time, delivering vast improvements on aspects such as lockdown and breathability. The latest models feature a one-piece knitted upper with an adaptive fit that accommodates a wide variety of foot types and a pull tab for easy on and off. Perforations across the forefoot allow maximum airflow, and the back of the foot is bolstered by foam padding and a strong yet flexible heel counter.

One distinctive aspect of all On Cloudswift designs is the midfoot panelling, which offers structural support to the flanks and secures the laces through sturdy eyelets, thus enhancing lockdown as well. On the most recent iterations, its exterior is coated in the same knitted material as the outer, giving a cohesive, sophisticated appearance that contributes to its overall suave aesthetic. This feature also appears on the Cloudswift 4 AD variant, whose water-repellent upper makes it great for use in wet weather.
