What should I know about using my Fitbit device to make contactless payments?

Add your credit and debit cards to certain Fitbit devices to make contactless payments right from your device—even when you’re traveling internationally.

Google Wallet is now available on Fitbit devices that support contactless payments. Fitbit Pay will no longer be available starting July 29, 2024*. Set up Google Wallet in the Fitbit app (version 4.14.1 or higher) to continue making contactless payments using your Fitbit device.

Note: If you're located in Saudi Arabia, Japan, or Taiwan, your device will continue to use Fitbit Pay past July 29.

Which Fitbit devices support contactless payments?

Make contactless payments with Fitbit Charge 4, Fitbit Charge 5, Fitbit Charge 6, Fitbit Sense, Fitbit Sense 2, Fitbit Versa 2, Fitbit Versa 3, Fitbit Versa 4, and editions of Fitbit Charge 3 and Fitbit Versa that contain an NFC chip.

Where can I use contactless payments?

Use your Fitbit device to purchase items in any store that accepts contactless payments or to ride select transit systems. To determine if the store accepts contactless payments, check for the symbol below on the payment terminal:

You can also use your Fitbit device on transit readers that accept contactless credit or debit card payments, such as Sydney's ferry and light rail networks. For more details, refer to How do I use my Fitbit device to pay for transit?

Why is the Fitbit app asking me to set up Google Wallet?

Fitbit is updating our contactless payments feature from Fitbit Pay to Google Wallet. This update will increase the number of banks and cards that are available for contactless payments on your Fitbit device and let you pay quickly everywhere Google Wallet is accepted. Google Wallet is available on Charge series, Sense series, and Versa series devices that support contactless payments.

To switch to Google Wallet:

  1. From the Today tab in the Fitbit app, tap the devices icon your device.
  2. Tap the Wallet tile.
  3. Tap Update to Google Wallet, and sign in to your Google account.
  4. Follow the on-screen instructions to add a card to Google Wallet. Note that your cards aren’t migrated from Fitbit Pay, so you need to add them to Google Wallet.

After setting up Google Wallet, the Wallet tile in the Fitbit app will change to the Google Wallet tile. For questions about Google Wallet that aren't related to your Fitbit device, refer to support.google.com.

*If you use an iPass (Taiwan) or Suica (Japan) card on your Fitbit device, you should continue to use Fitbit Pay.

Why don't I see the Google Wallet tile?

If you don't encounter the option to set up Google Wallet when you tap the Wallet tile in the Fitbit app:

  1. Check to see if Google Wallet is available in your country: Where you can use Google Wallet.
  2. Make sure your Fitbit device is up-to-date. For instructions, refer to How do I update my Fitbit device?
  3. If you recently updated your Fitbit device, wait 24 hours, and then check the Wallet tile again.
Note: If you’re located in Saudi Arabia, Japan or Taiwan, your device uses Fitbit Pay.
Do I need to install the Google Wallet app on my phone?
You don’t need to install Google Wallet on your phone in order to use Google Wallet on your Fitbit device.
Does my Fitbit device use Google Wallet?

From the Today tab in the Fitbit app, tap the devices icon your device Wallet.

  • If you encounter the Google Wallet tile, you use Google Wallet for contactless payments.
How do I set up contactless payments?

To start, add at least 1 credit or debit card from a participating bank in the Fitbit app:

  1. With your device nearby, from the Today tab in the Fitbit app, and tap the devices icon .
  2. Tap your device, then tap the Google Wallet tile.
  3. Follow the on-screen instructions to add a payment card. In some cases, your bank may require additional verification. If you’re setting up contactless payments for the first time, you may be prompted to set a 4-digit PIN code for your device. 
    Note: The passcode protection must be enabled for your phone.
  4. After you add a card, follow the on-screen instructions to turn on notifications for your phone (if you haven’t already done so) to complete the setup.

You can add additional cards and choose which card to set as the default payment option on your device from the Google Wallet tile.

How do I make a payment with my Fitbit device?

Open the payments screen on your device:

  • Charge 5 and Charge 6–Swipe down from the clock face and tap Payments or Google Wallet.
  • Versa, and Versa 2—Swipe down from the top of your screen. After your notifications appear, swipe down again to open the control center. Tap the Wallet icon .
  • Sense and Versa 3—Open the Wallet app . For faster access to payments, add it as a button shortcut in the Settings app Shortcuts.
  • Sense 2 and Versa 4–Open the Google Wallet app or Wallet app . For faster access to payments, add it as a button shortcut in the Settings app Shortcut.
  • All other devices—When you’re ready to pay, press and hold the left button on your device for 2 seconds. Swipe to the payments screen if it's not shown.
  1. If prompted, enter your 4-digit device PIN code. Your default card appears on the screen.

  2. To pay with your default card, hold your wrist near the payment terminal. To pay with a different card:
    • Charge 3 and Charge 4—Tap the screen to find the card you want to use, and then hold your wrist near the payment terminal.
    • Charge 5 and Charge 6—Swipe to find the card you want to use, and hold your wrist near the payment terminal.
    • Sense 2, Versa, Versa 2, and Versa 4—Swipe up to find the card you want to use, and then hold your wrist near the payment terminal.
    • Sense and Versa 3—Swipe up to find the card you want to use, and tap it. Then hold your wrist near the payment terminal.

When the payment succeeds, your device vibrates and you’ll receive a confirmation on the screen.

If the payment terminal doesn’t recognize your Fitbit device, make sure the device face is near the reader and that the cashier knows you’re using a contactless payment.

Note: The payments screen might be hidden if you haven't set up contactless payments. If you don't see the payments screen, add a card to your Fitbit device by following the instructions on How do I set up contactless payments?

Customers in Australia: If you have a credit or debit card from an Australian bank, hold your device near the payment terminal to pay. If your card is from a bank outside of Australia, or if you wish to pay with a card that isn't your default card, complete steps 1-3 above.

If the purchase amount exceeds $100 AU, follow the instructions on the payment terminal. If prompted for a PIN code, enter the PIN code for your card (not your device).

What can I do if my bank or card isn't supported?

In many countries, you can use a payment app. Download the app on your phone, and connect your existing bank account. Add your new digital account to your Fitbit device by following the instructions in How do I set up contactless payments?

Note: We are supporting new cards regularly. For example, support for American Express cards in the US will be available in the coming weeks.

How do I use my Fitbit device to pay for transit?

Use your Fitbit device to tap on and off at transit readers that accept contactless credit or debit card payments. To pay with your device, follow the steps listed in How do I make a payment with my Fitbit device?

Note: Pay with the same card on your Fitbit device when you tap the transit reader at the start and end of your trip. Make sure your device is charged before beginning your trip.
Can I use my Fitbit device to pay with OMNY in New York City?

Use any supported card on OMNY readers at certain NYC MTA stations and buses. For more information about OMNY, refer to MTA’s related article.

Can I use my Fitbit device to pay for transit in Singapore?

Use your Fitbit device on trains and buses in Singapore. For a list of supported cards, check the Singapore section in the list of supported banks.

To pay with a Visa card that you added to your Fitbit device before February 26, 2019, remove the card in the Fitbit app, and then add the card as if you’re setting it up for the first time. If you continue to have issues, contact your bank for more information.
How do I change the default card on my Fitbit device?
When you're ready to pay, your default card appears on your device's screen. To change your default card:
Google Wallet
  1. From the Today tab in the Fitbit app, tap the devices icon your device.
  2. Tap the Google Wallet tile.
  3. Tap the card you want to set as the default option.
  4. Tap Details.
  5. Tap Make default for contactless on watch.
 
How do I change the order of the cards on my Fitbit device?
To change the order of the cards on your device:
Google Wallet
  1. From the Today tab in the Fitbit app, tap the devices icon your device.
  2. Tap the Google Wallet tile. Your cards are listed in the order they appear on your Fitbit device.
  3. Hold and drag a card to change the order of the cards. Release the card in the position you prefer.
 
Do I have to enter a PIN code to make a payment?

When you set up contactless payments, you’re prompted to set a personal 4-digit PIN code.

To authorize a payment, enter your PIN code the first time you make a contactless payment since last taking off your device, or if it's been 24 hours since you made a payment.

Do I need to have my phone nearby to pay with my Fitbit device?
You don’t need to have your phone nearby to pay with your Fitbit device. After you set up contactless payments, you can make payments from your device and leave your phone at home.
Where can I see a list of transactions made with my Fitbit device?

Many banks allow you to see your 3 most recent transactions made with your Fitbit device in the Fitbit app.

To check your recent transactions:

  1. From the Today tab in the Fitbit app, tap the devices icon your device.
  2. Tap the Google Wallet or Wallet tile.
  3. Tap the card you added to your device and then swipe up to see your 3 most recent transactions.

If this feature isn't available for your card, or if you want to check the history of your transactions, review your bank or credit card statement.

Why was my transaction declined?
If your payment was declined, contact your bank for more information.
Are contactless payments on my Fitbit device secure?

Google Wallet protects your payment info with multiple layers of security, using one of the world’s most advanced security infrastructures to help keep your account safe. When you pay in stores, Google Wallet doesn’t share your actual card number, so your information stays secure. Using contactless payments on your Fitbit device also requires you to use a personal 4-digit PIN code for an added layer of protection.

How do I remove a card from my Fitbit device?

After you delete a card, the card is removed from the Fitbit app and you can no longer use it to make payments with your device.

Google Wallet
  1. From the Today tab in the Fitbit app, tap the devices icon your device.
  2. Tap the Google Wallet tile.
  3. Tap the card you want to delete.
  4. Tap DetailsRemove payment method.

To suspend a card:

  1. From the Today tab in the Fitbit app, tap the devices icon your device.
  2. Tap the Wallet tile.
  3. Tap the card you want to suspend.
  4. Tap Suspend Card.

To unsuspend your card, repeat the steps above and then tap Unsuspend Card.

What should I do if I lose my Fitbit device?

If you lose your device, you can remove the cards you added to the device using the Fitbit app. For instructions, refer to How do I remove a card from my Fitbit device?

You can still make payments using the physical debit or credit cards, so contact your bank if the cards were lost or stolen.

Keep in mind that no one can use your device to make a payment without first entering your personal 4-digit PIN code.

How do I reset the PIN code for my Fitbit device?
Reset the PIN code for your device in the Fitbit app. For instructions, refer to How do I use the device lock on my Fitbit device?
Can I use my Fitbit device to make payments internationally?
You can use your Fitbit device when traveling internationally at stores that accept contactless payments. Note that foreign transaction fees may apply to purchases made internationally depending on your bank’s policy.
Do I earn points or rewards for purchases made with my Fitbit device?
When you make purchases with your Fitbit device, you’ll continue to earn points or rewards that your credit or debit cards provide.
Can I use a gift card with contactless payments?
Currently, gift cards don’t work with contactless payments.
I want to give my watch to someone else. What should I do?

Factory reset your device to erase apps and personal data from the device*. For instructions, refer to How do I erase my Fitbit device?

Note: If you use Suica on your Fitbit device, erasing your Fitbit device doesn't remove Suica. Before giving your Fitbit device to another person, remove Suica in the Fitbit app.
I entered my PIN code incorrectly. How do I unlock my watch with my phone?
If you enter an incorrect PIN code 10 times, you're prompted to unlock your Fitbit device in the Fitbit app. For instructions, refer to How do I use the device lock on my Fitbit device?

Why can't I add my American Express card to Google Wallet?

At this time, American Express cards can't be added to Google Wallet for Fitbit, but this feature is coming soon.

Why can't I set up Google Wallet?

Google Wallet for Fitbit may not yet be available in your region. We are working on expanding the availability of Google Wallet for Fitbit.
