Hello community, we have some updates on the Private Incident Reporting System – The system is looking to make it easier for editors to ask for help if they are harassed or abused.
Our goal for the past months was to understand the problem space and your expectations of this project. Following the feedback submitted to date (thank you!), we have developed the next steps. Wikimedia Ukraine, in cooperation with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine and Ukrainian Institute, has launched the third edition of writing challenge "Ukraine's Cultural Diplomacy Month", which lasts from 1st until 31st March 2023. The campaign is dedicated to famous Ukrainian artists of cinema, music, literature, architecture, design and cultural phenomena of Ukraine that are now part of world heritage. We accept contribution in every language! The most active contesters will receive prizes.
We invite you to take part and help us improve the coverage of Ukrainian culture on Wikipedia in your language! Also, we plan to set up a banner to notify users of the possibility to participate in such a challenge!

Reusing references: Can we look over your shoulder?

The Technical Wishes team at Wikimedia Deutschland is planning to make reusing references easier. For our research, we are looking for wiki contributors willing to show us how they are interacting with references.
- The format will be a 1-hour video call, where you would share your screen. More information here.
- Interviews can be conducted in English, German or Dutch.
- Compensation is available.
- Sessions will be held in January and February.
- Sign up here if you are interested.
- Please note that we probably won’t be able to have sessions with everyone who is interested. Our UX researcher will try to create a good balance of wiki contributors, e.g. in terms of wiki experience, tech experience, editing preferences, gender, disability and more. If you’re a fit, she will reach out to you to schedule an appointment.

Hej. I flera år har gemenskapens medlemmar efterfrågat en enkelt sätt att återanvända referenser med olika detaljer. Nu kommer en MediaWiki-lösning: Den nya funktionen för underreferenser kommer fungera i wikitext och VisualEditor och kommer förbättra existerande referenssystem. Du kan fortsätta använda olika sätt att använda referenser men du kommer förmodligen stöta på underreferenser i artiklar skrivna av andra användare. Mer information på projektsidan.
Vi vill veta vad du tycker för att se till att funktionen fungerar som den ska för dig:
- Testa gärna den aktuella utvecklingsfasen på beta-wiki och berätta vad du tycker.

The scrutineers have finished reviewing the vote and the Elections Committee have certified the results for the Universal Code of Conduct Coordinating Committee (U4C) special election.
I am pleased to announce the following individual as regional members of the U4C, who will fulfill a term until 15 June 2026:
- North America (USA and Canada)
- Ajraddatz
The following seats were not filled during this special election:
- Latin America and Caribbean
- Central and East Europe (CEE)
- Sub-Saharan Africa
- South Asia
- The four remaining Community-At-Large seats

Wikimedia Foundation kommer att växla trafiken mellan sina datacenter. Det kommer att se till att Wikipedia och andra Wikimedia-wikier kan förbli online, även om någon form av katastrof skulle inträffa.
All trafik kommer att bytas 25 september. Övergången börjar 15:00 UTC.
På grund av begränsningar i MediaWiki, måste tyvärr all redigering upphöra medan övergången pågår. Vi ber om ursäkt för avbrottet och arbetar för att minimera det i framtiden.
En notis om det här kommer visas på alla wikier 30 minuter innan händelsen inträffar. Bannern kommer synas fram tills slutet av operationen.
Under en kort tidsperiod kommer det bara vara möjligt att läsa, men inte redigera alla wikier.
- Man kommer inte kunna redigera i upp till en timme på onsdag 25 september 2024.
- Försöker du redigera eller spara något under denna tid kommer du få ett felmeddelande. Vi hoppas att inga redigeringar går förlorade under dessa minuter, men vi kan inte garantera det. Om du ser felmeddelandet, vänligen vänta tills allt fungerar som normalt igen. Sedan borde du kunna spara din redigering. Vi rekommenderar ändå att du skapar kopior av dina ändringar, för säkerhets skull.
Andra effekter:
- Bakgrundsjobb kommer vara långsammare och vissa kanske försvinner. Rödlänkar kanske inte uppdateras lika snabbt som vanligt. Om du skapar en artikel som det länkas till någon annanstans ifrån, kommer länken förbli röd längre än vanligt. En del långtidsskript kommer att behöva stoppas.
- Vi förväntar oss att kodutrullningen sker precis som vilken annan vecka som helst. Viss kodfrysning kan däremot stundtals ske punktligt om operationen kräver det efteråt.
- GitLab kommer vara otillgänglig i ungefär 90 minuter.
Projektet kan skjutas fram om det skulle behövas. Du kan läsa tidsschema på wikitech.wikimedia.org. Alla ändringar kommer att tillkännages i tidsplanen.

Thank you to everyone who participated in the 2024 Wikimedia Foundation Board of Trustees election. Close to 6000 community members from more than 180 wiki projects have voted.

While these candidates have been ranked through the vote, they still need to be appointed to the Board of Trustees. They need to pass a successful background check and meet the qualifications outlined in the Bylaws. New trustees will be appointed at the next Board meeting in December 2024.

'Wikidata item' link is moving, finally.

The scheduled rollout date of 04.10.2024 was delayed due to a necessary request for Mobile/MinervaNeue skin. I am happy to inform that the global rollout can now proceed and will occur later today, 22.10.2024 at 15:00 UTC-2. Please let us know if you notice any problems or bugs after this change.
