Ruthie Foster
A singular artist whose performances mix pure passion with contagious joy, Ruthie Foster makes a welcome return to our stage this summer. Encompassing gospel, blues, folk, and country, her songs explore love, loss and resilience. Raised in a family of gospel singers in rural Texas, this longtime VFMF favourite remains rooted in tradition, but her expressive sound is not bound by a single genre of music.
Described by Rolling Stone as “pure magic to watch and hear”, her extraordinary live performances captivate audiences. If we had a roof at Jericho Beach, her voice would blow it off! This February, Ruthie Foster won the Grammy for Best Contemporary Blues Album. Mileage celebrates her career as a Black woman and LGBTQ+ artist and is a testament to the power of authenticity and resilience in music.

TEKE::TEKE
Blending traditional Japanese instruments, flute, and trombone with surf guitar, punk, Afrobeat, and art-rock influences, TEKE::TEKE create a frenetic and modern twist on 1960s – 70s psychedelic Japanese soundtracks.
Their performances are described as unpredictable, high-energy, and intensely engaging, with Maya Kuroki’s powerful vocal presence adding to the band’s raw intensity. The music is endlessly cinematic and surprising; TEKE::TEKE never seems to go where you expect them to.
The New Yorker praised their “spitfire songs” and “manic energy,” emphasizing their ability to create a sound that feels both chaotic and cohesive.
A HUGE thank you to all of our donors for your ongoing generosity and support of the Vancouver Folk Music Festival! Let’s keep the music playing for 2025 and beyond!
