Nosferatu Movie Review : This Gothic tale is a haunting story of artistry and atmosphere

Story: Solicitor and real estate agent Thomas journeys to Transylvania to finalize a deed with Count Orlok. During his absence, Thomas’s wife experiences terrifying visions and falls under the spell of an evil force.

Review: Robert Eggers, acclaimed for ‘The Witch’ and ‘The Lighthouse,’ further cements his place in the horror genre with ‘Nosferatu.’ Eggers’ third horror outing is a fascinating blend of history and mythology, weaving a Gothic tale that grips the audience throughout. Eggers masterfully constructs a chilling atmosphere, highlighted by striking cinematography, meticulous costume and set design, and powerful performances. The film’s impeccable attention to detail transports viewers to 1838 Germany with remarkable authenticity. ‘Nosferatu’ is a bold and ambitious adaptation that not only honours its classic origins but also offers a fresh, enthralling take on the timeless story. It stands as a testament to Eggers' evolving mastery of the genre.

The film opens in the town of Wisborg, Germany, in 1838, where Ellen (Lily Rose-Depp) lives with her husband, Thomas (Nicholas Hoult), a real estate agent. Thomas is tasked by his employer with securing a deed to sell a dilapidated house to the eccentric Count Orlok (Bill Skarsgard), driven by the promise of a substantial commission. Despite Ellen’s warnings based on a foreboding dream she had before their wedding about marrying death, Thomas insists on making the journey to Transylvania. He leaves Ellen in the care of his friend Friedrich (Aaron Taylor-Johnson) and Friedrich’s wife, Anna (Emma Corrin). Upon meeting the menacing Count Orlok, Thomas quickly realizes that Orlok is a vampire. Alarmed by the danger, Thomas rushes back to Wisborg to protect Ellen, who has begun suffering from sleepwalking and seizures. When her doctor, Sievers (Ralph Ineson), consults his mentor, Professor Franz (Willem Dafoe), they conclude that Ellen is possessed by Nosferatu, a demonic vampire.

This Gothic horror is a visual spectacle, draped in a dark, cold palette that still delivers an engaging and immersive plot. The opulent sets and meticulously crafted costumes perfectly capture the era, adding depth to the film’s authenticity. Instead of relying on overt scares, it excels at building eerie, suspenseful moments that enhance its narrative. As a tribute to FW Murnau’s ‘Nosferatu,’ the film stands out for its artistry and meticulous craftsmanship. It solidifies Eggers' reputation as an auteur in the horror genre, showcasing his ability to handle such material with finesse and style. While the deliberate slow pacing may not appeal to all, it rewards those who appreciate a slow-burn, atmospheric experience. Ultimately, ‘Nosferatu’ is a testament to the power of visual storytelling, demanding to be appreciated for its depth and detail.

Much of the film’s success can be attributed to its exceptional casting. Lily-Rose Depp shines as the tormented Ellen, delivering a performance that is both heart-wrenching and haunting. Nicholas Hoult brings sincerity to the role of Thomas, convincingly portraying a young man driven by a desire to ensure his wife’s happiness and provide her with life’s pleasures. Willem Dafoe enters later in the film and instantly commands attention with his presence. However, the casting's only weak point is Bill Skarsgard as Count Orlok. Though unrecognizable, he occasionally goes overboard, with a heavy baritone that feels unnecessary in some scenes. This Gothic spectacle is a seductive visual marvel.
