The Trick to Australian Kids Shoe Size Conversion

There is no standard Australian kids shoe sizing – so different brands will size their shoes differently.

This is why you should always base your purchase on a foot measurement and the shoe size inner measurement.

There are a few different methods you can use to measure your child’s feet. We’ll run you through the three most simple.

Our Australian Kids Shoe Size Conversion Chart

We have created a conversion chart that allows you to compare the approximate Aus shoe size for all the shoes we stock.

This chart is specific to OUR STORE and OUR SHOES.

Our chart below will help you work out the approximate Aus size you need based on your child’s foot measurement plus growth room. We do recommend you double-check the size chart on the shoe style you are purchasing as there can be slight variations between brands and styles, but using this chart gives you a great starting point!

Shoe Size Gauge

Remember that device the shop assistant would use to measure your feet back when you were a kid? These are still used in shoe shops today or can be purchased online. They’re a simple and accurate way to get the right size the first try.

Here’s how to use a shoe size gauge:

  1. Ask your child to stand up straight and face forwards.
  2. Place their heel in the heel cup of the device. They should have equal weight in both feet.
  3. Clasp the ankle and heel cup together to ensure the foot is correctly positioned.
  4. Press their toes down gently and look directly down at the measurement for the longest toe (not necessarily the first).
  5. Repeat for the other foot.
  6. Opt for the size appropriate for the largest foot.

Shoe Fit Tips

These tips can help you to select the right sized shoe for your child right now. There are a few more tips you should keep in mind to make sure you get the most out of their shoes and maintain their foot health:

  • Measure your kids’ feet every few months – they go up half a shoe size on average during this time!
  • Many kids shoes come with narrow and wide fits. Make sure you match the width of their feet too for the best fit.
  • The widest part of the shoe should match up with the widest part of your child’s foot to avoid painful rubbing.
  • Wait until the end of the day to measure your child’s foot size. A shoe that fits in the morning might not fit that same day in the afternoon due to natural bloating.
  • Get the size that fits perfectly right then and there to avoid painful blisters or a “break-in” preiod – they’ll have outgrown them by the time they’re broken in!
  • If your child’s feet are different sizes, the bigger size is generally the best option. Shoes that are too small can cause deformities, ingrown nails and more.

Importance of Wearing the Right Shoe Size

It’s important you get the right shoe size at all stages of life, but none more important than the formative growing years. Our feet affect the way we walk and even our posture.

From bunions and corns, to aching arches, the wrong size shoe can set your child’s feet up for failure. Measuring their foot accurately and finding their best fit for their new kicks.

Now that you know how to measure those feet, it’s time to go shopping!
