Cole is a teenager who is controlled by anger and hatred, and has rich parents.
Cole started off in the book as a bully. Smashing Peter Driscal's face into the sidewalk is just one of many examples, not to mention robbing a hardware store. Cole was a senseless, selfish, brat that thinks he can get away with anything. His parents are crap, and when Cole gets in trouble they just get their lawyer, Nathaniel Blackwood, to get him out of trouble. His parents didn't even complain when Cole was sentenced to an island to a year. I mean a whole year without seeing your only son, and not even a little protest.
Then Cole gets better after he is sentenced to a year on an island for the incident with Peter Driscal. However, he is mauled by a spirit bear and nearly dies. This drastically changes Cole's way of thinking, as nobody believes that it was a Spirit Bear that attacked him. The only evidence that Cole has is his memory and a piece of white fur from the spirit bear. He then goes onto believe that the opinion that matters to him is his.
