A teenager is in critical condition after he was hit while crossing the road in Cranston Friday evening.

Cranston Police tell NBC 10 News a 13-year-old boy was struck by a truck around 5 p.m. along Phenix Avenue near Atwood Avenue.

"The truck was traveling southbound on Phenix, so right now, investigators need to get more information about what was happening," Major Todd Patalano told NBC 10's Cal Dymowski on the scene.

The boy was rushed to Hasbro Children's Hospital in Providence with serious injuries. Police say the driver is fully cooperating with them, and the parents of the teen have been notified.

An NBC 10 News crew spotted evidence markers in the middle of the street, along with a small pile of clothing.

Patalano says the boy was not crossing in a crosswalk. Investigators blocked off a section of Phenix Avenue for a few hours Friday evening as they interviewed witnesses and reviewed nearby footage. It's since been re-opened.

Police and those in the area say the road can get very busy with traffic.

"There are cars that just go wicked fast over here, so it's scary," said Nicole Nadich of Cranston, who didn't see the incident unfold but lives in the area. "It's sad. As a mom, I can only imagine what [his] mom is going through right now. It's awful."

The investigation is ongoing, but police say earlier indicators don't point to speed as a factor.

It's unclear if the driver will be facing any charges.

NBC 10's Cal Dymowski contributed to this report.
