Wie ist es dazu gekommen? Im Folgenden möchte ich Ergebnisse und Fragestellungen der neueren "\i \Tissensd1aftsgeschichtsschreibuug auf ihre Bedeutung für eine allgemeine Geschichte der Modeme hin umrißartig thematisieren. Dabei geht es nicht allein um das Ensemble kultureller Umbrüche um 1900, für das sich der Terminus ,die Moderne' als Kollektivsingular eingebürgert hat. Es handelt sich vielmehr um einen Versuch, die unterschiedlichen Rollen der vVissenschaften im vielscliichtigen Prozeß der Modernisierung zu bestimmen und das Verhältnis dieser Entwicklungen zu ,der Modeme', hier verstanden als Komplex von Denk-und St ilinhalten, näher zu bestimmen. Gewöhnlich sieht man die Anfänge der Moderne, was die Wissenschaften betrifft, in der Entstehung der neuen Naturphilosophie im 17. und ihrer Durchsetzung und Übertragung auf die Moralphilosophie und Staatslehre im 18. Jahrhundert. Gleichwohl werden viele Beispiele der folgenden Analyse aus dem 19. Jahrhundert kommen, denn in dieser Zeit wurde die soziale, wirtschaftliche und kulturelle Infrastruktnr vollendet, die die neue Naturphilosophie des 17. The changes that have occurred both in scientific institutions and in the direction and content of research in the course of revolutions or comparable political changes pose significant challenges to such accounts.

The paper is an initial effort to examine the attempted political purge of formerly Nazi scientis... more The paper is an initial effort to examine the attempted political purge of formerly Nazi scientists and scholars from German academic institutions after 1945 in all four Allied occupation zones, and to consider the impact of denazification on scientific research programs on the basis of selected case studies. Contrary to common accounts distinguishing between strict purges in the Soviet zone and the GDR and the restoration of dismissed Nazi scientists in the Western zones and the FRG, it is argued here (1) that initially purges were strict in the Soviet and American, and less so in the British and French zones, and further (2) that former Nazi scientists were also able to re-establish themselves in the GDR. The continuities that undoubtedly resulted from this process did not happen automatically, but required considerable effort; it is therefore proposed to speak of "constructed continuities" in such cases.

Science and music. Introductory remarks. The article presents a brief introduction to “Science an... more Science and music. Introductory remarks. The article presents a brief introduction to “Science and Music”, theme of the 44th symposium of the “Society for History of Sciences” held in Munich in Mai 2007. The text begins with a brief reference to the numerous biographical connections between the two fields, but focuses primarily on topics that reveal music and the sciences to be results of shared cultural practices. Examples include: (1) shared objects in the material sense, meaning the use of particular instruments in both music and the sciences; (2) shared semantics, metaphors, and concepts, for example the use of the concepts like clang or tone color in acoustics and the psychology of audition, or talk of ‘mood’ and ‘harmony’ in both music and in literature; (3) direct interactions between mathematics, physics and music, for example in the electronic music of the twentieth century.

Die Wandlungen in Politik, Wirtschaft und Gesellschaft in Europa nach 1989 sind fur Historiker ei... more Die Wandlungen in Politik, Wirtschaft und Gesellschaft in Europa nach 1989 sind fur Historiker eine Herausforderung ersten Ranges, handelt es sich doch, so wird immer wieder gesagt, um ein einmaliges und in diesem Sinne historisches Ereignis, dem man sich vorerst nur beschreibend annahern konne. Die deutsche Variante dieses Transformationsprozesses ist allerdings doppelt einmalig, wenn man sie mit anderen Landern des ehemaligen Ostblocks vergleicht. Dort gibt es ja, wie mittel- und osteuropaische Kollegen nicht mude werden zu betonen, kein Westungarn oder Westpolen, das als Geldgeber und politischer Promotor — oder aber als Bremser — wirken konnte.

In diesem Aufsatz soll ein skizzenhafter Überblick über ein breites Feld versucht werden. Nach ku... more In diesem Aufsatz soll ein skizzenhafter Überblick über ein breites Feld versucht werden. Nach kurzen Vorbemerkungen zu den Begrifflichkeiten im Titel des Beitrags sowie zur Entwicklung der Hochschulen bis 1918 wird die allgemeine Situation der Hochschulen in jedem der politischen Umbrüche bis 1945 besprochen. Dabei soll keine teleologische Perspektive mit bereits bekanntem Ausgang zum Besten gegeben, sondern eine prozesshafte Betrachtung der jeweiligen Ereignisse angedeutet werden. Abschließend werden Überlegungen zu den Möglichkeiten und Grenzen eines Gesamtnarrativs der Geschichte der Hochschulen in Österreich in dieser politisch sehr bewegten Zeit zur Diskussion gestellt.

The essays in this volume are by specialists in intellectual history, history of science, and psychology, who focus on the social ad cultural history of the discipline with an emphasis on ideas and institutions. The topics addressed include: the structure of psychological research before and during the ascendancy of behaviorism, the role of women in American psychology to 1940, and the intellectual career of one important emigre from Europe, the perceptual theorist Egon Brunswik. Further essays discuss politics and psychology in Germany and Austria before and during the Nazi era, British psychoanalysts in colonial India, the social history of psychology in China, and ideological and religious influences on the thinking of important figures such as Vygotsky, Piaget, and Freud. The concluding chapter lays the foundations for a comparative social and cultural history of twentieth-century psychology.
