Brief career summary
After completing her DPhil thesis "A unified analysis of discretisation methods" at Oxford in 1984, Jennifer was awarded a Junior Research Fellowship at St. John's College, Oxford. After eighteen months, she left Oxford to take up a position in the Theoretical Physics Department of the National Radiological Protection Board in south Oxfordshire.
In 1987, Jennifer joined the Numerical Analysis Group at the Harwell Laboratory. The Group moved to the Atlas Centre at the Rutherford Appleton Laboratory in 1990. In 2007, she became the Group Leader, a role she continued until 2018 (with the Group changing its name to the Computational Mathematics Group in 2017). In 2011, Jennifer became an STFC Individual Merit Research Fellow. Much of her work at STFC and that of the Group has been funded by EPSRC research grants. She is the author of many software packages that are available within the HSL Mathematical Software Library.
In 2016, Jennifer was appointed Professor of Mathematics at the University of Reading. She now works part time (2 days a week) for STFC as a Principal Researcher and Fellow in Computational Mathematics and spends the rest of her time at the University of Reading. She was Director at Reading of the EPSRC Centre for Doctoral Training in the Mathematics of Planet Earth from 2016 to 2022 and is now the Director at Reading of the EPSRC Centre for Doctoral Training in Mathematics for our Future Climate (2024-- ). This is a joint centre with Imperial College London and the University of Southampton MFC CDT.
Jennifer has co-authored with her collaborator Miroslav Tuma from Charles University in Prague a research monograph Algorithms for Sparse Linear Systems, ISBN: 978-3-031-25819-0 (2023). This is available as open access (funded by the University of Reading) and can be downloaded here.
Jennifer is an elected SIAM Fellow. She was the President of SIAM UKIE (2021--23) and the Vice President (2015--17). She is a Fellow of the Institute of Mathematics and its Applications (IMA) and was an elected member of the IMA Council (2013--16). She is an elected member of the IFIP Working Group 2.5 on Numerical Software, she served on the Women in Mathematics Committee of the London Mathematical Society (2006--14) and on the SIAM Program Committee (2013--16). She is an Associate Editor of ACM Transactions on Mathematical Software and formerly an Associate Editor of the SIAM Journal of Scientific Computing (2016--2022).
Research interests include:
- Numerical linear algebra (including direct and iterative methods and preconditioners).
- Algorithm design/implementation, especially for sparse linear systems, sparse least squares.
- Large-scale scientific computation.
- The Mathematics of Planet Earth and Mathematics for our Future Climate.
My key scientific contributions, which have involved studying the underlying mathematics, new analysis and theoretical developments, leading to novel algorithms and mathematical software, include:
- Sparse matrix ordering algorithms (bandwidth and profile minimisation and algorithms designed for challenging symmetric indefinite matrices to limit the need for numerical pivoting while maintaining sparsity and stability);
- Algorithms to improve the efficiency and applicability of direct solvers for sparse linear systems (including novel out-of-core techniques, the introduction of multiple front algorithms for coarse-grained parallelism, the use of single precision within a sparse double precision solver, and sparse matrix scaling algorithms);
- Robust limited memory incomplete factorization preconditioners for sparse linear systems and large-scale sparse (and mixed sparse-dense) least squares problems.
This work has led to the publication of an open access research monograph Algorithms for Sparse Linear Systems, ISBN: 978-3-031-25819-0 (2023) [pdf], research papers and software in the HSL and SPRAL Mathematical Software Libraries.
About the monograph Algorithms for Sparse Linear Systems
Large sparse linear systems of equations are ubiquitous in science, engineering and beyond. This open access monograph focuses on factorization algorithms for solving such systems. It presents classical techniques for complete factorizations that are used in sparse direct methods and discusses the computation of approximate direct and inverse factorizations that are key to constructing general-purpose algebraic preconditioners for iterative solvers. A unified framework is used that emphasizes the underlying sparsity structures and highlights the importance of understanding sparse direct methods when developing algebraic preconditioners. Theoretical results are complemented by sparse matrix algorithm outlines.
This monograph is aimed at students of applied mathematics and scientific computing, as well as computational scientists and software developers who are interested in understanding the theory and algorithms needed to tackle sparse systems. It is assumed that the reader has completed a basic course in linear algebra and numerical mathematics.
