GOLDSBORO, Wayne County — The North Carolina State Highway Patrol is investigating after a Wayne County Sheriff’s deputy was seriously injured in a car crash near Dudley.
Officials say the crash occurred around 7:30 p.m. Wednesday when Wayne County Deputy Matt Marino's patrol vehicle collided with a private citizen’s vehicle at the intersection of Sleepy Creek and Ruskin roads.
The deputy was responding to a call at the time of the collision, according to investigators.
"Sheriff Larry Pierce asks for prayers for Wayne County Deputy Matt Marino and his family. Deputy Marino was seriously injured in a traffic crash last night. Deputy Marino was responding to a call for assistance from a citizen when he was involved in the traffic crash at the intersection of Sleepy Creek Road and Ruskin Road. Deputy Marino was taken to Wayne UNC Healthcare for treatment and later transferred to Vidant Medical in Greenville. There were three other individuals in the vehicle which struck Deputy Marino's patrol car. These individuals were also seriously injured and Sheriff Pierce also asks for prayers for them," the office said in a Facebook post.
Four people, including the deputy, were transported to the hospital in Goldsboro and Marino was later transferred to Vidant Medical in Greenville.
He is in serious, but stable condition.
