Sense of Loss

Are you doing well? It's been too long since we've spoken. Why don't you stop by? -Duncan

(You go speak to Duncan per his request.)

Duncan
Ah, (Character Name). I was hoping you would have time to stop by. I've heard many strange rumors from the south. Is it true about your battle with the lost hero?

> Prompt: The world is a confusing place.

(Duncan shakes his head with a sad sigh.)

Duncan
You seem disheartened, my friend. The title of hero bears a hefty burden, and those who wear it often find themselves becoming agents of the very evil they fought to stop.

(Duncan's eyes soften as they meet yours.)

Duncan
Not all heroes suffer a tragic fate, my young friend. The good you have done for the people of this world is immeasurable.

(A smile touches Duncan's lips.)

Duncan
Do you remember when you first came to me? You were so eager to help people with the tiniest favors. There was nothing but kindness and wonder in your eyes.

> Prompt: Vaguely.

Duncan
Meven was looking for someone to take a delivery into Dunbarton. I' m sure he would be excited to have a great hero like you help with such an easy task.
Why not take a moment to remember why you help people in the first place? You deserve to slow down once in a while.

(You go see Meven.)

Meven
Welcome, (Character Name). I hope you are having a blessed day.

> Prompt: Duncan said you had a package.

Meven
Duncan sent you here for that? I told him it was nothing important. It can wait for someone with less important things to do...

> Prompt: I could use the break.

(Meven smiles.)

Meven
Keeping busy is the best thing for a troubled mind. And I am too old and too wise to turn down free help!
Sister Kristell is expecting it in Dunbarton. Just do us a favor, and leave the box closed. Sometimes ignorance is bliss.

> Prompt: Take the Package

(Meven's soft words fill the air as you turn away.)

Meven
O, Lymilark, please look after this battered soul...

(As you leave the church, you see a commotion in the Town Square. A robed person is shouting, gesticulating frantically as townspeople watch.)

Mad Seer
He will come! He will come to redeem us!
Salvation will be proven by mighty power. Open your eyes to the truth...
The chosen will be acknowledged as an Apostle and be blessed with tremendous power!

(Some people leave, uninterested in the madman's ramblings. )

(You deliver the parcel to Kristell.)

Kristell
Hello, (Character Name). It's been a while. How have you been?

> Prompt: Good, I brought you a package.

Kristell
This must be from Father Meven. Why do you have it?

> Prompt: (Tell her what Duncan told you.)

(Kristell studies you quietly, lost in thought.)

Kristell
Pardon my frankness, but I realized a long while back that my life was hollow and pointless without the people I cared for. That is why I do the best I can for those around me...

> Prompt: I know.

Kristell
It sounds trite when spoken, but it is what has fed my spirit in the absence of all else. Tending to your own spirit is the only way to care for those around you.

> Prompt: What do we do now?

Kristell
Shall we take a look at what Father Meven sent?

(Kristell pulls the box open.)

Kristell
Oh... my... this is not packed properly at all. I'm going to need to fix this for him. I'm sorry to ask it, (Character Name), but would you be willing to help me with an errand I was supposed to run?

> Prompt: Okay.

Kristell
I'll talk to you soon then. Thank you, as always!

Signs

Troubled hearts do not heal themselves. There is a young farmhand in need of guidance south of Dunbarton. Please talk with him. - Kristell

(You seek the farmhand south of Dunbarton.)

Farmhand
Huh? What brought you all the way here?

> Prompt: Kristell sent me.

Farmhand
Aww, what? I thought Kristell was coming herself! I wanted to show her my new sword skills.

> Prompt: Why are you learning the sword?

Farmhand
It's nothing. My pops is just worried about some dumb wolves he saw. I don't know why he's making such a big deal about it.

> Prompt: Do you need help?

Farmhand
Ah, I don't know. He said I just need to guard the farm for a little while. It just seems like a waste of a perfectly good day, you know?

> Prompt: What exactly do you need to do?

Farmhand
Uh, well... Um...

(He seems to be extremely flustered.)

Farmhand
Are you trying to get me in trouble with my pops? Why are you asking all these questions?

> Prompt: Just explain.

Farmhand
Well... there are these wolves and they're messing with our livestock. A lot more than usual, you know?
At first there were just a few more here and there, but then I started seeing these weird wolves lurking in the forests. It's a lot of work keeping them away!

> Prompt: That is a big deal.

Farmhand
Well don't freak out about it. Life is full of hardships, you know? You just have to deal with them and move on. That's what my pops always taught me.

> Prompt: Who is your father?

Farmhand
Huh? You don't know pops? Well let's just pretend you didn't hear that then. I don't need you messing things up with him!
Say, do you want to help me keep the farm safe? It's really boring to guard this place by myself all the time. I'll pay!

> Prompt: Okay.

Farmhand
Haha, you know, I think we might end up being pals. Just hang out here with me and take care of any wolves that show up. That's easy work, right?

> Prompt: Not Yet. or Guard the farm

> Prompt: Guard the farm (enter mission)
(You defeat the white dire wolves who were attacking the livestock, then the ancient dire wolf that came after.)

Farmhand
That was a lot scarier than I thought it would be. I don't know what I would have done if you hadn't been here.
I know I said I was going to pay you, but... this isn't really MY money. It belongs to my pops. But I swear I'll tell him all kinds of good things about you!
Hey, do you think I could be as good with a sword as you are at beating up monsters? I wonder if it's too late...

> Prompt: Maybe you can.

Farmhand
Haha, I like your straight talk. Pops would appreciate that. Next time I see you, I'll be working my tail off. I guarantee it!

Signed and Sealed

I heard everything went well. Can I ask you for one more favor? - Kristell

(You report back to Kristell.)

Kristell
You stopped the wolf? And with so little trouble? I'm glad you were able to keep everyone safe.
My only concern is how frequently these strange incidents have been happening. Animals with crystals jutting out of their skin, that weird diary...
I'm sorry, I'm just worrying aloud. Would you mind delivering this box to Cardinal Pencast in Tara? The box is for his eyes only, so please don't even try to peek.

(You go deliver the Properly Locked Box to Pencast in Tara.)

Pencast
Welcome, young Milletian. May the light of Lymilark be with you.

(You hand Pencast the sealed box.)

Pencast
Hmm? Why do you have this?

> Prompt: Kristell sent me.

Pencast
Oh... I see.

(Pencast opens the box and skims the document inside.)

Pencast
Pencast: As I suspected. Thank you for your help, (Character Name).
If I may be so bold, I've heard of your recent crisis of faith, and I may have some advice to offer.
Sometimes, when our lives become muddled, it is best to step back and remember the complexities we face are often of our own making.
Why don't you take a little time away? Appreciate the glory of nature, enjoy the blessings of Lymilark's great world, and reconnect with yourself.

> Prompt: Wise advice.

Pencast
Take care.

Curiosity Killed the Cat

I heard you're in Tara. I cannot believe you didn't even say hi! I had a favor to ask you. - Eirawen

(You answer Eirawen's summons and seek audience with her in the throne room.)

Eirawen
There you are! I was told you've been running around Tara and you don't even come to visit me until now?
You're supposed to be my loyal friend and I haven't seen you in ages. I'm working very hard at being a queen you know?

(Eirawen suddenly stops and studies you with a concerned look.)

Eirawen
What's wrong with you? You look down.

(You tell Eirawen about everything that's happened.)

Eirawen
It sounds like you've got a lot going on in you head. I think you just need to get back to work!
I want you to come to this castle and work for me. I will keep you so busy, you won't have time to be sad or tired or whatever it is you're feeling.

> Prompt: Please, no.

Eirawen
This is not a request, subject! I order you to work your tushy off until your face is happy again.

> Prompt: ...

Eirawen
You don't seem to be taking this seriously! You come closer so I don't have to shout!

(You step closer to Eirawen, and she dips into a soft whisper.)

Eirawen
Listen... This is classified information. Don't tell a soul.
Something is going on with the church of Lymilark and I need your help to find out what it is.
One of the high priests came to me in secret and swore me to secrecy. There's some big rumor going around about some kind of cult, and a lot of the church leaders are organizing their congregations.
I've had my spies look into it, but nobody knows what the church is planning. This could be really big.
I need to find out what they're plotting, but I have no power over the church. Do you see what I'm getting at?

(Eirawen suddenly pushes you away hard and shouts in a loud voice.)

Eirawen
I want you to look into this matter immediately, for the good of the realm. Do you understand?

> Prompt: O-okay.

Eirawen
That's "okay, your highness!" Now go. And keep your mission a secret.

(Eirawen waves you away.)

Upon exiting the Rath Royal Castle gates, you pass by a hooded knight. Noticing who you are, he turns around and removes his hood. Scratching his head, he musters the courage to greet you.

Mysterious Young Man
Umm...hello! Milletian!
Uh...um...so...I am...

(You are surprised as he shortly kneels on one knee, pleading.)

Mysterious Young Man
I've been watching you for a long, long time! Could you please give me your hand so that I could have a handshake and touch your hand with my... hand? Please don't run away, I'm a huge fan.

(Hearing this, you can't help but put on a vacant expression.)

(You speak to the knight.)

Altam
Wow! (Character Name)! I can't believe I finally get to meet you. My name is Altam.
I saw you enter the castle, so I stood here to see if you would show up again and-- WOW that sounds weird, doesn't it?
I-I was going to come inside to see if you were still there, but here you are! Oh, lucky me!

> Prompt: You know me?

Altam
Are you kidding?! You're the best Milletian that ever was! You're the guardian of Erinn!
If anybody in Erinn doesn't know the name (Character Name), they must have been hiding under a rock!
...
...

(Red rises in his cheeks with each passing second of silence.)

Altam
I... um, I'm sorry. I'm Altam, by the way. Oh, wait, I already did that part. I, uh, I've been training to become a great warrior, just like you. You're so great.
I've been following the tales of your great adventures for a long time, (Character Name). I really respect what you're doing.

(You look around for a way to leave without being impolite, but nothing presents itself.)

Altam
Are... are you busy? I bet you're off to save somebody in danger, huh? I'm sorry I delayed you! I'm so sorry!

> Prompt: N-no. Stop apologizing.

Altam
No, I'm sorry, I'm so sorry, I promise. I'll leave you alone. I know you're busy. So sorry!
I'll see you later again, I hope! Sorry!

(Altam runs off, leaving you be. You decide to go speak to Corentin to start your investigation.)

Corentin
Welcome to the Pontiff's Court. How may I help you?

(You ask about any cults, shady dealings, or super secret organizations the church might be involved in.)

Corentin
...What are you talking about? Where did you hear that?

> Prompt: Here and there.

Corentin
Enemies of the church are spreading lies to weaken our resolve. How could someone like you believe vicious words from the street? The followers of Lymilark have nothing to do with any cult, and I'll thank you not to continue the besmirching of our good name.

> Prompt: Okay. Sorry.

Corentin
May the light of Lymilark be with you, despite your brief moment of weakness.

(You decide to go speak with Pencast on the matter.)

Pencast
Welcome. (Character Name)! It's such a pleasure to see you so soon after our last encounter. May I offer you more guidance?

(Pencast's eyes harden when you ask about cults and secret organizations and possible connections to evil things.)

Pencast
(Character Name), listen carefully. Myself and my followers exist to spread the word of Lymilark. If agents of chaos seek to harm what He has created, we must act.
Some may consider us selfish, but we have no choice but to defy them. We must do everything we can in the name of peace.
We understand our place and our responsibilities, and if anyone were to abuse that power, it would be dealt with accordingly.
That is all I can say.

(Since this is likely all the information you can get, you report back to Eirawen.)

Eirawen
Why are you here already?

> Prompt: (Tell her what Pencast said.)

Eirawen
Pencast?! I told you to be secretive, not broadcast our intents to the corners of the world! You must not understand how important this is. People are moving behind my back.

> Prompt: ...

Eirawen
Who am I supposed to rely on now that you've abandoned me?
Go on. You'd better rest up before you betray me again. Come back when you've had a nice nap.

Light in the Face

People are very worried about the strange events in the last couple of days. It would be wise for you to have a word with them. - Duncan

(You heed Duncan's call.)

Duncan
(Character Name), you look refreshed, or at least a bit more determined. I hope I'm not bothering you.

> Prompt: Not at all.

Duncan
Good, because things have gotten strange since we last spoke. The rumors of odd beasts showing up in the south seem to have spread to our borders. Animals from deep within the forest are wandering into peoples' yards.
Deian tells me he saw something colossal. I thought it might have been a bear, but the boy is clever enough to know the difference...

> Prompt: Anything else?

Duncan
The day after you left, there was a bit of an incidence. It was just after sunset when I heard a scream. It was a terrible, piercing noise and it came with a flash of gold and blue light.
We've seen the skies light up before, but this has the entire town spooked. I only wish I had the words to calm them down. But perhaps your presence would do the trick...

> Prompt: Okay.

Duncan
Thank you, I mean it. I hope this is just the concern of a paranoid old man, but my gut tells me there is something else going on.

(You go talk to the residents.)

Nora
(Character Name)! It's been a while! What brings you here?

(Tell her what happened in the forests.)

Nora
Oh, wow. The old folks were talking about bad omens lately, but I didn't heed them any thought.

> Prompt: Glad to hear it.

Nora
I'm just excited about all the cool visitors we've had at the inn! They look like heroes out of a storybook! Kind of like Milletians...
One of them was really cute too, even thought he was getting in trouble with his commander.

> Prompt: I want to meet them.

Nora
Oh, well they're probably just standing right over by that building right now, but...
Oh no! That was supposed to be a secret!

(You follow Nora's accidental tip and find Altam.)

(The excitable young man from the castle in Tara seems to be moping about something.)

Altam
Oh! CharacterName! What are you doing here?

> Prompt: I was going to ask you the same thing.

Altam
Well, this is where a great legend was born. The legend known as (Character Name)!
It began with a call from a Goddess in need, and a daring rescue that required the heart of a great hero.

> Prompt: How do you know all that?

Altam
Oh... well...

(He seems to be searching for words.)

Altam
I've just... done my research.
I'm realizing right now that this all sounds pretty weird. I'm really sorry if this is awkward for you...

> Prompt: No problem. But why do you look sad?

Altam
I-I made a mistake in battle. I wasn't concentrating and one of my brothers was hurt.
The wound wasn't deadly, but I feel like I let him down. I let all of them down.
And the worst part is that I couldn't even complete the mission. My Captain had some very strong words for me when we returned...

> Prompt: You can make it up next time.

Altam
I just wish I could stop making so many mistakes all the time. Our work is too important. The task I'm on right now is--
Oh! Right!
I can't believe I didn't think of it before...
(Character Name), could you please help me? I don't have anything to give you in return, but I promise I'll make it up to you one day!

> Prompt: Okay.

Altam
The Captain is going to be so proud of me! Meet me in Sidhe Sneachta, okay? I'll get everything ready!

> Prompt: Get ready?

Altam
I'll see you there!

> Prompt: What kind of job is it?!

(Altam runs off again. You head over to Sidhe Sneachta.)

(As you step into the snowy forest, you see Altam speaking with an upset lady, who also has armor equipped.)

Mysterious Lady
You've risked too much. Have you forgotten our vows? You know the trouble this could get you into.

Altam
Captain Avelin, we don't have to reveal anything about ourselves. We can win this war if the Milletian fights at our side. We should at least try...

Avelin
The rules are not open to your interpretation, Altam. You know what the punishments are!

Altam
Y-you're right, but still...

(Avelin notices your presence. Altam turns around and waves, glad to see you.)

Altam
Oh, hey! Milletian! You came for me!

(In the background, you see Avelin shaking her head and throwing her arms up in frustration.)

Avelin
Altam! Did you already say everything?!

(You approach Altam and speak with him.)

Avelin
Altam, I can't allow you to do this.

Altam
Captain, please... I got (Character Name) to help us out! We can take down any monster now!

Avelin
I'm going to regret this...

> Prompt: Tell me about the monsters.

Altam
Huh?
...
Uh...
I don't know what I can say. We're hunting... Captain, can you help me here?

(The female knight shakes her head with a sigh.)

Avelin
Altam, remember your decorum. This is not a member of the knights you are speaking to.

Altam
I know, Captain, I was just thinking that maybe (Character Name) could help us catch, you know... HIM?

Avelin
I knew this was a mistake. How many times must I tell you to keep your thoughts to yourself? You say too much.

Altam
Sorry, Captain...

(The woman turns her steely gaze on you.)

Avelin
It is a pleasure to meet you, (Character Name). My name is Avelin and I am Altam's commanding officer.
I am sorry that you came all this way for nothing, but this is a job for myself and Altam. I bid you good day.

> Prompt: At least tell me about the monsters.

Avelin
...If I must.

(Avelin regards Altam with a humorless glare.)

Avelin
The only thing I can tell you is that there are no "monsters" to speak of. Nevertheless, your townsfolk should lock their doors...

> Prompt: I need to know more.

Avelin
I'm sorry, but I must speak to Altam.

(She turns to speak with Altam in a hushed voice.)

Another Light

Have you done some investigation? I am trying my best to stop other people who want to take a look around... - Duncan

(You speak to Duncan for an update.)

Duncan
(Character Name)! Lassar went to Sidhe Sneachta last night and has yet to return. I've told the girl it's not safe in that forest, even for magicians. Please go find her!

> Prompt: Okay.

(You see Lassar in the distance as your search brings you to north Sidhe Sneachta.)

(Lassar is unconscious on the ground. Thankfully, it's not a serious wound.)
(Everything's gone quiet...Too quiet!)

> Prompt: An enemy is nearby!

(Bright colors flash and a bright portal opens in the sky. Once again... a mysterious enemy has appeared. You prepare for battle.)

Shadow Mission : Annoying Enemy

(Avelin and Altam join you in the fight.)

(Avelin lands the finishing blow on the unknown monster with a summoned massive blade, banishing it.)

(Shortly after, a wolfman ambushes you and approaches the party.)

Wolfman
Your mastery of battle is impressive, just as I expected. I am pleased to see that your reputation is deserved.
This has been a good meeting. We shall see each other again...

(MISSION END)

Altam
(Character Name)! That was amazing!

> Prompt: What was that?

Altam
Uh... that was...

(Altam shoots a furtive look at Avelin.)

Avelin
I will answer your question, but you must understand that there are secrets I cannot tell you.
I will tell you that this monster was once human. The form you saw was twisted by energy from another world.

> Prompt: I did not sense any corruption.

Avelin
Any trace of the humans they once were has been burned out. All that remains is a puppet.
These people are being seduced by the promise of greatness, only to be made into agents of chaos...

> Prompt: Who was that wolfman?

Avelin
He is the beast responsible for creating these abominations. His name is Pennar, and he is an agent of a foul god. And he is not acting alone...
We believe there is someone controlling them, but that is all I can say...

> Prompt: Who are you people?

Avelin
We are the ones keeping this world safe. There's nothing more we can do here...

(Avelin's hand falls to her hip.)

Avelin
Speak a word of this to anyone, and I will silence you myself.
Come, Altam. We've spent too much time here.
(Character Name)... If you run into another one of these creatures, do not show it any mercy. It will certainly show you none.

Altam
Until next time, (Character Name)! Take care!

Avelin
Altam!

Altam
Y-Yes, Captain Avelin!

(The knights leave once more. You go report to Duncan about Lassar's safety.)

Duncan
Thank you for helping Lassar. Miss Dilys told me she would make a full recovery. Incidents like these are always a reminder to enjoy the time we have together.
You appear to have taken some time for yourself since we last spoke. I sense an air of purpose to you now. Perhaps this would be a good time to pursue a passion you've always dreamed of.

This Late Hour

Thank you for rescuing me. I heard you were with other people as well... Would you mind telling me more about them? - Lassar

(You go speak with Lassar.)

Lassar
T-thank you for saving my life.

> Prompt: What happened?

Lassar
I got into argument with Dilys about meteors and I was trying to prove my point. It was stupid, but she kept telling me they came from the GROUND.
I mean, what are they even teaching in Emain Macha? Meteors obviously come from the sky.

> Prompt: Were you attacked?

Lassar
Yes. And it was like nothing I'd ever seen. I've faced monsters that could reflect magic and monsters that could absorb the elements, but this was different. None of the spells I threw at it had any effect at all.

> Prompt: That is not what I saw.

Lassar
That's why I wanted to talk to you. I heard that someone else came to fight the monster with you. How did they manage to hurt it?

> Prompt: They used some weird blue magic.

Lassar
Interesting... could it have been ice magic? Or... Argh this is so confounding! I wish I could talk to the people who were fighting!

> Prompt: (Tell her about them.)

Lassar
Secrets upon secrets! If you see them again, tell them I would love to pick their brains. There's magic to be learned!

(You go back to the inn, in search for the knights's whereabouts.)

Piaras
It's been quite a while since I saw your face, (Character Name). What brings you to my humble inn today?

> Prompt: Have you met any knights?

Piaras
Many, but I guess you are referring to the lady and the young man with the ornate armor. They were a strange pair. I thought they might have been Milletians.
They stayed with us last night, but left before dawn. Nora was terribly disappointed, of course.

> Prompt: Where did they go?

Piaras
You know, I'm not usually one to pry into my customers' affairs, but the woman said something that stuck out to me when we were speaking over dinner. She said they were going to "follow the will of God, wherever it may lead." The other knight repeated it, as if it were a prayer. Not one I'd ever heard, though. I thought it was particularly strange that they were so well-armed. You don't see a lot of priests carrying swords these days.

(You report back to Lassar.)

(Lassar talks to you without looking up from her book.)

Lassar
So? Were they still there?

> Prompt: (Tell her what you learned.)

Lassar
Interesting... that phrase sounds familiar. I've got to do some research!

(Lassar skims over the pages of her book with intense eyes.)

After the Light

The investigations don't show much. This makes me even more curious. - Lassar

(You give Lassar some time to look into the matter, then go back to her.)

Lassar
Hi again, (Character Name). I think I found that saying you heard.

> Prompt: Where?

Lassar
Here, in an old record of the Aton Cimeni church. You probably don't know much about them. They just disappeared off the face of Erinn one day, but nobody knows why. I used to track down all sorts of conspiracy theories about it when I was younger...

> Prompt: You did?

Lassar
What?! That's a normal thing to do! I wasn't a conspiracy-obsessed weirdo for three years. You don't get to judge me!

(Lassar clears her throat and looks around.)

Lassar
Anyway, I didn't find anything else, so we're back to scratch. Your best bet to find them is probably through the church. Ancient gods and their followers seem like their sort of thing. Maybe Meven or Kristell would have some answers. Just let me know if you find anything. I'm dying to learn that magic.

(Following Lassar's advice, you go speak with Meven.)

Meven
Welcome, (Character Name). It's nice to see you again so soon.

> Prompt: (Ask about the two knights.)

Meven
I'm afraid I don't get out as much as I used to. Unless they paid a visit to the church, I wouldn't have seen them.

> Prompt: (Mention what they said to Piaras.)

Meven
Why, I haven't heard those words since I was a boy. That is a saying older than most of the books in my study, most commonly used as a farewell among true believers of the old faith.
These knights of yours must be quite pious. If you find them, please let me know. I would love to speak with them myself.

(You seek Kristell next, hoping to find some more information.)

Kristell
(Character Name)! I was hoping you would come by. I have another favor to ask you. It's about the farmhand you met last time. His dear father came to me simply worried sick. Do you think you could help him with his troublesome son?

(You go check up on the farmhand owner.)

Farm Owner
Are you (Character Name)? I'd been hoping to meet the person that put a fire in my son's belly!

> Prompt: What are you talking about?

Farm Owner
Do you remember the farmhand you helped? That's my boy! He's been a bit of a handful since he was little, getting into scraps and hanging out with the troublemakers in town. I'd had him working here to get some of his energy out, but then he saw you fighting those wolves. Now all he can talk about is becoming a knight.

> Prompt: Oh. Good?

Farm Owner
Haha! I'd say so! I've never seen the boy so interested in anything. Reminds me of the first time I laid eyes on freshly tilled earth. It was just me and my hoe back then. Couldn't ask for a better way to spend my days.

> Prompt: Glad that worked out.

Farm Owner
I'm sorry for gushing. Just nice to see the boy doing something with his life. I was actually hoping you could help me with something.

> Prompt: What is it?

Farm Owner
It's similar to last time. Some boars from Abb Neagh are getting into my turnips. I was thinking about putting up a notice for some hunters, but I was scared my boy would show up. I know he's excited and all, but I don't know that he's up to the task...

> Prompt: Okay.

Farm Owner
Stop back in when you're done and I'll pay you.

> Prompt: Go boar hunting (enter mission)

Shadow Mission : Unwanted Errand

(You hide behind scarecrows and secure the fields north of Dunbarton.)

(Mutated boars bearing yellow crystals appear. You defeat them all the same.)

(MISSION END)

Farm Owner
You gave those boars a good wallop! You're welcome here anytime. I don't suppose there's anything a lowly farmer could help you with, is there?

> Prompt: (Ask him about Altam and Avelin.)

Farm Owner
I wish I could help you, but I don't know anything about some magical holy knights. Sounds like something out of a storybook, if you ask me!
But I suppose seeing is believing. There's something weird going on these days, and those animals with the crystals on their backs are part of it.
I'm not sure I'm gonna be much help hunting down knights and monsters, but I'll do whatever you need. I owe you that much.

The Clue

Oh! I heard your story from my father too. It's similar to what my friends told me. - Farmhand

(You go to the Farmhand.)

Farmhand
Hey there! What are you snooping around about?
One of my bounty hunting buddies told me he saw something weird in Gairech... an ogre that talked like a human. Not only that, but it was talking about serving some god!
Everybody in town was lining up to capture that ogre. It was gonna be a big payday. I even made a bet I could get it, but I lost...
You should go talk to my buddy over by the Wanted Board. He'll tell you all about it.

(You seek the Farmhand's buddy.)

Bounty Hunter
Hahaha! Who're you, kid? Don't act like you know me.

> Prompt: The farmhand sent me.

Bounty Hunter
Farmhand? What do I look like, a grocery store? Get lost.

> Prompt: He said you were friends.

Bounty Hunter
A farmer? That knows me? What kinda...

(His eyes widen with realization.)

Bounty Hunter
The big boss?! What do you need? Anything! Just tell me!

> Prompt: Tell me about the ogre.

Bounty Hunter
O-o-okay! Somebody else caught it, so don't get your hopes up. Some crazy knight guys showed up with these big weapons and beat it up like it was nothing! They didn't even take the money or anything. Buncha idiots, if ya ask me. The church was handing out a big pile of gold...

> Prompt: The church offered the bounty?

Bounty Hunter
Isn't that crazy?! Where's the church getting all that money and how come they're gonna spend it on a talking ogre? It didn't even know no ogre jokes.

> Prompt: Who captured the ogre?

Bounty Hunter
Nobody knows. Some of the boys tried to join their team, but they ditched them like it was nothing.

> Prompt: I see.

Bounty Hunter
I helped a lot, huh? Make sure to tell the boss, okay? Tell him you couldn't live without me!

(You go back to Kristell.)

Kristell
How did it go, (Character Name)? The old man is very concerned about his son, but I heard that he had a big smile on his face after you left.
Your presence has more impact than you know. A simple errand can touch many lives. Do you understand? There are many who gain strength from your very presence...

> Prompt: Okay.

Kristell
Kristell: I'm sorry, I'm feeling rather wistful today. Do you need anything else?

> Prompt: Have you learned anything?

(Kristell hesitates and drops her head.)

Kristell
here isn't much I can say now. Just know that all will be revealed in time. There is an organization that operates in secret that would do anything to achieve their goals.
It would be best if you didn't try to approach them...

> Prompt: A secret organization?

Kristell
They are called the Alban Knights...
According to the histories, they were a powerful organization of holy warriors who vanished as quickly as they came. Rumors say that they have been in hiding, secretly pulling strings across Erinn for longer than anyone could imagine.
The knights themselves were said to wield the very will of Aton Cimeni in their heyday, but it's difficulty to tell where their legend ends and truth begins.
I've been told that they approached the leaders of the church in a manner accordant to the old laws. The priests of Lymilark have been in an uproar at the news of their return. Still, the church has decided to cooperate with them.
(Character Name), I would advise you not to approach them alone. There is no way to tell what these people really want, and they could be very dangerous.

> Prompt: I can handle myself.

Kristell
I don't doubt it, but... One of the priests sent word. When they first approached us, they said they were going to "eradicate any foreign creature who would dare sully this world."
I believe they were speaking of monsters, but... that could apply to you as well.

> Prompt: I will be careful.

Call of the Light

Hello Milletian. I know it's a long way, but would you mind stopping by Bangor? It's not absolutely important, but I would enjoy it. Please? - Comgan

(You go talk to Comgan.)

Comgan
Hello, (Character Name).

(Comgan tugs at his collar and whispers to you quietly.)

Comgan
There's a lady outside who really wanted to meet you. I don't know her at all, but she brought a letter from the head of the church.
I know you must be exhausted from your travels, but she told me to send you to her. She's waiting at the moon gate on the north side of town.
Please keep this whole meeting a secret. She was adamant about not telling anyone, but I'm no good at this sort of thing.

(You follow Comgan's instructions to find Avelin standing there.)

Avelin
Hello, (Character Name). I know that I told you that you wouldn't see us again, but I had to find you...

> Prompt: Why?

Avelin
I'm here to tell you to stop looking for us.
As you may have guessed, our organization operates in secret. Your investigations have turned up that much.
You will remember the young knight with me last time? Altam? Our superiors learned that he approached you for help...
And he has been accused of betrayal.
The mission we are carrying out will eventually require us to operate openly, but right know, lapses in protocol carry harsh punishment.
Soldiers like Altam do not deserve to be locked away for trying to help the cause, but the leadership has spoken. We are walking a thin line and brash actions cannot be tolerated.
I will return to you with Altam when my superiors allow us to reveal ourselves to the outside world. For his sake, I must ask you to respect our desire to be left alone until that time.

> Prompt: I understand.

(A snap of smooth laughter breaks the silence between you.)

???
Hahahaha!

Avelin
Oh no...

???
Look at the great Avelin, asking another stranger to clean up the messes she's made.

(The stranger reveals herself.)

Avelin
Brilluen?! Brilluen
Wow, you got the Milletian to help you?! Poor little knights. Me and the boys are just out of your league, aren't we?

Avelin
How did you know we were here?

(Rocks lift up from the ground around Brilluen.)

Brilluen
Oh, you know me. I like to know everything all the time. I even brought you a little gift!

(Another monster the likes of the one back in Sidhe Sneachta falls from the sky behind Brilluen, who performs a twirl to show off.)

Brilluen
Ta-da! This little fellow is much stronger than the last one you met. He's such a good little boy! Please show him a fun time!

Shadow Mission: Arrogant Enemy

> On-Screen text: The enemy is too powerful. Hold out a little longer!

(A minute passes with the combined effort of you and Avelin barely making a scratch on the creature.)

Avelin
We need to break down its defenses, as Altam did before.
I can't believe that sloppy fool got himself in trouble. We could actually use him right now...
There's no choice. We must leave. Take any chance you can to escape, (Character Name). I will do the same.

(A knight casually strolls beside Avelin. He crosses his arms briefly.)

Talvish
Hmmm...
Avelin? Did you just tell someone to flee from battle?

(Avelin turns around to face Talvish.)

Avelin
Talvish?

Talvish
You should take your own advice once in a while.

(Avelin glances back at the Girgashiy. Attention is brought to Brilluen, who is seen playfully waving hello from behind the Girgashiy.)

Avelin
We have no time for your quips, Talvish. Help us take care of this pest before the she-devil gets any further away.

(Talvish steps up and conjures an aura around the Girgashiy, whom Avelin weakens with her summoned blade.)

(The creature seems to have been stunned.)

Talvish
This fellow has some spirit!

(The battle continues. But this time, all damages inflicted upon the Girgashiy are effective. Eventually, the party is victorious.)

(MISSION END)

(You speak with the new knight.)

Talvish
Is this the great (Character Name) I've heard so much about? My name is Talvish. I am a member of the Alban Knights. It is an honor to meet such an accomplished hero.

Avelin
Why are you here, Talvish? Is there news of Altam?

Talvish
Patience, Avelin. Our superiors are taking every facet of his case into consideration. Trust in their judgment and let them take care of it.

(An innocent smile creeps onto Talvish's lips.)

Talvish
However, it wouldn't hurt to have a few friends at his side...

Avelin
What are you planning?

Talvish
There is no way for us to force them to see value an outsider could bring to our cause, however...
I suppose I should just stop beating around the bush. (Character Name), have you thought about joining the Alban Knights?

Avelin
W-what?

Talvish
It's only natural, Avelin.
What better way to clear Altam of his troubles than to show them that his trust was not misplaced? I have already said as much to the council...

> Prompt: You did?

Talvish
I believe that you could make a real difference, were you one of us. Our organization is locked in battle with a group of heretics that call themselves the Prophets. They are misguided creatures that worship a false God.
These heretics use a twisted divine magic to transform good people into monsters, like the one you saw. The only hope we have of stopping these abominations is to turn that power back on itself.

> Prompt: Divine power?

Talvish
I am limited in what I am allowed to tell you. During your recent tussle against the demigods, Iria was compromised.

> Prompt: How did you know?

Talvish
We know everything about you, (Character Name). Our superiors consider you to be a dangerous force, so it behooves us to keep track of your comings and goings.

> Prompt: Why?

Talvish
I'm not in the habit of sharing the secrets of our organization. In fact, I've told you more than I planned. Let's turn our attention to the doorway you allowed to be opened.

> Prompt: What doorway?

Talvish
The one that opened during your battle in the north. Now that it's open, any being could potentially wander in and out of our world. Actually, (Character Name)... It's quite similar to the Soul Stream.

> Prompt: And?

Talvish
This must seem like a trivial concern to you. Why worry about one open door when another already exists? But this door is different from all others. This is a doorway of the gods.
The moment that doorway opened, the another god entered our world. And now it is spreading its influence across Erinn.

> Prompt: A god from another world?

Talvish
You've already met its Apostles. You have seen what they can do. This god has the ability to turn people into monsters.
This is why we need your help. You can handle the power of a demigod.

> Prompt: ...

Talvish
This is all I can tell you for now. You must make your decision. Will you join us. If only for Altam's sake?
Or are you tired of saving the world? Hahaha.

> Prompt: I will join you.

Talvish
Great. I will let my superiors know. We'll speak again soon.

Alban

My superiors have given me permission to share more information with you. - Talvish

Talvish
It's good to see you again, (Character Name). My superiors tell me that Altam has been placed in a temporary unit with the younger knights. For now, you will remain with Avelin and I.
I've also gotten permission to give you more information. And trust me, there is much to share...
For instance, we are standing in one of our secret assembly areas. If anything bad should happen while we are in the field, return here. The other knights will find you.

> Prompt: Tell me about the Alban Knights.

Talvish
Our order was founded long ago, when Aton Cimeni spoke directly to a cleric and gave him orders to create an order of holy knights.
There were two commands in the cleric's great revelation. One is that our world must be allowed to mature without any outside influence or hindrance.
The other is that interlopers must be stopped at any cost. We were tasked with defending this world.
Sometimes that means taking battles against forces that we are not even remotely equipped to battle. As such, we have taken the impetus on ourselves to borrow the power of gods. We will turn this power against them.
This is precisely why we must remain in secret. The people of Erinn, especially the church, would misconstrue our actions as a danger to their safety. When, in fact, we are protecting them from a much greater threat. Do you understand?

> Prompt: That seems unnecessary.

Talvish
You see? Even you are unable to see that necessity of our approach. Our decision to give up our own freedom and lives to achieve a goal... That is an act of desperation.

> Prompt: Make me understand.

Talvish
I hope to. Simply follow myself and Avelin. You'll begin as any new recruit would. Though it might take a greater toll than you'd expect.

(You speak with Avelin for advice.)

Avelin
Can we talk some other time, (Character Name)? I have a lot on my mind.
I should never have let him go off on his own. He was under my protection and I failed him...

(You return to Talvish.)

Talvish
Hahaha. Avelin is always so hard on herself. There is no way to predict the outcome of every encounter. Sometimes things don't work out as you plan.
I'm sure Altam will understand when he sees you in his place. She doesn't need to concern herself with her subordinate's feelings.
Now then, if we could excuse ourselves from personal matters. I'd like to tell you about our primary directive as a team: to follow up on any rumors gathered by our intelligence unit.
Not terribly glamorous, eh? It's mostly talking with scared people, assuaging their fears. Rumors of invading gods and holy knights tend to spark the worst in people.
We do our best to keep our activities confined to the shadows, but dealing with a threat this large would be impossible to do without attracting some attention.
The Prophets have been very active lately. More and more people are volunteering to become Apostles.
Tracking them has not been difficult so far. You've dealt with the mutated animals that seem to appear whenever one of the large beasts appears. I am confident that tracking these Apostles will eventually lead us face to face with the Prophets.
Simple, eh?

> Prompt: What about the innocent people?

Talvish
With you along, I'm sure we can keep them safe. Besides, you won't be working alone. We operate in groups of three. With Altam on probation, Avelin will need a new third.

> Prompt: Wait, who is her second?

Talvish
For now, it's me. Her other squad member is away on emergency that I can't discuss right now. Good timing, I would say. It will give us a change to work together. In fact, this is the perfect mission for the two of you. Please gather any information you can from Emain Macha. Just try not to be as obvious as you were when you were working fr the queen.

> Prompt: How do you know about that?

Talvish
Because I am actually good at subterfuge. Now be on your way.

Chasing a Rumor

Much can be made from pieces of information. Wouldn't you agree? - Talvish

(You speak to Lucas in the Bean Rua pub.)

Lucas
(Character Name)? I'd heard you were in town. I also heard that you've been asking a lot of questions.
So, what brings you to my establishment? Are you looking for companionship? Were you hoping to sample my newest concoctions?
Or are you looking for something else?

> Prompt: Heard anything weird?

Lucas
Ah, an investigation then? I feel honored to be your confidante. Let's do this very professionally. We'll get to the bottom of this mystery.

> Prompt: Anything about mutated animals?

Lucas
That one has come up a few times, yes. A strange bit of magic, if you ask me. Someone has to be creating these things, so why is it they're just letting them roam free?
I'm sure you've heard that they appeared near Dunbarton? It's common knowledge at this point. But have you heard about Tailteann?
Many places have seen mutated boars and wolves. Just like the bears...

> Prompt: Why are you telling me?

Lucas
We both know you can't keep your nose out of other peoples' business. These beasts are affecting some very good friends of mine, and you're not the type to let the little guy suffer, are you?

(You report back to Talvish.)

Talvish
What have you learned?

(Tell him what you discussed with Lucas.)

Talvish
(Character Name), I understand why the young queen was so upset. You really need to learn how to be a bit more subtle in your operations. How can you trust information you've asked for directly? That sort of thing can land a person in trouble, you know? It's a miracle that no one has taken advantage of you yet. Or that you haven't noticed when they did...

> Prompt: You think I was tricked?

Talvish
I'm only telling you to be careful. People with great powers, like yourself, are often the target of ambitious enemies.

> Prompt: Okay.

Talvish
For now, we have the situation under control. All is well. This information will be helpful, regardless of the source. Dunbarton and Tailteann are both possible targets. I'd like to send you to Dunbarton first, then to Tailteann. Take note of anything strange you find.

(You follow Talvish's directions. You ask around without success, until you speak with Nerys.)

Nerys
Good to see you, (Character Name). It's been a while. What's keeping you busy these days?

> Prompt: Just the usual.

Nerys
Tell me about it. I could use a break!

> Prompt: Having problems?

Nerys
You're darn right, I am. I'm up to my eyeballs in broken weapons!
There's some new monster running around with skin tougher than iron, and I can't seem to convince my customers to stop beating their swords to death trying to take it down.
On top of that, I got a huge order from the city militia for more armor. I'm always happy to get more work, but this is too much for me to handle at once.

> Prompt: Are the guards worried?

Nerys
Somebody's got to be squirming in their britches about it, otherwise I wouldn't have this backlog. It's pretty scary to think about, actually.
If a bunch of vicious monsters show up that we can't stop, what are we supposed to do? Hide behind the city walls?
I guess it's a good thing we've got you, isn't it? I heard about what you did out on the farms not long back.

> Prompt: I will do my best.

Nerys
Good. We're all counting on you, (Character Name).

(You head to Taillteann next, looking for some more clues. You speak to Brenda by the clothing shop.)

Brenda
Hi there, (Character Name).

> Prompt: Good to see you, Brenda.

Brenda
I've heard rumors of strange monsters. I bet you've been off fighting them, haven't you?
I'm glad I live in Tailteann. It's the safest city in the kingdom! I only wish my customers felt the same way... Nobody seems to want fancy dresses anymore.

> Prompt: What do they want?

Brenda
Well, one guy had a really strange order. He wanted me to make a forest tapestry big enough to cover a house! Can you believe that? I ended up making it for him. It was actually kind of a fun project.

> Prompt: Who was it?

Brenda
I'm not sure, but he was a really big guy. I think he might have been a giant. How many fangs do giants usually have?

> Prompt: ...

Brenda
I hope it's nothing serious. It was a really neat project!

> Prompt: I am glad you had fun.

Brenda
It's been nice seeing you again!

(You head back to the Knight Assembly area.)

(You tell Talvish what you learned.)

Talvish
Ah. A quick study, are we? Let us piece together this puzzle of broken coincidence and see what narrative presents itself. This is my favorite part of the job! Let's see what we have here. Two mentions of strange orders. A giant with fangs... that could be Marcan or Pennar. And a forest near town... that would mean Abb Neagh or Corrib Valley. The armor and weapons were being bought in Dunbarton, but they could be going anywhere. There is something missing. Some vital piece of information. At least we've narrowed the search a bit. We should look into the area around Abb Neagh. I will meet you there once I've had time to prepare.

The Search

We must not let the enemy know we are following them. Let's look not where they are, but where we think they will be. - Talvish

(You head to Abb Neagh and meet up with Talvish south of the Bard Camp.)

Talvish
How unexpected... I was sure Corrib Valley would be our true destination. This was supposed to be a quick stop just to be thorough, but something here is off. I feel a trace of the Divine. Perhaps we are closer to our enemy than I thought...
Avelin would be able to lead us right to them. She is exceptional at tracking even the slightest hint of Divine magic. Sadly, it is not my forte...
No matter. I will look into this in her stead. You speak to the residents of the Bard Camp. If anything feels off, have them evacuate immediately.

(You try to speak to Hamelin.)

(Hamelin plays his flute with intense eyes.)

Cailean
Are you here to see Hamelin? I wouldn't count on getting his attention today. He told me he saw a miracle yesterday morning and he's been playing ever since.

> Prompt: A miracle?

Cailean
Yep! Not only that, but HE came up to ME. He's never done that before. It must have been something big. He told me he saw a golden light rise into the sky on the other side of the lake! Then he just started to play this melody over and over. It was pretty weird.

> Prompt: A golden light...

Cailean
Do you think he was telling the truth? I was up when he was, but I didn't see anything like that.

(You go tell Talvish about the new information.)

Talvish
A golden light rose into the sky? That is what happens when a new Apostle is born. The human host gives themselves completely, transforming into the creatures you've seen and becoming a puppet of the Prophet that created them. There is, indeed, an Apostle here and I believe its Prophet cannot be far away. Stay here. I will return with Avelin.

Chance and Necessity

I have a favor to ask. Could you please pay us a visit? - Yvona

(You meet with Yvona at the bard camp.)

Yvona
(Character Name), I was wondering. Have you noticed any strange boars around our camp? I swear, I saw a pack of them with the sort of gems you'd see on a necklace jutting from their backs. They would be beautiful, if they weren't so vicious. Do you think you could scare them away from the area east of camp? I heard that you're quite powerful.

> Prompt: Where did you hear that?

Yvona
So, it's true? I thought you looked like the fighting type. I'm sure Cailean will be very happy to hear that you're helping.

> Prompt: I will help. or Not now.

> Prompt: I will help. (Enter Misssion)

Shadow Mission: Incidental Inevitability

> On-screen message: Head east, where the crystal boars are spotted.

(You defeat the Quartz Crystal Boars that appear along the coast of Abb Neagh Lake.)

> On-screen message: Defeat the Crystal Boars!

(After slaying many crystal boars, Pennar appears!)

Pennar
Ha! I've been waiting for you! An opportunity to fight against a warrior of your skill is like a blessing to me....

(You best Pennar in one-on-one combat.)

Pennar
I am sorry to end this fated meeting so abruptly, but there is work to be done.

(Pennar flees.)

(MISSION END)

(You report back to Yvona.)

Yvona
I was watching you back there. You were amazing! I thought those boars had you for sure, but you fought them off so bravely.

> Prompt: They were very dangerous...

Yvona
Yet you handled them with ease. Thank you. I owe you one.

> Prompt: Just one?

Yvona
I'm not going to sell myself into your servitude just because you drove off a few grumpy, dolled-up pigs.

> Prompt: ...

Yvona
Don't look at me like that. Do you know how hard it is to make a living as a musician? You get one favor from me, and that's that.

> Prompt: Fine.

Yvona
See? That wasn't so hard. Let's just be happy for a fair and equitable trade.

Continued Battle

I was told you had an encounter with the wolfman. Prepare for battle and come to the place where you met Talvish earlier. - Avelin

(You reconvene with the two knights.)

Avelin
(Character Name). Give me an update.

(Avelin's face darkens as you tell her about your encounter with Pennar and the boars.)

Avelin
Something here is not right. Pennar would never flee from a battle, not permanently. He must be planning something else.

Talvish
If Pennar is here, we can be sure that one of his Apostles will not be far. We could wait until it makes an appearance, then strike them both down.

Avelin
I think it would be best to move the inhabitants of the camp to a safe location first, then form a plan to return. There is no one else in the area to endanger.

Talvish
A simple enough plan, until it costs us our quarry. If we waste our time moving these people and Pennar attacks the town they flee to, what good will we have done? It would be best to stay here and root out the infestation.

Avelin
Fine. We will do this your way.

Talvish
Please come talk to me when you are ready for battle.

(You speak with Talvish after preparing.)

Talvish
You look ready. A good thing at that. We have little time.
The wide open area should make the search easy enough... Of course, that means we're very likely to lose the element of surprise. We'll need to be extra vigilant.

> Prompt: Look for Pennar. or Not yet.

> Look for Pennar. (Enter Mission)

Shadow Mission: The Wolf and the Man

(You begin your search with the two knights.)

(Avelin mutters to herself.)

Avelin
Those people could get hurt if we fight here, but I see no other options. I'm going to wring his neck if he's wrong about this plan...

(You run along with Talvish, Avelin not walking too far behind.)

Talvish
You're sure he was here? I feel nothing. Avelin?

Avelin
This is the right place, but I feel something strange.

Talvish
He can't have gotten far. Keep your eyes open.

Avelin
This could be a trap. We should head back and secure the camp. There's no reason to endanger ourselves, Talvish.

Talvish
We still have the upper hand. Besides, we have (Character Name) with us.

Avelin

Avelin
If it weren't for (Character Name)...
...
I sense something and I don't think it's the wolfman. Get ready for battle.

(It was a trap.)

(The knights and Milletian recruit make quick work of the crystal boars and wolves.)

Talvish
Pennar must have seen us approaching. Maybe we should leave for now and try to draw him out.

Avelin
We cannot just abandon this camp to a pack of monsters. He knows we're coming. Are you certain you want to charge headlong into his trap?
If you had listened to me before, we wouldn't be in this situation. We have no choice now. The tracks lead west. We need to follow.

Talvish
As you wish...

(Talvish shoots you an awkward little smile.)

Talvish
(Character Name), will you join myself and the brave Captain Avelin in a bit of a hunt?

Avelin
We have a responsibility to protect these people, Talvish. This is no more my decision than it is yours.

(The three of you charge headlong into Pennar's trap.)

(More mutated animals appear.)

(The second trap also served no problem.)

Avelin
We should have evacuated the area...

Talvish
Let's not start casting dispersions just yet, Avelin. I'm sure this plan will succeed.

(MISSION END)

(Talvish speaks up.)

Talvish
Something is close. Wouldn't you agree?

Avelin
If I see anything, Talvish, you'll be the first to know.

Talvish
I always appreciate your candor, Avelin. Shall we look around, (Character Name?)

> Prompt: Look around. or Not yet.

> Look around. (Enter Mission)

Shadow Mission: Things with Wings

(Heavy footsteps rumble through the ground around you.)

Avelin
More of them. Stay alert!

(Mutated animals appear.)

(The mutated animals are slain.)

Talvish
What are your recommendations? Do we spring his trap?

Avelin
There's a break in the hills here. Could he... could he have been fleeing this whole time?

Talvish
Haha, it appears you overestimated our opponent, Avelin. This is no trap. It's an escape route, and not a good one.

(You head off with Talvish and Avelin to investigate.)

> On-screen text: Pennar appeared! Chase him!

(Pennar is seen in the distance.)

Talvish
Finally, we come face to face. You're Pennar, yes? I've heard you're clever. If that's true, you'll know there's no escape. Turn yourself over.

Pennar
I know your kind.

Talvish
What?

Pennar
You attempt to enrage my ego or reinforce my fears with words that would seem like wisdom.

Talvish
...

Pennar
I do not rely on mind games to win my battles and I will not engage you in yours.

Avelin
Then face me.

Pennar
I would be a fool to rob Brilluen of her fun and games. My business is with the golden-haired snake.

Avelin
Coward.

Pennar
Were our situations different, I would cut your throat where you stand. But today is not that day. Take this gift from my masters instead...

(A Girgashiy appears surrounded by mutated animals. It charges straight at you!)

(The Girgashiy repeatedly confines you in a spike of crystal or in its grasp. As the battle drags on, your wounds worsen.)

Pennar
That should have been enough...

Avelin
You will not escape this battle!

Pennar
This was never a battle. We will have our time, and when we do, I will revel in your defeat as the life drains from your pretty eyes.

Avelin
...Accursed wretch!

(Avelin frantically searches the area.)

Avelin
West! He went west! Go after him, (Character Name)! Talvish and I will clean up here.

Talvish
Catch him, (Character Name). He'll be nigh impossible to find if he gets away. Go!

(You chase after Pennar.)

Pennar
I told you that I would prefer an honest duel, but I must obey my orders.
You are a great warrior, (Character Name). What I am about to do brings me no honor.

(Brilluen and an ogre appear from behind a nearby stone.)

Brilluen
I was wondering when you were going to stop yapping, wolfie.

Marcan
Don't kill. We take. We bind. We break the spirit.

Pennar
Just like our masters want...

(The three step forward. In response to this threat, you transform into demigod mode. But a strange shield appears and Brilluen counters with a magic that forcibly expels some dark energy from inside you. You lose consciousness after a hit from Marcan.)

(MISSION END)

(You have been taken back south of the bard camp. Talvish and Avelin are nearby.)

Talvish
(Character Name)? Are you all right?

> Prompt: Good enough.

Talvish
It is unfortunate that we were not fast enough... I feel a Divine contamination within you. It might be best to avoid using your powers for a bit.

> Prompt: But I feel okay.

Talvish
I know this will be difficult for you. What these villains have done could destroy you in the end. The Prophets are seeking to break us from within.
They have continually evaded our assaults and corrupted our knights with their heretic's magic, cracking the armor of their spirits, and pressuring them until the crack becomes a gaping wound.

What may feel like a small injury now will grow in power until it breaks you apart from the inside.
Using your full powers now will only further their cause. You may get lucky and die in peace, but it is quite possible you would transform into an Apostle yourself. All that would remain would be a puppet.

> Prompt: Is there a cure?

Talvish
Intense prayer and meditation, but it requires training. There is a place, however... I would have to get permission for you to enter, but it might work.

Avelin
Do you think command would allow it, Talvish? I am so sorry for this burden, (Character Name). I should have been there.

Talvish
I will make sure you get the help you need. Once you have stabilized the damage, you can begin to regain your skills. We will get you back to normal.

Avelin
That's easier said than done. It's going to be a long road and anything could happen...

Talvish
There's no use worrying over it now. I will speak with our superiors and get the permission we need. Let's at least celebrate the fact that we saved this camp.

Avelin
You're right...

Talvish
Avelin, today is the last day of Altam's probation, is it not? Shall we go get him?

Avelin
That would be a relief. Altam has a knack for following my orders without question.

Talvish
Hahaha, your reputation as a stern taskmaster is not unwarranted, is it, Captain Avelin?

Avelin
Someone has to take up the mantle, Talvish. Now, I need you to ensure the people in camp are safe. After that, you can go back to tell command what's happened to (Character Name).

Talvish
Of course. Whatever you say, Captain.

(Avelin turns to you.)

Avelin
Your orders are as follows... Return to the Healer's House right away. Take rest at the inn.
Is that clear? It's no business of mine if you get hurt running errands for the townsfolk. But if you are not completely healed, you will not be joining us.
A group of three is no good if one of its members is injured. I know that well from personal experience, and I won't have it happen on my watch ever again. You're both dismissed.

> Prompt: Okay.

Talvish
Safe travels to you both.

Lofty Goal

There's an emergency! We need your help now. Please come to the Royal Castle as soon as you can. - Eirawen

(You answer Eirawen's summons.)

Eirawen
(Character Name), where have you been?! Everything is going wrong! There are enemies in the capital!
Our soldiers are completely useless against them. And now I'm hearing about strange knights coming to battle these creatures.
I can't trust all these weirdos to do our work! You have to do it. Go out there and save my soldiers right now.

> Prompt: I am busy.

Eirawen
I'm not asking for a favor, subject! I need your help!

> Prompt: I was wounded...

Eirawen
UGH! Can you at least find me someone who can help?
People are dying! This is no time to start babbling excuses. If you aren't willing to help when people are actually in need, how can you call yourself a hero?

> ...

> ...

> Prompt: Fine. I can help...

Eirawen
Who is going to help?

> Prompt: I will fight them myself.

Eirawen
I thought you were wounded!

> Prompt: It has to be this way.

Eirawen
Hey! (Character Name)! Hey!

Shadow Mission: Shattered Trust

(The soldiers are battling a pack of bears.)

Tara Watchman
How much longer can we hold this position?

Tara Watchman
We need reinforcements! We're all going to die here!

Tara Watchman
Look! Look over there! A Milletian is here!

Tara Watchman
Are you sure?

Tara Watchman
It's true! It's a real Milletian!

(The air is filled with Tara watchmen pleading for their lives as they witness their comrades falling one by one— their attacks not even scratching the crystal bears.)

(Altam and Avelin appeared!)

Altam
(Character Name)! Are you okay? We came as soon as we could.

Avelin
You were supposed to get rest, yet here I find you driving yourself into the ground?! Why won't you listen to me?

Altam
Captain, considering the situation--

Avelin
The situation is under control, Altam. The problem here is that no one is obeying orders! (Character Name) is no good to us without any powers!

Altam
C-Captain? There are lots of ears around here.

Tara Watchman
W-what? (Character Name)? You lost your powers?

Tara Watchman
That would explain why you couldn't even fight a bear...

Tara Watchman
God bless us, we are all going to die!

Avelin
...I'm sorry, (Character Name). Let's get out of here.

> Prompt: What about them?

(Avelin lets out a sardonic sigh.)

Avelin
Another squad will take care of them. If you believe in us, let's go over there and talk.

(MISSION END)

Altam
(Character Name)! Are you all right? Don't be too down on yourself, okay? I've gotten in trouble a bunch of times for being too hard on myself.
It's easy for your friends to get hurt if you're busy worrying about yourself...

Avelin
Save that story for another time, Altam.

Altam
Yes, Captain...

Avelin
I am sorry that I underestimated you, (Character Name). The tales of your exploits painted you as a glory-monger reveling in your eternal life. I am glad that you do not live up to that reputation.

Altam
S-seriously?! That's mean, even for you, Captain!

Avelin
I wouldn't even know who (Character Name) was, were it not for a constant PRATTLE in my ear, Altam.
"Oh, I want to be like (Character Name)! (Character Name) is so amazing!"
With all your failures, how could I possibly think highly of this mysterious character?

Altam
Wh-what?! When did I say that?! I mean, maybe one or two times...

Avelin
We've wasted enough time here. I've received permission to enter the training site I mentioned earlier. We are set to enter the Cave of Remorse, located in the center of Corrib Valley. (Character Name), meet us there when you are prepared.

Altam
See you there, (Character Name)!

(You meet with the knights in a remote part of Corrib Valley.)

Altam
Hi, (Character Name)! It's this way! Follow me.

(Altam speaks to you in a hushed whisper.)

Altam
It's going to be scary in there. Everything inside is just an illusion, but it's the kind that will scare you to the core...
Every memory you have will flash through your mind, until you get to the one you fear the most.
You just have to remember it was in the past. You have to move forward and let it all go.
But I know you're not like me, (Character Name). You're so strong, you won't have any problems at all.

> Prompt: I hope so...

Altam
Is there really something that scares you?

> Prompt: Yes.

Altam
...
I'm sure you're going to be fine. I just know it! You can take this path up. Just come back in one piece, okay?

> Prompt: Okay. (Enter mission)

RP Shadow Mission

(You are brought to the entrance of the cave. Scattered all over the ground are various glittering items. You walk over to these spots and gather them.)

(You grab something on the ground.)

Tarlach's Locket.png
This accessory contains the portrait of a blond boy with glasses and an elegant woman with a smile. It belongs to Tarlach now, as a reminder of the choices he made.

Pendant of the Goddess.png

Anti-Fomor Cloth.png
Cloth made from the evil powers of the Fomors. It's very tough, but nothing can offer complete protection.

Chain of Protection.png
Chain made from woven mythril. It can be used to make protection charms to shield peoples' hearts and will.

Fossil of Dark Knight Armor.png
A piece of armor that lost all of its magical power. The Dark Knights that wore this were not evil. They simply wanted to protect the things they cared about.

Note.png
Atrata asked that you deliver this letter to Taunes. What feelings brought them together?

Shadow Walker's Pass.png
A pass to the Shadow Realm that is covered in Elatha's symbols. Why did Elatha make the choices he did?

Neamhain's Talisman.png
This talisman represents Neamhain, the Goddess of Light. What might be in the hearts of those who carry this?

Book.png

Book.png

Coupon - Gold.png
A bag exchange coupon received from Eirawen. Now, why did you help Eirawen back then?

Black-Tailed Mongoose's Black Tail.png
Akule needs this tail from a Big Beautiful Black-Tailed Mongoose. Is it right to protect those you love by keeping the truth from them?

(You enter the dark cave. Fear overcomes you. Everywhere you anxiously look, nothing is seen but black. Suddenly, you see apparitions from your past, one by one.)

Tarlach
Caring about worldly things caused me nothing but pain. I longed for the restful peace of Sidhe Sneachta...
But then you moved my heart and gave me the courage to take action again...

Rian
In the end...What were you able to protect?

Ruairi
Why continue, when only despair awaits us in the end?
But you showed me that anything can be overcome. I wanted to be like you...

(You hold your head, writhing in pain.)

Elatha
Humans took alchemy from the Fomors and used it against each other. What could they do with the power of a demigod?

Shylock
With power like that, you could make a better world!

(It is too much to handle.)

Eirawen
We never would have made it this far without you. I can't thank you enough.

Eavan & Aodhan
I want to thank you for coming to this world.

(The ground you stand on begins to glow blue.)

Duncan
The moment I saw you, I knew you would be a great hero. The spark in your eyes...

Nao
What do you want to do in this world?

(Suddenly, everything seems so clear. You feel reinvigorated. You exit the cave and head back to Altam.)

(MISSION END)

Altam
That was quick! The Shield of Trust protected those around us.
(Character Name), I think I know what you're afraid of. You know, the powers we use are all about turning our fears outward.
No matter how strong you are, even if you're immortal, you can't always stop the people around you from being hurt.

Avelin
None of us are perfect. Even our greatest leaders can show themselves to be incompetent and unwise...

Altam
But... I want to be better. I want to make a difference. It's the only way I can ever forgive myself.

Avelin
Altam, haven't we spoken about this enough? Mistakes happen. You cannot go on flogging yourself forever.

Altam
...

(Avelin studies Altam with impassive eyes.)

Avelin
You are no good to me like this. Let's focus on the mission, shall we?
I've tracked the enemy to Taillteann. We must move quickly to stop them.

> Prompt: Okay.

Avelin
Meet us outside the city walls, on the northwestern border. And be quick.

Realization

If you're ready, it's time we struck back at these villains. - Avelin

Avelin
Are you feeling any better?

> Prompt: As good as can be expected.

Avelin
Then we shouldn't waste any more time here. Eliminate this target, then we can move to the next.

> Prompt: Attack The Apostle. (Enter Mission)

Shadow Mission: What It Means To Protect

(The battleground is south of the Taillteann graveyard.)

(A huge Apostle looms over you. It appears to be a new kind of Girgashiy. One with wings.)

Altam
Over there! I-it has wings.

Avelin
Is this the complete version they've been talking about?
We need to see what it can do! Everyone be careful!

Altam
(Character Name)! Let's do this!

(The Girgashiy begins flapping its wings!)

Altam
Eyes up! It's doing something!

Avelin
Heavy attack incoming! Block it with your Shield of Trust!

(You quickly follow Avelin's order.)

Avelin
We can crack his defense if we block this attack! Altam! Get ready!

(The Girgashiy readies its spear and you protect the entire party with Shield of Trust from its mineral hail. Everyone loses footing, but get back up easy enough.)

Avelin
Avelin: I'm sorry that I doubted you, (Character Name). You are truly one of us. All together now. We will destroy this abomination!

(Avelin casts Shield of Trust, followed by Altam. You stand back up, ready to finish off the weakened Girgashiy.)

(This winged Girgashiy has new attacks, but you manage to defeat it alongside your brothers-in-arms.)

(MISSION END)

Avelin
The enemy is far more powerful than I expected. If there had been more of them, we would not be talking right now.

Altam
Haha. I'm not worried! We've got (Character Name)!

Avelin
Altam! That is no way to speak. Blind trust is the catalyst of ruin. If you place all of your hopes on one person, they are sure to let you down.

Altam
I guess you're right, Captain.

Avelin
Both of you take some rest for now. Our victory will have left them scrambling. They will have to safe us directly now.
Pennar, Marcan, and... Brilluen.

(Avelin has a murderous look in her eyes.)

Avelin
I will reach out to you when it is time.

Decisive Battle

We have a lead on the Prophets. Meet me as soon as you can. - Avelin

(You meet Avelin in Morva Aisle.)

Avelin
Welcome, (Character Name). This is it. We were tracking them across the center of the continent, when all the while they were hiding in the south...
But there is no escape from here. If they want to leave, they will have to go through us.
The other squads will circle around and flank them. We will form the vanguard.

> Prompt: Follow Avelin. (Enter mission)

Shadow Mission: Do or Die

Avelin
More enemies will be here soon. Stick to our original plan and fight as long as you can stand. We must destroy the Girgashiy.

Altam
Enemy approaching! (Character Name)! Get ready!

(After an arduous battle, the Girgashiy falls and the three villains come out.)

Altam
All out of lackies, huh? Tell us what you're scheming!

Brilluen
I don't have to explain myself to nosy children.

Avelin
Explain yourself to me, Brilluen, if you think it will help.

Brilluen
Sweet Avelin, always one step behind. Just like the last time...

Avelin
You! Don't you ever talk about that! I'll kill you where you stand!

Brilluen
Hahahaha! Are we still holding a grudge about THAT? You are unbearably adorable.

(The knights and prophets prepare for battle.)

Avelin
There will be no more running, Brilluen!

Altam
Careful. This might be a trap.

Brilluen
Gee. Do you think?

Pennar
But I wouldn't call this a trap.

Brilluen
Why are you always ruining my fun?

Pennar
There is no trickery here. They have flocked to their fates like birds to feed.

Brilluen
Hahaha! You're so poetic today, Pennar!

Avelin
Choose your words carefully, witch. They will be your last.

Brilluen
Sorry darling, that's not part of my plans.

Marcan
Brilluen. You talk too much.

Pennar
Marcan is right. This banter only cheapens our battle.

Brilluen
You boys are so boring.

(In defeat, Pennar, Brilluen, and Marcan flee from the battle. Talvish appears.)

Brilluen
Hahaha! Thank you very much for coming all the way here. But we have places to be!

Avelin
You're not going anywhere, Brilluen!

Marcan
Stop talking, Brilluen.

Avelin
What are you trying to pull?!

Brilluen
Aww, can I give the stupid knights just a little hint? Pleeeease?

Pennar
A minor loss can be the key to a great victory in the larger game.

Brilluen
That was a little over my head.

Pennar
We can give up a knight or a bishop, so long as we take the king and queen!

Talvish
Queen... They're going after the Royal Castle?!

Avelin
No! They can't possibly have the forces to do that!

Talvish
How can we know that?

Avelin
We have to tell the others. We need the full might of the knights behind us.

Talvish
We need to take a moment to think.

(MISSION END)

Talvish
I'm not certain what they are saying is true, but I don't think we will be able to continue the chase.

> Prompt: I will go to the Royal Castle.

Talvish
Would you? That would be lovely. We will continue the hunt while you are away.

Altam
Are you crazy? Nobody can handle the Girgashiy alone! Even (Character Name)! It's too risky! We should regroup until we know what's going on.

Talvish
One of us could handle a Girgashiy, if that one of us had access to all of our powers at once. I have transferred powers before, and (Character Name) is no ordinary human...

Altam
You can't be serious.

Talvish
Desperate times, my young friend. What do you think, Avelin?

Avelin
I... I don't know. Have you ever transferred two powers at once before? How do we know it won't--

Talvish
I believe (Character Name) will survive. The transfer itself should not be any more difficult than usual. In theory.

Avelin
It's the only way...

Altam
I can't believe we're doing this, but I trust you both.

Talvish
(Character Name), each of the knights has a little trick up their sleeves that you may not know about. My own is the ability to absorb and redirect divine power. I am the only knight able to manipulate energy in this way.
I am going to give you the powers that Altam and Avelin have mastered. It will leave them weakened, but they will recover.
It will take you some time to get used to the new abilities, but I'm sure you'll get a handle on it.
Do not fear. You alone can do this.

Answers from Above

You must hurry. If our young sovereign meets her maker, the kingdom will fall into utter chaos. I believe in you. - Talvish

(You hurry to Rath Royal Castle.)

Tara Watchman
You're late, (Character Name)! The castle has been flooded with monsters. The queen is missing! You must find her.

> Prompt: (Enter Castle.) (Enter Mission)

Shadow Mission: Under Siege

(You join the Tara guardsmen in fighting off the crystalline monsters. First wave down.)

(More enemies are further up the path. Get past them!)

(In the middle of the second wave, a Girgashiy appears! Thankfully, it appears to be in its infancy, lacking any adornments. You easily dispatched it with a single Judgment Blade.)

(More enemies are further up the path. Get into the royal castle!)

(You walk up to a lone soldier trying to fend off the monsters, his comrades all fallen around him.)

> On-screen text: The soldier is in danger! Don't let him die!

(You fend the monsters off and rescue the Soldier.)

(You come close to the entrance to the Royal Castle, two Girgashiys standing tall above a pile of dead soldiers. You dispatch them with another Judgment Blade.)

(MISSION END)

(A Royal Castle soldier with a high pitched voice stands on duty. You can see his glistening eyes under his heavy helmet. You speak with him.)

Royal Castle Guard
There are all kinds of monsters inside! Some of them were huge! I thought I was done for when--
L-look over there! What is that heading towards the garden?!

> Prompt: Rescue Eirawen. (Enter Mission)

Shadow Mission: Gods save the Queen

(You rush to the hanging garden.)

> On-screen text: You made it to Eirawen. Keep her safe!

Eirawen
What are you doing here?! I thought you used up all of your power!

(Ancient crystalline monsters appear, slowly making their way towards the queen. You prevented all of them from reaching her, though.)

Eirawen
Who... Who is that?

(A black wizard with the fomorian emblem draped over the face is seen standing at the edge of the hanging gardens.)

Black Wizard
He has granted all that you desire.

(Two black-robed people are standing below the wizard, clutching their heads in agony.)

Black Wizard
Now you must grant His desire. Give yourself to our god and He will grant your greatest wishes.

(A blinding white flash occurs and the two are instantaneously transformed into full-fledged Girgashiy. Both run forward at the ready.)

Eirawen
I-I can't believe it. T-those monsters were human?!

Royal Guard Captain
We have to get you out of here. Let the Milletian take over!

(Eirawen shakes her head, stomping her foot on the ground.)

Eirawen
...No! Not anymore!

Royal Guard Captain
M-my queen...

Eirawen
I stood up for what was right once before...
We can't expect (Character Name) to just fix every problem we encounter. This fight is ours.

Royal Guard Captain
Please, my grace! There is nothing we can do here. We must get you to safety!

(While they speak, you battle the Girgashiys, one of them striking you down.)

Royal Guard Captain
Come, the underground pathways will be safe! We can still get out of here!

(Eirawen steps forward.)

Eirawen
I won't leave! I will see the end with my own eyes!

Royal Guard Captain
Please, my queen. This is a fight between gods! Humans have no place here.

Eirawen
If (Character Name) is a god, then we're lucky enough to have a god on our side. Everyone stay where you are! We will not abandon our allies in their time of need!

(With the current battles, you've mastered the use of the divine energy, and the power received from the two knights can be wielded freely. This is fortunate, given the current opposition.)
(The three knights would normally take some time with one Girgashiy, but your current ability allows you to fell these winged apostles singlehandedly.)

Seeing the two Girgashiys fall, the Black Wizard casts a spell that instantly knocks out Eirawen and her bodyguards. You manage to resist it.

Black Wizard
Impressive... you withstood the sloppy attempt to meld your power with that of our supreme being. You are lucky.

(You begin running forward, only to be knocked back by the black wizard. The temporary holy strength you gained from earlier fades away...)

Black Wizard
Still, power without a leash has a way of biting its owner...

(You get back up. The black wizard begins to emit an aura.)

Black Wizard
When that power finds its way, the world will face a rebirth of its own.

The black wizard disappears.

(MISSION END)

(With the enemies dispatched, you check up on Eirawen in the throne room.)

Eirawen
Thank you... Thank you so much, (Character Name). I didn't think you'd come...
I wished you would, but I didn't think it would happen.
I kept screaming for you in my head. And then you were here... like a hero in the legends.
I won't question you ever again. I believe in you. Wherever you are, whatever you say, whatever you do...
I believe in you.
...
Thank you so much...

Not Over Yet

I heard you defeated the enemies at the castle! You are more incredible than I imagined! - Altam

(You meet with Altam in the Knight Assembly Area in Emain.)

Altam
(Character Name)! Have you heard all the rumors about us? People are saying we can take on any monster.
They say we're wiping out hundreds of enemies with a single swing of the blade and surrounding ourselves with impenetrable energy.
But I haven't heard anything about ME. I guess nobody really noticed me...
Oh well. I guess once we're rested up, it'll be back to fighting. Maybe somebody will notice me then.
I just wish we'd manage to stop the Prophets. As long as they're out there, the Apostles will keep coming.
I've got to get back to the captain for now. We can talk some more next time, okay?
I'll be practicing for the next time we meet, (Character Name)!
I'll be the best knight you've ever seen!

(You check on Avelin.)

Avelin
Everything is calm enough for now. Altam will need some time to recover, but he should be fine soon enough.
I wish I could say the same. We are expecting a new recruit soon, and I feel like I've been put through the wringer. I've heard nothing but bad things about this one too. Worse than Altam, even.
I always mange to get stuck with the problem children...
Oh well. I must be going, (Character Name). You have been a great help to our cause. Stay safe until we meet again.

Talvish
Yes, (Character Name). Do you feel okay?
I've never transferred the abilities of two people at once... I was very concerned with the burst of power. It was unexpected, as you can imagine.
Yet...

(Talvish's voice falls to a whisper.)

Talvish
Talvish: You held the power of a demigod for a long time, and you did not seem afraid to wield it. The powers themselves may disappear eventually, but your body will never forget. In the end, you may be able to use all of our abilities freely.

> Prompt: Is that a problem?

Talvish
Haha. No, it's not a problem. The members of our knighthood usually only get one skill. Each of them trains endlessly to master their one tool.
You, on the other hand, will have to work to master all three. There was a great explosion when you took on these abilities. It's highly likely that you obtained a special power.
Just remember how you felt when you controlled that force. If you can control your feelings, you can defeat your enemies and protect those around you.
I've told you that this was the Knight Assembly Area, right? The markings on the wall will react to anyone with divine power and lead you directly to the Apostles.
As you train and your teamwork deepens, your power will grow and grow.
I think I've said everything that I had to say.
I will see you later.
Welcome, new blade of the heavens!
Grant us the trust to help us through tough times.

Altam
Grant us the willpower to avoid the wrong path!

Avelin
...Do I really have to do this?

(Altam and Talvish laugh and look at Avelin.)

Avelin
Grant us the determination to forge ever onward!

(The Alban Knights Emblem now responds to you.)
