has biological vector
[edit]Originally proposed at Wikidata:Property proposal/Natural science
Description | The biological group (often a taxon) which works as a vector for this pathogenic biological group . See Wilson et al 2017 (PMC5352812) for different valid perspectives on the concept of vector. |
---|---|
Represents | vector (Q107994) |
Data type | Item |
Example 1 | Zika virus (Q202864) → Aedes aegypti (Q1148004) |
Example 2 | yellow fever virus (Q836749) → Aedes aegypti (Q1148004) |
Example 3 | Dengue virus (Q476209) → Aedes aegypti (Q1148004) |
Example 4 | Plasmodium (Q130948) → Anopheles (Q158597) |
Planned use | Connect manually pathogens and their vectors. Create structure for future integration with databases (e.g. VEuPathDB: the eukaryotic pathogen, vector and host bioinformatics resource center (Q112066091) |
See also | host (P2975), disease transmission process (P1060), natural reservoir of (P1606), has natural reservoir (P1605) |
Motivation
[edit]While similar properties are available, there is no clear way to represent pathogen-vector relations on Wikidata.
The pathogen-vector relation is important for understanding all types of diseases, property would make the process of documenting the relation quite straightforward.
Although there are multiple definitions of a vector (see What is a vector? (Q30252972) for multiple perspectives), there is some degree of consensus and the concept is widely used.

Support if this does not exist I thought I saw this proposed or created since COVID, but I might be misremembering. It obviously needs to exist. The current description says that a vector needs to be a taxon, but I provided an example otherwise with the necktie example. Objects can be a vector for disease transmission also. Bluerasberry (talk) 17:10, 19 May 2022 (UTC)
Good point. If a necktie can be considered a vector or not depends on the definition, but I agree that it is the case under some definitions. I guess the description should be taken with a grain of salt in this case, but feel free to word it better. TiagoLubiana (talk) 21:12, 19 May 2022 (UTC)
- I'd recommend making the label more specific, to indicate that the use would be for the biological sense of the word. --Yair rand (talk) 21:04, 23 May 2022 (UTC)
- Done! TiagoLubiana (talk) 13:38, 26 May 2022 (UTC)
- Comment Notified participants of WikiProject Microbiology Notified participants of WikiProject Zika Corpus @Bluerasberry: I've triple checked and there is no property for vectors yet on Wikidata. The equivalent on the Relations Ontology is https://www.ebi.ac.uk/ols/ontologies/ro/properties?iri=http://purl.obolibrary.org/obo/RO_0002460 . TiagoLubiana (talk) 18:50, 20 September 2022 (UTC)

- Support and I wouldn't encourage using specific things like necktie as object in the example. The general term for objects as vector is fomite (Q3075150). --SCIdude (talk)

@TiagoLubiana, Bluerasberry, SCIdude, ChristianKl: Done as has biological vector (P11231) but I kept the narrow (taxonomic) definition of a vector according to the voices in the discussion. Please don't use for neckties etc.Vojtěch Dostál (talk) 18:41, 30 November 2022 (UTC)
