Rubens painting

[edit]

I've removed a long section about a Rubens painting (and image) that has only the most tenuous connection with Petrockstowe. Maybe a brief mention that the painting was once saved from a local fire would be appropriate, but to include a description of it, and the biblical reference on which it is supposedly based, and Swete's description of its provenance and his early morning contemplation of it, and the details of another unrelated painting of the Lord Chancellor, and the correction of the reported details of that painting ... is far too much of a digression from the topic of the article.  —SMALLJIM  20:22, 9 July 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Unfortunately virtually nothing is recorded about this house, "one of the most imposing ever to exist in Devon" (Lauder). One of the rare sources is Swete, and he chose to write at length about the episode of the Reubens painting. Beggars cannot be choosers. It thus becomes valuable info. Anyway, as I stated I will move the whole block to a new article Heanton Satchville, Petrockstowe. (Lobsterthermidor (talk) 20:53, 2 August 2012 (UTC))[reply]

The Medieval Cult of St Petroc

[edit]

Would someone please help me understand what this from Karen Jankulak's The Medieval Cult of St Petroc means:

"According to the earliest existing episcopal register (as of 2000 book), Buckfast abbey possessed the advowson of the churches of both South Brent and Petrockstowe; dissolution records show both temporalia and spiritualia of the abbey in these parishes."

That would be great!--CaroleHenson (talk) 23:57, 27 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Episcop, advowson, Dissolution of the Monasteries, temporalities and spiritualities. Do those help?  —SMALLJIM  10:03, 28 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks, I couldn't find "temporalia" and "spiritualia"
So, if I've got this right: The abbey was supported by tithes and income-producing property (temporalia and spiritulia).
The lord of the manor has the right to nominate the parish priest.
Is that right?--CaroleHenson (talk) 12:19, 28 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]
I think so. Bishop Bronescombe's and Bishop Quivil's registers state that the Abbey held the right to nominate the priests in those parishes, and at the Dissolution, records show that it was supported by tithes and income from land and property that it owned in those parishes (and no doubt others too).  —SMALLJIM  15:21, 28 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Excellent, thank you!--CaroleHenson (talk) 15:34, 28 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]
