5 states accents

[edit]

could someone list the accents of the 5 states depicted on the episode? —Preceding unsigned comment added by 200.150.167.234 (talk) 07:10, 17 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]

the "Oh!" that the New Jersey cops say is a reference to something also, but I can't remember exactly what. who can ? perhaps it's Andrew Dice Clay ?

uniforms

[edit]

and what about the uniforms? can someone identify them ? or they are generic? —Preceding unsigned comment added by 200.150.167.234 (talk) 08:03, 17 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]

The silent police force looks like the California Highway Patrol to me. YLee (talk) 08:07, 17 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Grammar and writing style

[edit]

Switches of East Face

[edit]

What does that refer to? Chief Wiggum says it when arresting Sideshow Bob, is it some kind of reference to the censored Southpark Episode (East Face somehow Mohammed, switches like the fact, that Mohammed was not actually shown in the episode?). Well, maybe not, but what is it then? --Kricket (talk) 21:32, 17 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Could be, but would need a source before its addition. CTJF83 chat 03:43, 18 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Not South Park; it refers to The Witches of Eastwick (novel by John Updike, later a movie and TV series). Mathew5000 (talk) 06:50, 19 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Voice of Walt Warren

[edit]

At simpsons.wikia.com it says that David Cross voices Walt Warren but I have some doubt; Cross is not named in the credits of the episode. The voice is kind of a Jimmy Stewart parody; I would have guessed Hank Azaria. Mathew5000 (talk) 18:49, 19 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Absolutely don't rely on Simpsons wikia, it's, in my opinion, a crap hole site. As for who actually voiced him, I have no idea. CTJF83 chat 19:05, 19 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]
OK. Firstly, do not call us a crap hole site. Every wiki makes mistakes and as there is no definite source and this is the first time it has been brought to my attention, I am looking into it. I have had a brief look and can't find a source for David Cross so it is a disputed thing. I'm sorry but every wiki makes mistakes, especially Wikipedia, and we are also prone to them. Solar Dragon (talk) 20:41, 7 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]
To be fair, someone added that David Cross bit here as well. -- Scorpion0422 22:10, 7 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]

After looking into it, I have only found one source that states his voice actor. It is apparently Kelsey Grammer as well. Source is TV Rage however, I guess it is unreliable due to being on Wikipedia's blacklist of spam as it will not allow me to post it. Solar Dragon (talk) 21:01, 7 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]

OK. After looking into it, the user who put it up has admitted that he can't remember where he saw the name and as I can't find a source saying that David Cross voiced him, I have removed it entirely. Solar Dragon (talk) 05:14, 8 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]
It couldn't have been Kelsey Grammer doing the voice of Walt Warren. That would make no sense. (Of course it was Grammer at the beginning of the episode, when the character of Walt Warren was first introduced, because that wasn't the real Walt Warren but Sideshow Bob pretending to be Walt Warren.) I still would guess it was Hank Azaria voicing the real Walt Warren. —Mathew5000 (talk) 02:46, 12 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Does "windup gag" exist?

[edit]

Briguy52748 inserted the phrase "windup gag" in this article a while back. Where does this phrase come from? When searching for "windup gag" or "wind-up gag" I have only been able to find four relevant examples anywhere:

  1. The Slick Chick, which Briguy52748 created.
  2. One mention in a 1981 book on the Warner Bros. cartoon shorts. I am not familiar with the short in question so do not know whether the book uses the phrase in the way Briguy52748 does.
  3. A blog on cartoons.
  4. One Usenet message.

(For all I know the same person wrote 1, 3, 4, and even 2.)

That's it. The few other uses of the phrase I can find a) deal with a magic trick of some kind, b) discuss wind-up toys, or c) are taken from this article. It does not appear in Merriam-Webster, either. In any case, even if it turns out to be some well-established bit of slang among cartoon fans, we should be careful about using it in a Wikipedia article without the usual criteria of reliable sources verifying the phrase's existence and defintion.YLee (talk) 22:04, 12 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]

After leaving a message at Briguy52748's Talk page with no response, I have deleted the "windup gag" phrase. It was not necessary for the summary, anyway. YLee (talk) 17:43, 25 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]
After reading the text, I believed that the phrase windup-gag refers to the last event of the show. The phrase probably derives from the vaudeville era, meaning to conclude a performance.--Auric (talk) 01:01, 11 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]
The meaning is clear from the context. My question was whether this phrase was something Briguy created on his own. He never responded to my request on his Talk page for information. Ylee (talk) 07:27, 15 August 2011 (UTC)[reply]

GA review (see here for criteria)

  1. It is reasonably well written.
    a (prose): b (MoS):
    • The sentence ""The Bob Next Door" is the twenty-second episode of The Simpsons' twenty-first season and the 463rd episode overall on Fox Broadcasting Company." needs to be reworded.
    • The sentence "However, Bart is convinced that Walt is his archenemy, Sideshow Bob in disguise, because, rather worryingly, they have the same voice." is very choppy and needs to be reworded.
    • There are several other long and choppy sentences throughout the article that should also be reworded.
      • Could you give me instances if there are still some? I hope I removed them all.
  2. It is factually accurate and verifiable.
a (references): b (citations to reliable sources): c (OR):
    • The episode makes no clear proof that Texas, Minnesota, California and New Jersey are the other four states.
      • Removed.
    • Citation needed for "Bob mentions a spoiler moment in the Harry Potter series, which annoys Bart, as he has not reached that book yet, even though, as Bob says, the book was four years old at the time of this episode's broadcast."
      • Removed.
  3. It is broad in its coverage.
    a (major aspects): b (focused):
    • Can a little more detail be added to the lead, specifically about the plot? Also mention what date the episode aired in the lead.
      • More about the plot and the the air date added.
    • Is there a reason why the episode didn't air on January 14?
      • None of which I know.
  4. It follows the neutral point of view policy.
    Fair representation without bias:
  5. It is stable.
    No edit wars, etc.:
  6. It is illustrated by images, where possible and appropriate.
a (images are tagged and non-free images have fair use rationales): b (appropriate use with suitable captions):
  7. Overall:
    Pass/Fail:

I will put the article on hold for fixes to be made. Dough4872 01:14, 29 February 2012 (UTC)[reply]
