Policy on Kartographer-based maps

[edit]

The end goal for maps throughout Wikipedia, especially in the Roads projects, should be to replace all image-based maps with Kartographer maps, sourced from OSM's External Data whenever possible, and using data stored on Commons otherwise. Kartographer is superior to bitmap in almost every way, making zooming into maps and looking at surroundings easy, and making updating easy as changing a couple numbers in a text file. That being said, my policy now is to use OSM's data whenever possible. As OSM expands and attracts more users, people will put in more Wikidata tags anyways onto features, and the data will eventually be imported into Wikimedia's servers. So why not do it all now? In addition, it's a better idea to use OSM over other sources in order to keep less data on Wikimedia's servers. When this isn't applicable, put data on Commons and NOT on Wikipedia. The documentation for raw Wikipedia data doesn't exist anymore, it'll probably be completely removed in a few years, so let's not flog a dead horse. Finally, where data is redundant, delete it, not only for keeping data on servers not higher than it has to be, but also to reduce confusion as to which source to use.
