MOS thread on per cent
[edit]I've just noticed your Aspergers/autism user boxes. With respect, I think you are misreading the sense of the thread. Do you think Aspergers/autism might impact your ability to judge it? I strongly recommend you pause your mass edits until a clearer consensus emerges. DeCausa (talk) 12:06, 18 August 2023 (UTC)
- I believe it does strongly affect my drive toward following it through to conclusion. But I am absolutely certain that in an encyclopaedic/formal literature context "per cent" is most definitely to be preferred. While it is admittedly a difficult task given the lack of an English Academy, one can still draw conclusions from august and respected sources. I have not been able to find any sources which do explicitly say "percent" is acceptable, only instances of use. 𝔖𝔱𝔬𝔩𝔦𝔱𝔷 (talk) 12:16, 18 August 2023 (UTC)
- And you won't find such a source, because as you say, there is no "English Academy". See also the Oxford comma, and use of 'z' versus 's'... and then read WP:RETAIN. BastunĖġáḍβáś₮ŭŃ! 12:19, 18 August 2023 (UTC)
- One could stretch that position out to dismiss absolutely anything and say "color" and "windshield" are also acceptable. What I meant by sources was things such as style manuals; no BrE style manual I have found says "percent" is acceptable. 𝔖𝔱𝔬𝔩𝔦𝔱𝔷 (talk) 12:22, 18 August 2023 (UTC)
- And yet people have pointed out on this talk page that it's in common use and in dictionaries, such as, e.g., the OED. But you've deleted that. Can you just stop this until a consensus - an actual consensus - emerges on the MOS page?! BastunĖġáḍβáś₮ŭŃ! 12:25, 18 August 2023 (UTC)
- Stolitz, you need to stop before you get taken to ANI. You registered this account only 6 days ago and have made 2,200+ of these changes in that time. It's becoming disruptive in light of the lack of support for it at the MOS thread. DeCausa (talk) 12:28, 18 August 2023 (UTC)
- Please don't dogpile me.
- The mention of the OED is interesting; the OED lists "per cent" and "percent" as different words, and lists their commonality as "300 per 1 million words" and "1 per 2.5 million words" respectively. 𝔖𝔱𝔬𝔩𝔦𝔱𝔷 (talk) 12:34, 18 August 2023 (UTC)
- "Dogpile" you? Seriously? In Hiberno-English - cop on! It's two editors, raising legitimate concerns. Many more editors, experienced ones at that, have said to slow down, pause, wait until the debate that you started reaches a conclusion, but you're ploughing on regardless. You've gotten good advice above on the MOS page - I'd suggest listening. BastunĖġáḍβáś₮ŭŃ! 12:42, 18 August 2023 (UTC)
- I have not made any relevant edits since this thread was started. 𝔖𝔱𝔬𝔩𝔦𝔱𝔷 (talk) 12:45, 18 August 2023 (UTC)

Your upcoming draft 1.1
[edit]Re your example:
- "The project was estimated at 100 million lev, but went overbudget by 20 million lev.
- "The project was estimated at 100,000,000 BGN, but went overbudget by 20,000,000 BGN
Clearly the first is better, so much so that it comes across a straw man! So two points to consider in your draft:
- Guidance to address this point (name rather than code or abbreviation) should be in the name section, it is not a currency symbol issue.
- It is always better to advise people what they should do than to tell them what they should not.
By the way, I'm surprised that you find the TLA currency codes unfamiliar, anybody who has needed to buy currency for a foreign holiday must have seen them.
I hope you find this useful. 𝕁𝕄𝔽 (talk) 15:05, 22 August 2023 (UTC)
- Thank you for your response.
- I had thought that as I was trying to construct advice about where to and where not to use symbols/codes then the symbol section was appropriate. I am not sure how to format my request so that it slots into the "names" section instead of the "symbols" section.
- Some currency codes are more equal than others: there aren't going to be many people familiar with all of them; one might be vaguely aware that the currency of, say, Cambodia, is the riel, but I do not consider it likely that they will be immediately familiar with "KHR" or "៛". I am not in favour of proscribing them in all circumstances, just in prose text. 𝔖𝔱𝔬𝔩𝔦𝔱𝔷 (talk) 15:40, 22 August 2023 (UTC)

Request reason:
I have been accused of being a sockpuppet of this person before and was cleared of suspicion. Please check my IP address and such.
Decline reason:
Similar behavioral tells + CU data is reasonably close to past TCG socks. Declined. GeneralNotability (talk) 01:00, 23 August 2023 (UTC)
If you want to make any further unblock requests, please read the guide to appealing blocks first, then use the {{unblock}} template again. If you make too many unconvincing or disruptive unblock requests, you may be prevented from editing this page until your block has expired. Do not remove this unblock review while you are blocked.

- Are people just going to keep accusing me of being this person until it sticks? Surely this is double jeopardy. 𝔖𝔱𝔬𝔩𝔦𝔱𝔷 (talk) 00:34, 23 August 2023 (UTC)
- I need to sleep, but I hope this will be reversed. I probably don't even use the same ISP as this other person. Pinging Bbb23 and Yamla. 𝔖𝔱𝔬𝔩𝔦𝔱𝔷 (talk) 00:52, 23 August 2023 (UTC)
I am extremely disappointed by this decision. I live in a large city with millions of internet users so there will obviously be many banned users. How can I prove my innocence? 𝔖𝔱𝔬𝔩𝔦𝔱𝔷 (talk) 07:10, 23 August 2023 (UTC)
- I did wonder if you were the same person: I'm not convinced that you are TCG (I think I know his "fist" by now) but I'm not entirely convinced that you are not he either. It doesn't help that you have taken the same well-worn paths as his and appear to have rather more familiarity with how to use Wikipedia than the average newbie. If you are indeed an innocent bystander caught in the cross-fire, the specific part of the Guide that you need to read now is WP:SOCKBLOCK. Best wishes. --𝕁𝕄𝔽 (talk) 10:51, 23 August 2023 (UTC)
- I have sent an Unblock Ticket Request. 𝔖𝔱𝔬𝔩𝔦𝔱𝔷 (talk) 11:25, 23 August 2023 (UTC)
Based on the request at UTRS appeal #77751, I took another look. With the new data in the logs, I'd have to say this is now between Possible and Possilikely (a mix between possible and likely). The technical data is, frankly, unlikely to result in anything clearer than this. Note that the block is based on a combination of technical data and behavioural matches and I agree, the behavioural evidence matches. I'll be declining the UTRS request as UTRS is not the appropriate forum here; unblock requests should be made on this talk page. I'm sorry I did not have better news. --Yamla (talk) 15:21, 23 August 2023 (UTC)
- I understand, would it be possible for me to let this lie for a few weeks or months and appeal again? I doubt filing another unblock request here so soon will be looked upon favourably. I am sure I can find something else to lose myself in to pass the time. I do hope my suggestions will at least offer a perspective for others. 𝔖𝔱𝔬𝔩𝔦𝔱𝔷 (talk) 16:50, 23 August 2023 (UTC)
- I have to say that I am not surprised by the decision, because the behavioural evidence is really rather strong. If you do come back, I strongly advise that you stay away from anything to do with currencies (broadly construed), MOS changes, campaigns to enforce WP:ENVAR (like "per cent"/"percent"), indeed anything even vaguely nationalistic or territorial. WP:SOCKBLOCK advises months, not weeks. --𝕁𝕄𝔽 (talk) 12:51, 24 August 2023 (UTC)
