Ancient Greek
[edit]Etymology
[edit]Maybe from Proto-Indo-European *h₂welh₁- (“hair, wool”), like Latin vellus (“fleece”), or from the same root of Ancient Greek εὔληρα (eúlēra, “rein”), Latin lōrum (“thong”) and Old Armenian լար (lar, “rope”). Beekes finds both these proposals unconvincing.
Pronunciation
[edit]- (5th BCE Attic) IPA(key): /lɔ̂ː.ma/
- (1st CE Egyptian) IPA(key): /ˈlo.ma/
- (4th CE Koine) IPA(key): /ˈlo.ma/
- (10th CE Byzantine) IPA(key): /ˈlo.ma/
- (15th CE Constantinopolitan) IPA(key): /ˈlo.ma/
