[edit]From за (za) and лес (les, “forest”). The original sense referred to the forests around the Principality of Vladimir-Suzdal, a predecessor of the Tsardom of Moscow and modern Russia.
Sense 2 refers to Russia's forests and Moscow's position from Ukraine in the perspective of a Ukrainian.[1] [2]
