Russian
[edit]Etymology
[edit]Inherited from Old East Slavic годьныи (godĭnyi), from Proto-Slavic *godьnъ, from Proto-Indo-European *gʰedʰ- (“to unite, be associated, suit”). Cognate with English good.
Pronunciation
[edit]Adjective
[edit]го́дный • (gódnyj) (comparative (по)годне́е or (по)годне́й, superlative (наи)годне́йший)
- fit, suitable, well-suited, good for, valid, appropriate [with для (dlja, + genitive) or к (k, + dative) or на (na, + accusative) ‘for/to something’]
- (slang) nice, legit
Usage notes
[edit]The short form should not be conflated with the adjective го́ден (góden, “fit for consumption”), which has lexicalized as a short-form-only adjective in its own right.
