From Proto-Mordvinic *kijə, from Proto-Uralic *ke + *-gä. Cognates include кие (kije), Finnish ken, Estonian kes,[1] Northern Sami gii, Eastern Mari кӧ (), Komi-Zyrian кин (kin), Udmurt кин (kin), Hungarian ki.[2]
