Etymology

[edit]

From the root *բուրդ- (*burd-, to cut) of բրդեմ (brdem, to cut to pieces), from Proto-Indo-European *bʰōrdʰ-; see the former for more.[1] The word originally had a broader meaning “something cut out, extracted”. Compare the Georgian borrowing ბურდო (burdo, chaff), which preserves the o-stem of Armenian, as well as its older meaning. For the semantic development compare կտուրք (kturkʻ, fleece) from կտրեմ (ktrem, to cut).
