[edit]Etymology
[edit]From the root *բուրդ- (*burd-, “to cut”) of բրդեմ (brdem, “to cut to pieces”), from Proto-Indo-European *bʰōrdʰ-; see the former for more.[1] The word originally had a broader meaning “something cut out, extracted”. Compare the Georgian borrowing ბურდო (burdo, “chaff”), which preserves the o-stem of Armenian, as well as its older meaning. For the semantic development compare կտուրք (kturkʻ, “fleece”) from կտրեմ (ktrem, “to cut”).
