Etymology

Inherited from Proto-Turkic *k(i)adɨš (leather belt), a development of *k(i)adɨ- (to sew together).[1] Cognate with Azerbaijani qayış, Bashkir ҡайыш (qayış), Kazakh қайыс (qaiys), Kyrgyz кайыш (kayış), Southern Altai кайыш (kayïš), Uzbek qayish and Yakut хатыс (qatıs).

  1. strap, thong, a long, narrow, pliable strip or flap of leather, or the like

  3. (figuratively) pilfering, petty theft, a theft of property having a lower value
