Etymology
[edit]Of uncertain origin. Burrow derives the word from Proto-Indo-European *welH- (“to turn, wind, round”), comparing to Ancient Greek ἕλῐξ (hélix, “spiral”). Other theories connect the word to वल् (val, “to turn round”) and/or वृत् (vṛt, “to turn, rotate”).
