Etymology
[edit]If the original sense was "of the morning," possibly from Proto-Indo-Iranian *wāsarás, a vṛddhi derivative of *wásr̥ (“spring”). If so, related to वसन्त (vasanta, “spring”).[1][2]
Gamkrelidze et al. instead prefer a derivation from Proto-Indo-European *h₂wes- (“to stay, dwell, spend the night”), also the source of वसति (vasati, “staying, dwelling”).[3]
