From Proto-Southwestern Tai *ɟanꟲ⁴ (layer). Cognate with Northern Thai ᨩᩢ᩠᩶ᨶ, Lao ຊັ້ນ (san), ᦋᧃᧉ (tsan²) or ᦶᦋᧃᧉ (tsaen²), Shan ၸၼ်ႉ (tsâ̰n), Ahom 𑜋𑜃𑜫 (chan).
