[edit]From Proto-Southwestern Tai *ʰmajᴬ (“thread”), from Proto-Tai *ʰmajᴬ (“thread”), from Old Chinese 徽 (OC *hmɯl, “fine; glorious”).[1] Cognate with Lao ໄໝ (mai), Tai Dam ꪼꪢ, Lü ᦺᦖ (ṁay), Shan မႆ (mǎi).
