From Proto-Sino-Tibetan *mriŋ (“sound; noise; animal cry”); cognate with Chinese 鳴 (OC *mreŋ, “to make a sound”), 鈴 (OC *reːŋ, “bell”), 笙 (OC *sreŋ) (STEDT).
