From Proto-Sino-Tibetan *ʔaːw (to shout, cry out). Cognate with Burmese အော် (au, to shout, berate), as well as with the following Sinitic words (STEDT):

  • (OC *qʰoːʔ, *qʰos, “to breathe on, yawn, roar”)
  • (OC *qʰaːl, *qʰaːls, “to shout, cry out”)
