Etymology

First attested as nuweboxwoude around 1312. Compound of Middle Dutch nieu (new), either Bok (a personal name) or bux (common box, Buxus sempervirens) and wout (marsh forest, swamp forest). The toponym formerly contrasted with Oudeboxwoude (currently called Hauwert).
