[edit]From Proto-Indo-European *leyzd- (“edge; seam; band”), from Proto-Indo-European *leys- (“track; groove; furrow”) (see also *laistaz); or perhaps from Proto-Indo-European *leytstā-, related to Latin lītus (“shore; coast”).[1]
