[edit]Etymology
[edit]From Proto-Balto-Slavic *murˀg-, *mirˀg-, from Proto-Indo-European *mr̥gʷ- or *mr̥Hgʷ-, from the root *mergʷ- or *merHgʷ-. Cognate with Lithuanian mirgė́ti (“to twinkle”) (3sg. mìrga), Latvian mir̂dzêt (“to twinkle”), Old Norse myrkr (“dark”) (acc. myrkvan).
