Usually assumed to be connected with Proto-Slavic *tъrgъ, Lithuanian tur̃gus, Latvian tirgus, Swedish torg (market, marketplace). Ultimately, from a Balkan substrate, compare Romanian târg (market), Albanian tregtar (merchant).
