First part from various Norwegian dialectal words; avbendes, avbendeleg, avbendelege (hard to reach, backwards, detachable, unwieldy, overweight). Last part -lig (-le, -ly) from Old Norse -ligr (-y, -ly, -like), from Proto-Germanic *-līkaz (-like, -ly), from *līką (body; corpse, dead body), from Proto-Indo-European *leyg- (similar, like; image, likeness).
