[edit]From Middle Low German anmōden (“to ask for”), composed of an (“on”) + mōden (“to want, ask for”), compare German anmuten (“to appear”). The latter part, which is also found in the verb vormōden (“to suppose”) (Danish formode) is derived from the noun mōt (“mood, mind”) (Danish mod).
