Borrowed from Latin būbalus, from Ancient Greek βούβᾰλος (boúbalos, antelope, wild ox). Compare Spanish búbalo, Italian bufalo, French buffle, German Büffel, Polish bawół, Russian бу́йвол (bújvol), as well as Irish buabhall, Modern Greek βουβάλι (vouváli), Romanian bivol, Latvian bifelis.
