Perhaps from Proto-Indo-European *gʷlew-, extension from Proto-Indo-European *gʷel- (throat)[1] (whence gula (throat)). Cognate with ingluviēs (crop of birds), Russian глотка (glotka, throat) and Persian گلو (throat).
