Finnish
[edit]Etymology
[edit]From Proto-Finnic *kumpu, probably from Proto-Finno-Permic *kumpe (“hillock, tussock”), whence also Erzya кумбо (kumbo, “hummock”), Moksha комба (komba, “hump”) and Proto-Samic *kompë. Contains a -u suffix which is not seen in the earlier derivation kumpare. The Finnic root has also been compared with Proto-Germanic *humpaz (whence English hump), possibly hinting that it is borrowed from Germanic instead.
