  1. Lack of money: poverty.
    Synonyms: pennilessness; impoverishment, penury; brokeness; see also Thesaurus:poverty
  2. A (real or hypothetical) state in which economic activity happens without money as the medium of exchange.
    Some versions of utopian communism envisioned true moneylessness; others envisioned money and prices but under centrally planned control.
