[edit]From Latin quadrāgēnārius (“containing 40”), either directly or via French quadragénaire, from Latin quadrāgēnus (“40 each”) + -ārius (“-ary”), from quadrāgintā (“four tens, forty”). Cognate with quadragenarian, quadragenary, and quadragene.
