[edit]From Proto-Tocharian [Term?], from (possibly) Proto-Indo-European *seh₂li-h₁en-, from Proto-Indo-European *séh₂l-i- (“salt”) + *h₁én (“in”). Compare Tocharian A sāle. Other cognates include Sanskrit सलिल (salila), Latin sāl, Old Armenian աղ (ał), Ancient Greek ἅλς (háls), and Old English sealt (English salt).
