Etymology

[edit]

Originally meant "salted herring". Probably borrowed from Swedish sillake, from sill (herring) + lake (brine) (compare saltlake), referring to the brine herrings were salted with. The word may have influenced by salakka, another word for a fish, in both form and meaning.

Pronunciation

[edit]
  • IPA(key): /ˈsilɑkːɑ/, [ˈs̠ilɑ̝kːɑ̝]
  • Rhymes: -ilɑkːɑ
  • Syllabification(key): si‧lak‧ka

Noun

[edit]
