It is known that there is a high prevalence of certain anxiety disorders among schizophrenic patients, especially panic disorder and social phobia. However, the neural underpinnings of the comorbidity of such anxiety disorders and schizophrenia remain unclear. Our study aims to determine the neuroanatomical basis of the co-occurrence of schizophrenia with panic disorder and social phobia. Voxel-based morphometry was used in order to examine brain structure and to measure between-group differences, comparing magnetic resonance images of 20 anxious patients, 20 schizophrenic patients, 20 schizophrenic patients with comorbid anxiety, and 20 healthy control subjects. Compared to the schizophrenic patients, we observed smaller grey-matter volume (GMV) decreases in the dorsolateral prefrontal cortex and precentral gyrus in the schizophrenic-anxiety group. Objective: To investigate the prosodic aspects of therapists' empathic communication. Method: 70 audio-recorded sessions of cognitive psychotherapy and psychoanalysis were analysed using conversation analysis. Results: Two interactional trajectories where the therapists either validated the clients' emotions or challenged them were identified. The difference between these trajectories was not evident in the lexical composition of the therapists' formulations that initiated the trajectory. However, the prosodic features of the formulation already anticipated the direction of the trajectory. The formulations leading up to the validating trajectory were characterized by prosodic continuity and formulations leading up to the challenging trajectory by prosodic disjuncture. The choice between continuous and disjunctive prosody was a key resource for therapists in the construction of formulations as either validating or challenging. The present article emphasizes the relational aspects of psychotherapy communication by considering the prosodic features of the therapist's talk in relation to the prosody of the client.

Aims: This study aimed to explore the lived experiences of test anxiety among pre-service teachers, considering its broader implications for Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 4. It investigated the manifestations, determinants, and coping mechanisms associated with test anxiety in this population of future educators who undergo critical evaluations that shape their professional abilities.

We have demonstrated that the atypical antipsychotic drugs prevent cell death in PC12 cells induced by various cytotoxins and have protective effects on methamphetamine-induced neurotoxcity in rats. The present study was designed to examine the possible effects of chronic administration of quetiapine, an atypical antipsychotic drug, on the anxiety-like behavioural consequences of a neurotoxic regimen of dl-amphetamine. Rats were treated with quetiapine (10 mg/kg/day; i.p.) for 33 days. During days 15-19 of this period, the animals were given dl-amphetamine (20 mg/kg/day; s.c.) 1 h after the administration of quetiapine. The repeated administration of dl-amphetamine resulted in a decrease of tyrosine hydroxylase (TH) immunostaining in the caudate putamen, hyperthermia, and anxiety-like behavioural changes. The behavioural changes were indicated by a significant increase in the time spent in the light box in the light/dark box test, an increase in the ratios of ambulation distance inside the inner circle over the total ambulation distance and rearings inside the inner circle over the total rearings in the open field test, and an increase in the time spent in open arms in the elevated plus-maze test. Chronic administration of quetiapine significantly attenuated the dl-amphetamine-induced hyperthermia, and the anxiety-like behavioural changes in the light/dark box and in the open field tests. These results suggest that quetiapine can normalize the dl-amphetamine-induced anxiety-like behavioural changes, and might be helpful in the treatment for amphetamine-induced emotional changes.

The first study of 3,4-methylenedioxymethamphetamine (MDMA)-assisted therapy for the treatment of social anxiety in autistic adults commenced in the spring of 2014. The search for psychotherapeutic options for autistic individuals is imperative considering the lack of effective conventional treatments for mental health diagnoses that are common in this population. Serious Adverse Events (SAEs) involving the administration of MDMA in clinical trials have been rare and non-life threatening. To date, MDMA has been administered to over 1133 individuals for research purposes without the occurrence of unexpected drug-related SAEs that require expedited reporting per FDA regulations. Now that safety parameters for limited use of MDMA in clinical settings have been established, a case can be made to further develop MDMA-assisted therapeutic interventions that could support autistic adults in increasing social adaptability among the typically developing population. A double-blind, randomized, active placebo-controlled pilot study was conducted to examine safety and efficacy of lysergic acid diethylamide (LSD)-assisted psychotherapy in 12 patients with anxiety associated with lifethreatening diseases. Treatment included drug-free psychotherapy sessions supplemented by two LSD-assisted psychotherapy sessions 2 to 3 weeks apart. The participants received either 200 Kg of LSD (n = 8) or 20 Kg of LSD with an open-label crossover to 200 Kg of LSD after the initial blinded treatment was unmasked (n = 4). At the 2-month follow-up, positive trends were found via the State-Trait Anxiety Inventory (STAI) in reductions in trait anxiety ( p = 0.033) with an effect size of 1.1, and state anxiety was significantly reduced ( p = 0.021) with an effect size of 1.2, with no acute or chronic adverse effects persisting beyond 1 day after treatment or treatment-related serious adverse events. STAI reductions were sustained for 12 months. These results indicate that when administered safely in a methodologically rigorous medically supervised psychotherapeutic setting, LSD can reduce anxiety, suggesting that larger controlled studies are warranted.

Method: A true experimental study was performed on 120 staff nurses working in different medical units of a hospital in Saudi Arabia. The samples were randomly selected and allotted 60 in experimental and 60 in control group by randomization. Pretest posttest control group design was adopted, and a video assisted structured planned training program was provided for the interventional group and the mean difference was compared. Results: The knowledge of nurses on caring for patients with depression increased from preprogram to post program. (M =3.90 to 5.17 (t= 6.469, p<.001 and for suicide, from (M =2.13 to 2.53. The attitude towards depression increased from 24.60 to 27.03 and for suicide from (M =20.83, SD = 3.75) to (M =23.37, SD = 3.85); t =5.443, p <0.001. The mean post-test knowledge was higher in experimental group for all measures except for attitude on depression with a slight increase in control group. Conclusion: Our findings suggest PTP was effective in developing knowledge and attitude for nurses on managing depression and suicide in chronic medical areas.

Sažetak U radu je ispitana percepcija važnosti i zadovoljstvo s različitim aspektima posla kod visokoškolskih nastavnika iz privatne i javne ustanove. Primijenjene su dvije mjere zadovoljstva poslom, jedna temeljena na globalnom, druga na analitičkom pristupu. Na prvom upitniku nastavnici ukupno najvažnijim procjenjuju zanimljivost posla, s kojom su i najzadovoljniji. Najmanje važnim vide mogućnost odlučivanja, s čime su i najmanje zadovoljni. Na drugom upitniku, najveće zadovoljstvo iskazano je samim poslom, a najmanje plaćom. Background: Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs) are linked to the development of anxiety in adolescence. According to recent studies, the COVID-19 pandemic represents a novel ACE that is associated with anxiety among adolescents. This study investigates the relationship between ACEs, COVID-19, and anxiety in adolescents. Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted using a community sample of 248 boys and girls ages 12 to 15 years (mean = 13.50 years) from five high schools in Eastern Attica. A total of four questionnaires were used: (1) Demographic Questionnaire, (2) State-Trait Anxiety Inventory for Children-STAIC, (3) Adverse Childhood Experiences Scale, and (4) COVID-19 Impact Scale. Results: The results demonstrated a moderate association between the total number of ACEs and anxiety (trait and state) in adolescence (trait anxiety: ρ = 0.37, p < 0.001; state anxiety: ρ = 0.29, p < 0.001). Girls scored significantly higher than boys on both trait anxiety (U = 4353, p < 0.001; mean difference = 5.5) and state anxiety (U = 5822.5, p = 0.014; mean difference = 2). The number of ACEs was found to be significantly related to the impact of COVID-19 (β = 0.025, p < 0.001). Conclusions: This study highlights the significant link between ACEs and increased anxiety in adolescents, which is further exacerbated by the COVID-19 pandemic. The findings indicate that girls are more affected than boys. These results emphasize the need for targeted mental health interventions to enhance coping mechanisms, reduce stress, and address anxiety in adolescents, particularly during global crises like the pandemic. Developing such programs is essential for supporting the mental well-being of youth facing multiple stressors.

Background: Dissociation is understood as one of coping mechanism to deal with intense stressors. Individuals vary widely in their subjective response to a similar stressful event depending on number of factors including their family and social support system. The human hippocampal formation can be divided into a set of cytoarchitecturally and functionally distinct subregions, involved in different aspects of memory formation. Neuroanatomical disruptions within these subregions are associated with several debilitating brain disorders including Alzheimer&#39;s disease, major depression, schizophrenia, and bipolar disorder. Multi-center brain imaging consortia, such as the Enhancing Neuro Imaging Genetics through Meta-Analysis (ENIGMA) consortium, are interested in studying disease effects on these subregions, and in the genetic factors that affect them. Our Hungarian cross-sectional study highlights the crucial mediating role that adult attachment styles play in the relationship between early traumas and suicidal behaviour, shaping how individuals process and respond to traumatic experiences. Early traumas, such as abuse or neglect, often disrupt the development of secure attachment, leading to insecure styles in adulthood-such as anxious or avoidant attachment. These insecure attachment styles influence emotional regulation, interpersonal relationships, and coping mechanisms, thereby exacerbating feelings of isolation and despair. For instance, anxious attachment can intensify fear of abandonment and hypersensitivity to rejection, increasing emotional instability and suicidal ideation. Conversely, avoidant attachment may lead to emotional suppression and reluctance to seek support, amplifying feelings of hopelessness. Psychopathological symptoms resulting from early trauma-such as depression and PTSD-are often filtered through these attachment patterns, shaping how distress is experienced and managed. In our research, we analysed the role of adult attachment styles and early traumas in suicidal behaviour. We also examined the mediating effect of attachment style in the relationship between early traumas and suicidal behaviour. A total of 357 subjects between the ages of 18 and 85 (mean = 37.02, SD = 12.86) were included in the analysis; 33.6% were male and 66.4% female. The sample consisted of 146 individuals with a history of suicide, 154 clinical participants without a history of suicide, and 57 from a non-clinical population. The adult attachment scale (AAS) and the childhood trauma questionnaire (CTQ) were used as assessment tools. To model the relationships between variables, logistic regression, generalized linear models, and mediation analyses were conducted. All models were adjusted for basic demographic variables. Our results showed that the severity of emotional abuse (adjusted OR 1.064, p = 0.004), emotional neglect (adjusted OR 1.064, p = 0.007), and overall traumatization measured by the CTQ (adjusted OR 1.021, p = 0.006) significantly predicted a higher risk of suicidal behaviour. In contrast, higher levels of secure attachment style predicted a lower risk of suicide attempt (adjusted OR-0.091, p = 0.004). Additionally, secure attachment style significantly mediated part of the total effect of early traumatization severity on suicidal behaviour (indirect effect = 0.0032, p < 0.05; Pm = 16.5%). We also examined the relationship between early traumas and attachment style and found multiple significant associations. For avoidant attachment, significant associations were observed with the total traumatization score (B = 0.086, p < 0.001) and specific adversities, including emotional abuse, emotional neglect, and physical neglect (B = 0.244-0.319, all p < 0.001). Anxious-ambivalent attachment was associated with the total CTQ score (B = 0.088, p < 0.001), as well as emotional abuse (B = 0.298, p < 0.001), emotional neglect (B = 0.254, p < 0.001), physical abuse (B = 0.248, p < 0.001), and physical neglect (B = 0.261, p = 0.010). A lower level of secure attachment was linked to the overall traumatization score (B =-0.039, p = 0.004), as well as emotional abuse, emotional neglect, and sexual abuse (B =-0.101 to-0.163, all p < 0.05). By mediating the relationship between trauma and suicidal behaviour, adult attachment styles can either perpetuate maladaptive coping strategies or hinder recovery. Understanding this mediating role is crucial for developing interventions that address attachment insecurities while promoting resilience and emotional healing. Therapeutic approaches aimed at fostering secure attachment patterns can help mitigate the effects of early trauma and reduce the risk of suicidal behaviour. These findings underscore the importance of incorporating attachment-focused strategies into trauma-informed care.

The unified protocol for the transdiagnostic treatment of emotional disorders is a promising treatment approach that could be applicable to a broad range of mental disorders, including depressive, anxiety, trauma-related, and obsessive-compulsive disorders. However, no randomized controlled trial has been conducted to verify the efficacy of the unified protocol on the heterogeneous clinical population with depressive and anxiety disorders. The trial was designed as a single-center, assessor-blinded, randomized, 20-week, parallel-group superiority study in order to compare the efficacy of the combination of unified protocol and treatment-as-usual versus waiting-list with treatment-as-usual for patients with depressive and/or anxiety disorders. Background-Assessment of suicide plans is standard in acute psychiatric care, but there is a limited evidence base to guide this routine clinical practice. The purpose of this study was to investigate clinical correlates of suicide planning in depressed patients. Methods-151 patients with major depressive disorder and a lifetime history of suicide attempt were studied. Subjects received a comprehensive evaluation including structured diagnostic interview for Axis I and II disorders, current symptoms, impulsivity, and systematic assessment of suicide planning prior to the most recent suicide attempt. Results-Seriousness of suicide attempt planning correlated with lethality of suicidal acts. Comorbid anxiety disorder and anxiety correlated with less suicide planning. Specifically, this negative correlation was with comorbid panic disorder. Planning did not correlate with severity of depression or aggressive/impulsive traits. Limitations-Cross-sectional design, retrospective recall of suicide planning data, limited applicability to completed suicide or other psychiatric disorders. Conclusions-In major depression, comorbid panic disorder appears protective against more carefully planned, higher lethality suicide attempts. Surprisingly, severity of depression and aggressive impulsive traits do not predict planning or lethality of suicide attempts. We have previously reported that anxiety severity protects against the probability of a suicide attempt and now extend that observation to show there is protection against lethality of a suicide attempt. Treatment of anxiety without directly treating major depression may place patients at greater risk of suicidal behavior.

Methods -A review was carried out on reports drawn from MEDLINE and PSYCHLIT (January 1995-June 2006) and identified from their list of references. The selection criteria were met by 55 articles. Results -Sample sizes in the reviewed studies varied widely and consisted mainly of working age men. Depression and anxiety were mostly evaluated with commonly used mood scales; only a few studies provided a psychiatric diagnosis. Prevalence figures fluctuated considerably for both depression (7-63%) and anxiety (11-70%). The effect of the continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) on mood was inconsistent. Conclusions -Variations in the prevalence of depression and anxiety are affected by patient characteristics, mood assessment methods, and overlap between mood alterations and OSAS-related symptoms. CPAP might improve mood alterations but more long-term follow-up studies are needed to verify the effectiveness.

Method-Participants were 19 adolescents (12 to 17 years) who completed a manual-based cognitive-behavioural treatment. Primary outcomes (school attendance; school-related fear; anxiety) and secondary outcomes (depression; internalizing problems) were assessed at posttreatment and 2-month follow-up. Results-Post-treatment increases in school attendance and decreases in fear about attending school the next day were found to be mediated by self-efficacy. Mediating effects were not observed at 2-month follow-up. Conclusions-These findings provide partial support for the role of self-efficacy in mediating the outcome of CBT for school refusal. They contribute to a small body of literature suggesting that cognitive change enhances CBT outcomes for young people with internalizing problems. Regarding methodology, the product of coefficient test appears to be a valuable way to study mediation in outcome studies involving small samples.

Multiple sclerosis (MS) can become a significant challenge due to its high comorbidity with mood and anxiety disorders. Despite extensive research on psychological symptoms in MS, the role of transdiagnostic protective factors, demographic variables, and the interplay between these factors have received less attention. This study aimed to investigate the interaction between psychological symptoms, transdiagnostic factors, and demographic variables in patients with MS. Methods: Data were collected and analyzed from 154 patients with MS. The participants completed the demographic data form, Yale-Brown obsessive-compulsive scale, Beck depression inventory-II (BDI-II), generalized anxiety disorder-7 scale, the difficulties in emotion regulation scale, and Connor-Davidson resilience scale (CDRS). Path analyses were performed using the lavaan package in R software. Results: The findings indicate that a higher age at MS onset and longer disease duration are directly associated with increased depression and obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) symptoms, as well as patients' perception of disability (PDS). Additionally, resilience negatively and difficulties in emotion regulation positively contributed to more severe symptoms of depression OCD and anxiety. Through the mediating role of depression, resilience and difficulties in emotion regulation are indirectly associated with a milder and more severe PDS, respectively. Conclusion: The results highlight the importance of demographic characteristics, particularly the role of disease duration in the development of depression, as well as the impact of depression on patients' PDS. Moreover, the protective role of resilience and the detrimental role of difficulties in emotion regulation underscores the need for targeted psychological interventions in MS rehabilitation.

Health anxiety, commonly called hypochondriasis but having a broader definition, has been treated by therapists expert in cognitive behaviour therapy (CBT) with some specific benefit in some patients. Those in hospital care have been less often investigated. Following a pilot trial suggesting efficacy we carried out a randomized study in hospital medical clinics. We undertook a multicenter, randomised trial on health anxious patients attending outpatient clinics in secondary care. A computer-generated random scheme was used to allocate eligible medical patients to an active treatment group of 5-10 sessions of adapted CBT (CBT-HA) delivered by hospital-based therapists or to standard care in the clinics. The primary outcome was change in health anxiety symptoms measured by the Health Anxiety Inventory at one-year and the main secondary hypothesis was equivalence of total health and social care costs over two-years, with an equivalence margin of £150. Analysis was by intention to treat. The study is registered as ISRCTN14565822. Of 28,991 patients screened, 219 were randomly assigned to CBT-HA and 225 to a standard care arm. 205 and 212, respectively, were included in the analyses of the primary endpoints. At one-year, improvement in health anxiety in CBT-HA patients was 2.98 points greater than in the standard care group (95% confidence interval [CI], 1.64 to 4.33, P<0.001). Twice as many patients receiving CBT achieved normal levels of health anxiety compared to the control group (13.9% vs 7.3%). OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the existing literature on the association between parents’ depression and anxiety and their influence on their children’s weight during childhood, identifying possible mechanisms involved in this association. METHODS: A systematic search of the literature was conducted in the PubMed, PsycINFO and SciELO databases, using the following descriptors: (maternal OR mother* OR parent* OR paternal OR father) AND (“common mental disorder” OR “mental health” OR “mental disorder” OR “depressive disorder” OR depress* OR anxiety OR “anxiety disorder”) AND (child* OR pediatric OR offspring) AND (overweight OR obes* OR “body mass index” OR BMI). A total of 1,187 articles were found after peer selection. RESULTS: In total, 16 articles that met the inclusion criteria were selected for the review. Background: Research supports the observation that "smokers drink and drinkers smoke." In this study, we aim to evaluate the relationship between nicotine dependence and the severity of anxiety and depression among alcohol dependent inpatients. Method: The study comprised 125 inpatients diagnosed as having alcohol dependence. They were given the SCID-I, AUDIT, Fagerstrom Test for Nicotine Dependence,Hamilton Rating Scale for Depression, and Hamilton Anxiety Rating Scale. Results: Our findings showed that the mean scores of the severity of anxiety and depression were high in alcohol dependent inpatients with nicotine dependence, but there was no significant difference between the nicotine dependent and nondependent groups in the severity of anxiety and depression. Conclusion: Comparative studies between alcohol dependent patients who smoke and different smoking or nonsmoking groups with anxiety or depression may provide valuable information. Further studies are needed to examine the correlations between these groups.

Results: This study showed that the personality traits of Extraversion (p =0.0495) and Conscientiousness (p=<0.0001) have an inverse relationship with severity of alcohol dependence and were statistically signicant. The association between remaining personality traits and severity of alcohol dependence were not statistically signicant. The personality trait of Neuroticism was found to be directly associated to the severity of Alcohol dependence while Extraversion, Openness, Agreeablenes and Conscientiousness were inversely associated with severity of Alcohol Dependence.

Abstract
This study investigates the biological, psychological, and environmental risk factors contributing to depression and anxiety among adolescents in England. Employing a cross-sectional quantitative design, data were gathered through an online structured questionnaire completed by 178 participants aged 13–18. The study aimed to examine the prevalence and demographic distribution of emotional disorders, assess the role of biological and psychological vulnerabilities, and evaluate environmental influences such as family dynamics, peer relationships, and school pressure. Regression analysis revealed that family and school environment significantly predicted mental health symptoms, while lifestyle behaviours—including screen time, physical activity, and sleep—did not show statistically significant associations. These findings challenge conventional assumptions and suggest that relational and emotional contexts may be more impactful than behavioural habits in adolescent mental health outcomes.
The results further indicated that psychological factors, particularly academic pressure and cognitive difficulties such as concentration issues, were prevalent across the sample. Although socio-economic variation was present, no significant differences were observed in perceived support or lifestyle behaviours across income levels. This highlights the nuanced interplay of social and emotional support in shaping mental well-being, independent of economic status. The study underscores the importance of school- and family-based interventions and calls for inclusive, trauma-informed research approaches that consider underexplored factors like identity, stigma, and parental mental health. Overall, this research contributes valuable insights for mental health practitioners, educators, and policymakers seeking to develop targeted strategies that address the complex landscape of adolescent depression and anxiety in the UK context.

Results: In our study MS patients did not differ from controls in the five personality domains. Results show a significant relationship between mood/anxiety symptoms and personality traits in MS patients. Conclusion: MS patients with higher anxiety and depression exhibited higher neuroticism and less extroversion, agreeableness, and conscientiousness than MS patients with lower anxiety and depression scores and normal controls.

The psychometric properties of the Depression Anxiety Stress Scales (DASS) were evaluated in two studies using large clinical samples (N = 437 and N = 241). In Study 1, the three scales comprising the DASS were shown to have excellent internal consistency and temporal stability. An exploratory factor analysis (principal components extraction with varimax rotation) yielded a solution that was highly consistent with the factor structure previously found in nonclinical samples. Between-groups comparisons indicated that the DASS distinguished various anxiety and mood disorder groups in the predicted direction. In Study 2, the conceptual and empirical latent structure of the DASS was upheld by findings from confirmatory factor analysis. Correlations between the DASS and other questionnaire and clinical rating measures of anxiety, depression, and negative affect demonstrated the convergent and discriminant validity of the scales. In addition to supporting the psychometric properties of the DASS in clinical anxiety and mood disorders samples, the results are discussed in the context of current conceptualizations of the distinctive and overlapping features of anxiety and depression.

Background: Anxiety scales may help primary care physicians to detect specific anxiety disorders among the many emotionally distressed patients presenting in primary care. The anxiety scale of the Four-Dimensional Symptom Questionnaire (4DSQ) consists of an admixture of symptoms of specific anxiety disorders. The research questions were: (1) Is the anxiety scale unidimensional or multidimensional? (2) To what extent does the anxiety scale detect specific DSM-IV anxiety disorders? (3) Which cut-off points are suitable to rule out or to rule in (which) anxiety disorders? Methods: We analyzed 5 primary care datasets with standardized psychiatric diagnoses and 4DSQ scores. Unidimensionality was assessed through confirmatory factor analysis (CFA). We examined mean scores and anxiety score distributions per disorder. Receiver operating characteristic (ROC) analysis was used to determine optimal cut-off points. Results: Total n was 969. CFA supported unidimensionality. The anxiety scale performed slightly better in detecting patients with panic disorder, agoraphobia, social phobia, obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD) and post traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) than patients with generalized anxiety disorder (GAD) and specific phobia. ROC-analysis suggested that ≥4 was the optimal cut-off point to rule out and ≥10 the cut-off point to rule in anxiety disorders. The 4DSQ anxiety scale measures a common trait of pathological anxiety that is characteristic of anxiety disorders, in particular panic disorder, agoraphobia, social phobia, OCD and PTSD. The anxiety score detects the latter anxiety disorders to a slightly greater extent than GAD and specific phobia, without being able to distinguish between the different anxiety disorder types. The cut-off points ≥4 and ≥10 can be used to separate distressed patients in three groups with a relatively low, moderate and high probability of having one or more anxiety disorders.

The risk of posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) following trauma is heritable, but robust common variants have yet to be identified. In a multi-ethnic cohort including over 30,000 PTSD cases and 170,000 controls we conduct a genome-wide association study of PTSD. We demonstrate SNP-based heritability estimates of 5–20%, varying by sex. Three genome-wide significant loci are identified, 2 in European and 1 in African-ancestry analyses. Analyses stratified by sex implicate 3 additional loci in men. Along with other novel genes and non-coding RNAs, a Parkinson’s disease gene involved in dopamine regulation, PARK2, is associated with PTSD. Finally, we demonstrate that polygenic risk for PTSD is significantly predictive of re-experiencing symptoms in the Million Veteran Program dataset, although specific loci did not replicate. Aims Despite the frequency that refugees suffer bereavement, there is a dearth of research into the prevalence and predictors of problematic grief reactions in refugees. To address this gap, this study reports a nationally representative population-based study of refugees to determine the prevalence of probable prolonged grief disorder (PGD) and its associated problems. Methods This study recruited participants from the Building a New Life in Australia (BNLA) prospective cohort study of refugees admitted to Australia between October 2013 and February 2014. The current data were collected in 2015–2016, and comprised 1767 adults, as well as 411 children of the adult respondents. Adult refugees were assessed for trauma history, post-migration difficulties, probable PGD, post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and mental illness. Objectives: There are a number of effective psychological interventions for anxiety disorders. Anecdotal and empirical evidence indicates that clients are often highly apprehensive about commencing therapy. However, to date, there have been no empirical studies of the content of individuals' fears about beginning a psychological treatment for anxiety problems. Here we describe the development and initial validation of the Treatment Ambivalence Questionnaire (TAQ), a 30-item self-report measure of concerns about commencing psychological treatment for anxiety. Methods: Participants were a large group of individuals with a principal diagnosis of an anxiety disorder who were referred to a specialty anxiety disorders clinic. Participants completed the TAQ as well as several general self-report instruments before commencing treatment. Results: The TAQ exhibited good internal consistency and, based on exploratory factor analyses, the items yielded three subscales: (a) fears of the personal consequences of engaging in treatment (e.g., personality change), (b) fears of negative or adverse reactions to treatment (e.g., not getting better), and (c) concerns about the inconvenience of engaging in treatment (e.g., treatment will be time-consuming). Confirmatory factor analysis supported this factor structure. Scores on the TAQ did not simply represent general symptom severity or distress. Preliminary data on the relation of TAQ scores to treatment outcome suggested either no relationship or a small relationship. Conclusion: The TAQ may be a useful means of normalizing treatment fears, identifying and addressing specific fears, and identifying people who may benefit from treatment readiness interventions.

Studies show that patients with substance use disorders (SUD) and posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) are at high risk for engaging in risky behaviors. However, these studies do not speak to the context in which these behaviors are more likely to occur. This study examined whether SUD patients with current PTSD, compared to those without a history of PTSD, are more likely to exhibit risk-taking on a laboratory-based risk-taking task, the Iowa Gambling Task (IGT), following exposure to a personalized trauma script versus a neutral script. The sample consisted of 122 trauma-exposed SUD patients with and without PTSD. Participants were administered a series of diagnostic interviews and personalized trauma scripts were created. On separate days, participants were exposed to a neutral or trauma script, followed by the IGT. Contrary to expectations, PTSD-SUD patients exhibited significantly greater risk-taking after the neutral (vs. trauma) script than those without PTSD. Moreover, whereas SUD patients without PTSD evidenced stability in IGT performance across scripts, those with PTSD exhibited significantly lower risk-taking on the IGT following the trauma (vs. neutral) script. Results provide support for the context dependent nature of risk-taking in PTSD-SUD patients and suggest they may become more risk averse in the context of trauma-related distress.

Investigating the clinical manifestations of this disorder, the triggers of exacerbations, and factors that alleviate the condition is crucial for developing effective approaches to managing, curating, and treating such patients.

The objectives of this study were to estimate the prevalence of a history of slapping or spanking in a general population sample and to assess the relation between such a history and the lifetime prevalence of psychiatric disorders. In this general population survey, a probability sample of 9953 residents of Ontario aged 15 years and older who participated in the Ontario Health Supplement was used to examine the prevalence of a history of slapping and spanking. Objective-There are numerous theories of panic disorder, each proposing a unique pathway of change leading to treatment success. However, little is known about whether improvements in proposed mediators are indeed associated with treatment outcomes and whether these mediators are specific to particular treatment modalities. Our purpose in this study was to analyze pathways of change in theoretically distinct interventions using longitudinal, moderated mediation analyses. Method-Forty-one patients with panic disorder and agoraphobia were randomly assigned to receive 4 weeks of training aimed at altering either respiration (capnometry-assisted respiratory training) or panic-related cognitions (cognitive training). Changes in respiration (PCO 2 , respiration rate), symptom appraisal, and a modality-nonspecific mediator (perceived control) were considered as possible mediators. Results-The reductions in panic symptom severity and panic-related cognitions and the improvements in perceived control were significant and comparable in both treatment groups. Capnometry-assisted respiratory training, but not cognitive training, led to corrections from initially hypocapnic to normocapnic levels. Moderated mediation and temporal analyses suggested that in capnometry-assisted respiratory training, PCO 2 unidirectionally mediated and preceded changes in symptom appraisal and perceived control and was unidirectionally associated with changes in panic symptom severity. In cognitive training, reductions in symptom appraisal were bidirectionally associated with perceived control and panic symptom severity. In addition, perceived control was bidirectionally related to panic symptom severity in both treatment conditions. The findings suggest that reductions in panic symptom severity can be achieved through different pathways, consistent with the underlying models.

This article presents preliminary data on the Combat Experience Log (CEL) -a web-based prospective data collection system for the in theater assessment of war zone stressors and stress reactions. 177 U.S. Army soldiers deployed to Iraq took part in the study. The overall response rate was 90.1% and the majority of CEL responders perceived the CEL system to be quite easy and convenient to use, and relevant to their war-zone experiences. Preliminary data on stress reactions, CEL utilization and soldier satisfaction are encouraging and suggest that the CEL assessment system offers a potentially useful assessment tool for enhancing our understanding of war-zone stress experiences and their contribution to PTSD and other combat stress disorders.

This study examined the degree to which the response theory of depression generalized to anxious mood. The effects of active and passive rumination and distraction were evaluated in undergraduate students who underwent anxious mood induction. Experimental procedures were comparable to those used by Nolen-Hceksema and colleagues for depressed mood. Anxious, sad, and angry moods were elevated by tbe anxiety induction procedure. As hypothesized, visual analog scales and afTective checkbsts for anxiety and negative mood overall were lessened more by distraction than ~mination. The results suggest that rumination prolongs negative affect. Active versus passive conditions did not influence mood.
