Grab a bucket of beads because I have so many fun Perler Bead crafts that you will want to create all of them!
I’m going to be honest. I have always thought perler beads were for little kids. BUT now-NOW the tables have turned! I can’t decide what awesome project I want to DIY first! Keychains, iphone cover, hair stuff, earrings! I want to make them all! Time to buy some beads in bulk!
FYI- someone mentioned in my Instagram comments that these are called HAMA beads in the UK!
Perler bead supplies
- Perler bead bucket I love this set- it’s a great variety of colors!
- Stripes and pearl set– another darling set. We use the black and white stripes quite often
- Boards– even though these crafts aren’t a set shape, you still need a large pegboard to work on!
- Glow in the Dark perler beads– not necessary- but fun nonetheless!
- Tweezers
- Bead pen (I haven’t tried it-but it looks promising!)
If you are doing a specific project, you can also buy bags of perler beads in one specific color!
How to use Perler beads
1) After you have created your design- usually on a pegboard, place it on a heat-safe surface.
2) Set a household iron to the medium setting. Place ironing paper over the pegboard. (most kits have a piece of it inside them. But you can also use a piece of parchment paper.) In a circular motion, begin to iron the project. Do not press down with the iron. When ironed properly, the beads will still have an open center. Let the design cool.
3) Remove the paper and bead design from the pegboard. Flip the design over to expose the non-fused side and repeat step two. Let cool completely. The pegboard and ironing paper are reusable.
NOTE: Beads need heat for about 10-20 seconds per side to fuse evenly. DO NOT OVER-IRON the beads as it will make the centers of the beads close and can make the assembly harder.
Some of these crafts use Perler beads without melting them!
